This invention relates to brief cases, portfolios and other containers, and has for its general object and purpose to provide certain improvements in an article of this kind as shown and described in my pending application for patent Serial No. 524,251, filed March 21, 1931 which has since matured into Patent No. 1,861,974, granted June '7, 1932, whereby the case or container may be securely locked to prevent access to the contents thereof.

. It is a more particular object of the invention to provide a simple and easily operated means for connecting three parts or sections constituting one side of the case or container and locking the same against relative movement.

In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the container includes opposite side walls forming the article receiving pocket secured in fixed relation and one of said walls having a free edge extending obliquely along the open side of the pocket together with a main closure flap having a part insertable beneath said obliquely inclined edge of the pocket wall and into the pocket, and a second end flap to close the end of the pocket adapted to be folded into superimposed relation upon the main closure flap, and one of said closure flaps having means to be releasably engaged with means on the other closure flap and detachably locked to said pocket wall, whereby the relatively movable closure flaps are securely held and locked in their closed positions.

It is a further general object of the invention to provide locking means for the brief case or portfolio which is shown in my pending application 7 which is exceedingly simple in its construction, strong and durable, and efficient and reliable for the purpose in View.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved brief case, portfolio or other container, and in the form, construction and relative arrangement of the several parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and subsequently incorporated in the subjoined claims.

In the drawing, wherein I have disclosed one simple and practical embodiment of my invention, and in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,

Referring in detail to the drawing, the body of 6 the case or portfolio, is formed from a blank sheet of leather or other flexible material as in my pending application, said blank being suitably cut to form the pocket walls 5 and 6 respectively, the wall 6 being folded over upon one side of the wall 5 and secured to the latter at one end thereof by the line of stitching indicated at '7. The wall 6 is provided with the obliquely extending free edge 8 which extends diagonally across the wall 5 at the open side of the pocket. The body of the case also includes a triangular shaped section 9 foldable with respect to the body wall 5 along the line indicated at 10. To the inner side of this section 9, a flap 11 is secured along one edge thereof by the line of stitching indicated at 12, said stitching'extending in parallel relation with the free obliquely inclined edge 13 of the triangular shaped section 9 and in spaced relation therefrom. This edge portion of the section 9 thus provides a yieldable or resilient flap 1% which is adapted to extend beyond the inclined edge 8 of the pocket wall 6 and upon the outer surface thereof when the section 9 is folded over the open side of the pocket, and the flap 11 inserted upwardly into said pocket beneath the inclined edge 8 of the wall 6.

The wall 5 is provided at the open end of the pocket with a triangular shaped closure flap 15 foldable with respect to said wall along the line indicated at 16 and provided upon one of its free edges with a longitudinally extending relatively narrow locking tongue 17. Thus, it will be readily understood from reference to Fig.1 of the drawing, when this end flap 15 is folded inwardly into superimposed relation upon the main pocket closing flap 9,-the tongue 1'? is flexed and interlocked under the sealing flap 14 of the closure section 9.

For the purpose of securely locking the parts 9 and 15 in their folded closed positions with respect to the pocket wall 6, I provide upon one of said closure flaps, in this instance, the endfiap 15, a strap 18 securely attached at one of its ends to the inner face of said fiap and projecting from the other free edge thereof. The other extremity of said strap carries the male element 19 of a suitable locking device, the other part of the lock being suitably secured as shown at 20 to the outer side of the pocket wall 6 in spaced relation from its inclined edge 8. Upon the outer face of the triangular shaped sections 9 of the body of the case, a loop 21 is secured.

After the parts 9 and 15 have been moved to closed position and interlocked with each other as above explained, the locking element 19 and strap 18 are then inserted through the loop 21, and said locking element connected with the key actuated part of the lock 20 on the pocket wall Thus, the three parts 6, 9 and 15 of the case are connected and locked together to securely close the open side of the pocket and prevent access to the contents thereof.

From the above description considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and manner of operation of my present improvements will be fully and clearly understood. Itwill of' course, be understood that the illustrated locking means as above particularly described, is largely suggestive, and the form of the several parts and their arrangement might be variously modified while still accomplishing the fundamental purpose of the invention, via, to provide a single locking means whereby the three elements or parts of the case may be securely locked in connection with each other. Also, it will be evident that I have referred to a particular form and relative arrangement of the several parts of the case, that these features also might be variously modified and the case produced in other forms, shapes and sizes and provided with my improved locking.

I claim: 1

1. A container having a body wall constituting one side of an article receiving pocket, and a wall section extending partially over one side of ment from their closed positions, said means including a flexible strap attached to one of said flaps and releasably engaging a part on the other flap, and means for securing the free end of said strap to said pocket wall section beyond the free edge thereof.

2. A container having a body wall constituting one side of an article receiving pocket, and a wall section extending partially over one side of said body wall and secured in fixed relation thereto to constitute the other side wall or" the pocket, said wall section having a free edge extending diagonally across said body wall at the open side of the pocket, a main closure flap extending from one longitudinal edge of said body wall and foldable relative thereto to close the open side of the pocket, one free edge of said flap overlapping the free edge of said pocket wall section, and a second closure flap connected with an end edge of said body wall and foldable relative thereto into superimposed relation upon said niain closure flap and having means for interlocking connection with the free edge of the latter flap, and a single key operated locking means including 00- operating parts for connecting the closure flaps with each other and to said pocket wall section to hold said flaps against relative movement from their closed positions.
