7 Claims. (01. s ]115) a This invention relates generally to gas lighter constructions and refers more particularly to those of the push button valve type describedfor use in connection with the gas burners of stoves and ranges having concealedmanifolds.
One of the essential objects of the invention is to provide a lighter of the type mentioned wherein the body of the valve is formed of two sections which may be assembled after one of said sections is secured to the concealed manifold.
Another object is to provide a connection between the sections referred to that will enable the push button of the valve while assembled with the second section to be inserted through the front wall of the stove, and the second section to be subsequently connected to the first section.
Another object is to provide a construction which will enable the connection aforesaidzto be made easily and quickly after the manifold has been secured'in place without dismantling either the lighter or stove and without any of the light.- er parts striking or swinging against any of the parts of the stove. i
A further object is to provide a lighter that is simple and neat in design, that can be manufactured at a comparatively low cost, thatis sturdy and compact in construction and that is safe and reliable. r
Other objects, advantages and novel details of construction of this invention will be made more apparent as this description proceeds, especially when considered in connection with the accom-x panyi-ng drawings, wherein:

Figure 2 is a vertical'sectional perspective view through the front wall of the stove;
Figure 3 is a plan View of the lighter valve unit;
Figures 4, 5 and 6 are vertical sectional views taken on the lines 44, 55 and 6- -6 of Figure 3;
Figure 7 is a detail perspective view of the lower section of the valve body.
Referring now to the drawings, A is a gas stove v,of conventional design having a burner compartment 1 provided with a front wall 2 and a top grating 3. 4 are burners within the compartment; 5 is a gas manifold concealed in the compartment in rear of the front wall 2, and 6 are .mixing tubes extending from the manifold 5 to 'ing one end of the pipe 8.

Preferably the'body 9 has two sections 15 and 16 having frustro-conical portions 1'? and 13 respectively fitting snugly one within the other and having flat attaching flanges 19 and 20 respectively secured together by screws 21; [The lower section 15 has an externally threaded nipple 22 projecting iromits lower face at approximately the center thereof for. engagement with thegas manifold 5, while the upper section 16 has an interiorly threaded socket 23 in one side thereof for receiv- Suitable connecting passages 24, 25, .26, 27, 28 and 29 respectively and sockets 30 and 31 respectively are provided in the upper section 16 to conduct gas from the nipple 22 to the socket 30., As shown, the passage 24 is in vertical alignmentwith the passage 32 in the nipple 22 when the sections 15 and 16 are togetherrand extends above the socket 31 to a point just below the socket 30. The passage 25 connects the socket 31 with the passage 26 and the passage 2'7 connects the'passage 26 with the socket 30. The passage26 extends above the passage 27and receives the closure .13, while the socket 31 is preferably in line with the passage 25 so as to permit insertion. or removal of the valve 10 and receives the plug 14. The passages ,28 and 29 are restricted andcooperate with the socket 40 to form a by-pass between the through the rear wall 44 of the passage 25 into in the socket 45 and is held firmly in place by a coil spring 48 sleeved on the stem between the packing and push button.
The adjusting screw 12 threadedly engages the walls of the socket 40 and has a pointed end 50 for controlling the flow of gas through the passage 28 from the passage 24.
Thus with the construction as described, the lower section 15 alone may be readily secured to the manifold 5, and the upper section 16 with the valve 10, push button 11 and associated parts all assembled'may be easily and quickly securedto or detached from the lower section 15 without interference with the front wall 2 by merely manipulating the screws 21 as desired.
1 After the parts are installed adjustmentof the screw 12 will permit the proper flow of gas from the manifold 5 to the pipe 8, and unseating of the valve 10 by inward manipulation of the push button 11 will permit gas to flow past the seat 42 to the pipe 8.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
What I claim as my invention is:
'1. The combination with a gas stove having an upright Wall, a gas manifold in rear of said wall, a gas burner in rear of and connected to said manifold, of a gas lighter for said burner includ ing a firing head adjacent the-burner, a sectional valve unit in rear of said wall, one section of said unit having a nipple portion connected to and adapted to receive gas from the manifold, the second section of said valve unit being connected to and adapted to receive gas from the first mentioned section, a gas supply tube for the firing head projecting from one end of the second sec-- tion, a valve element in said second section for controlling the passage of gas from the first section to said tube, and actuating means for said valve element including an operating member projecting from the other end of the second section through and accessible in front of an open in the upright Wall aforesaid.
2. The-combination with a gas stove having an upright wall, and a gas manifoldin rear of said wall, of a gas lighter for said burner in cluding two castingssecured together and having communicating gas passages, one of said castings having a nipple connected to and adapted to receive gas from said manifold, a gas supply tube for afiring head connected to the second casting and adapted to receive gas from the passage therein, a valve in the second casting for corn trolling the flow of gas to the tube, and actuating means for the valve including a'inernber projecting from the second casting through an opening in the upright wallaforesaid so as to be accessible from in front of said wall.
A gas lighter structure of the self-contained portable unit type'including a valve unit comprising two castings detachably secured together and having communicating one of said castings having a nipple attachable to a gas manifold of a stove, a supply tube for a firing head connected to the second casting and adapted to receive gas from the passage therein, a valve in the second casting for controlling the flow of gas to the tube, and actuating means for the valve including a memberprojecting later- I and adapted to receive gas from the passage therein, a valve for controlling the flow of gas from the nipple to the tube, and actuating means for the valve including an operating member projecting laterally from the second section.
5. A gas lighter including a sectional valve unit,
- a firing head, a tube terminally connected to the firing head and to one section of the valve unit, a valve in the section just mentioned for controlling the passage of gas to the firing head, actuating means for the valve including a push button projecting from said section for insertion through an opening in a Wall of a stove, the other section of said unit having a nipple portion attachable to a concealed manifold of the stove and having means for supporting and for conducting gas from the to the section aforesaid.
6.- A gas lighter including a valve unit having upper and lower sections detachably secured together, the lower section having a nipple portion attachable to a manifold of a stove and having {a seat for the upper section, and the upper section having a passage therein adapted to receivelgas from the lower section, a firing head,'agas supply tube for the firing head projecting laterally from the upper section and adapted to receive gas from said passage, a valve in the upper section controlling the flow of gas through said passage to said tube, and actuating means for the valve including a push button projecting laterally from the upper section and insertable throu h an opening in a wall of the stove. A gas lighter structure including a valve unit having upper and lower sections, the lower section having a nipple portion attachable to and adapted to receive gas from manifold of a stove, the upper section be connected to and adapted to receive gas from. ,lower sec on, a gas supply tube fora lighter -ng head ing laterally from and adapted to receive s from the upper section, a valve for controlling the passage of gas from the nipple to tube, and actu ating means for the valve including a push button projecting laterally from the upper section.
