Patented Aug. 8, 1933 UNITED STATES ArEN'r OFFICE are greater simplicity of construction and effec tiveness in use than heretofore.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, Fig. 1 is a plan of my invention, the clamp thereof being indicated in open position by the broken lines; Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal vertical section of my invention, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
My invention employs a base A and a superimposed cover B, said cover being clamped to the base by the means and in the manner as will be described for the purpose of holding the ends of what I have chosen to term a sheet of abrasive material C, while the latter is wrapped snugly over the lower surface of thebase. The 30 base resembles a rectangular oblong block made of wood or any other suitable material having a rounded side and an opposite beveled side 11, the latter producing a sharp angle along its toe portion. This rounded side and 35 beveled face enable one using the device to sand or polish corners or convex surfaces more eifectively, when the sheet of abrasive C is wrapped around the lower face of the base and its ends turned upwardly over said opposite sides and The cover element B, made out of wood or any other suitable material, resembles a rectangular oblong block of nearly the same dimentions as the base and has a pair of concave sides upper ends of each of these clamp engaging elements is provided with'a pair. of depending stops 13 and 14 between which is an upwardly recessed shoulder 15 for receiving and holding the 9 for the hand of the user to grip without sliptogether with the cover B and limit lateral play ends of a resilient clamp F to prevent said clamp from turning substantially in a horizontal plane about a pivot bolt 16 upon which the clamp F is swiveled. The pivot bolt is fastened downwardly through the central portionof cover element B and carries an encompassing spiral spring 1"! whose tendency is to urge the clamp F upwardly and. hold it with its ends engaging shoulder 15 between the stops 13 and 14 of the two clamp engaging elements. The stop 14 of 6 each pair depends a greater distance than companion stop 13 so as to produce a back stop when the clamp is turned in the direction of the arrows shown in Fig. 1 and from disengaging broken line position. This facilitates setting the clamp in locked position with the base and cover elements in sheet holding position.' To release the clamp the ends of the latter are disengaged from the clamp engaging elements by depressing against the tension of spring 17 and turning the clamp against the direction of the arrows shown in Fig. 1 and then releasing the clamp. The cover is then free to be lifted off of the base of the device for the purpose of removing the sheet of abrasive material 16 and replacing same by a new sheet. It will be noted that the stops 14 are arranged on opposite sides of the pivot to provide abutments for both ends of the clamp simultaneously when the clamp is turnedinto engagement with the clamp engagg5 ing elements. The lower surface of the base is covered by a sheet of felt, rubber or other resilient material 16 which is cemented or otherwise fastened to the base and acts as a cushion for the abrasive material for more efiectively apply ingthe device in use.
In use a sheet of any suitable abrasive material to be used for grinding, polishing, rubbing or any other purpose is wrapped around the resilient lower face of the base and its ends turned up and inwardly while being drawn taut. Next the cover is secured down by adjusting the clamp F in engagement with the clamp engaging elements by turning the clamp while depressed and releasing it, the limit of the turning movement being defined by the stops 14. In this condition said clamp F, clamp engaging elements D and E and stops 13 and 14 cooperate of said cover on said base.
It will be understood that the drawing and description are to be considered as illustrative and not restrictive in l the claims appended hereto, as changes can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the said claims.
. when and if desired.
It will be understood that I do not confine this invention to sand paper. Anything which is a sheet of material which can be used more handily in a holder of this design may be used It will further understood that no restrictions are placed on the material of which the several members are made, and still further understood that the drawing and description are to be considered as illustrative and not restrictive to the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1.. A holder, comprising in combination, a base, clamp engaging elements secured to and projecting upwardly on opposite side walls of said base having inturned shoulders upon their upper ends and stops near the extremities of said shoulders, a cover over the base forming a handle and adapted to nest closely between said clamp engaging elements, a strip of abrasive wrapped around the lower surface of said base having ends turned upwardly over sides of said base and inwardly between said base and cover to be clamped therebetween, and a resilient clamp consisting of an arm swiveled between its ends upon said cover having ends adapted to releasably engage said shoulders between said stops under spring pressure to press said cover down and hold said abrasive upon said base, said clamp engaging elements and stops cooperating with said cover and clamp to limit lateral play of said cover on said base.
2. A holder, comprising, in combination, a base, shoulder elements on opposite sides of said base, each shoulder element having stops at its opposite ends, a cover over said base, abrasive wrapped around the lower surface of said base having ends turned upwardly and inwardly between said cover and base to be clamped therebetween, and a resilient clamp swiveled to turn horizontally on said cover andhaving ends adapted to lodge below said shoulders and between said stops when the clamp is turned while depressed and released to hold the cover, abrasive and base secured firmly together and the cover from horizontal movement.
