One of the objects of my invention is to strengthen the hatch cover and prolong its life.
Another object of my invention is to provide a hinge which will eliminate hinge blocks, and the like, present an ordinary refrigerator car roofs which commonly furnish an obstruction to l0 the proper sweeping of the roof after re-icing.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists of certain new and useful improvements and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim.
Referring now to the drawing showing a preferred embodiment of my invention:
Figure 1 is a sectional View of the hatch tongue of the hinge.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the tongue shown in section on Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional View of the roof tongue of the hinge.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the tongue shown in Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a plan View of a hatch cover fitted with two of the complete hinges.
Figure 6 is a sectional View showing the hatch cover in position equipped with the hinges, showing in dotted lines the open position of the hatch.
The tongue 1 adapted to be fastened to the hatch cover by screws, or other means, passing Chicago, Ill., a Corpora- 1930. Serial No. 491,100
through a plurality of drilled holes as 2, is provided with a loop at one end as 3 to accommodate a rivet as 4, which passes through a similar loop 5 in the tongue 6, which is also provided with a plurality of drilled holes as 7 to accommodate screws or other means to fasten the tongue to the roof of the car.
1t is noted that tongue 6 is bent at 8 in order to t snugly against the crown of the hatch rim 9, bending back at 10, in order to present a straight edge l1, to the hatch cover 12. The hatch cover in open position may rest against the block as 13, if desired.
I claim:
A hinge for a refrigerator car hatch cover and which said cover when closed overlaps the crown of the hatch, .said hinge comprising two leaves appropriately hinged, one of said leaves being flat and adapted for attachment to the top of the hatch cover and of suicient length to extend substantially across the full width thereof, the pintle end of said flat leaf being adapted for projecting beyond one side edge of the hatch cover, the companion leaf being shaped so as to provide a portion that extends downwardly from the pintle, thence toward the hatch opening, thence downwardly, and thence for a substantial distance in a direction away from the hatch opening whereby said last mentioned leaf is adapted to follow the contours in cross section of the hatch construction.
