BLOTTING-PAD Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 28, 1911.
Application filed September 11, 1911. Serial No. 648,697.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, KARL OsKA'a FRITIOF Pn'rsnson, a citizen of Sweden, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blotting- Pads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to blotting pads and its object is to produce awdevice of this class that is light, efiicient and durable and that is cheap to manufacture.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in View the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be here inafter fully described in the following specification. pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of the specification and in which- Figure '1 is-a plan of the device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical section in elevation. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the device collapsed. Fig. 5 is a. detail showing the means of retaining thelever in an upright position.

l is aflat plate formed of asingle piece of resilient material that is normally held in removable engagement with a somewhat similar plate 2 whose ends are bent upward to form a roll in which the ends of the plate 1 are retained. The plate 1 forms the top and the plate 2 the bottom member of the device. The top plate may be provided with a plurality of perforations 3 which minimize its weight and it is further provided with a transverse slot 4 through which the operating lever 5 evtends to engage the inner surface of the bottom plate 2. The lever 5 comprises a handle portion which projects above the surface of the top plate and a body portion lying between the plates 1 and 2 and which is made integral with the handle and which merges thereinto,
through the medium of a curved portion 6 in such a manner that the handle and body portions are disposed in parallel planes.
The upper terminationof the body portion that abuts the plate 1 is of greater length than the slot 4 and forms a pair of shoulders 7 which support the top plate when the lever is in a vertical or upright posltlon. A olurality of lugs 8 are bent up out of the ottom plate 2 in such a main ner as to form an abutment for either side of the base of the lever as shown in Fig. 2 when the same is in an upright position. The blotter 9 when in position upon the pad 15 held against the outer surface of the bottom plate 2 and has its ends tucked in between the engagcd ends of the two plates.
VVhen the device is ready for use it is in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and when not in use it may be collapsed into the position shown in Fig. at by manually prying the plates away from each other until the base of the lever is withdrawn from engagementwith the lugs 8, the lever is then rotated upon the curved portion 6 as an axis until the handle lies flat on top of the plate 1 and the body lies upon the under surface of that plate when the tension of the two plates will draw them toward each other and they will occupy the position shown in Fig. 4. To put a new blotter upon the plate 2- the upper plate is slid out of engagement therewith and the old blotter removed and the ends of a new one of proper size tucked into the roll formed at either end of the lower plate.
What I claim is 1. In a blotting pad, a top plate provided with a transverse slot, :1. bottom plate removably secured to the said top plate, a lever secured in the slotted portion of the top plate for normal engagement with the bottom plate and means carried by the hottom plate for releasable engagement with normal engagement with the bottom plate and upturned lugs made integral with the bottom plate for engagement with the sald lever.
