The purpose of this invention to provide a holder for a cigarette having means for conveniently expelling the cigarette stub without liability of l aving fragments or i: crumbs of either the tobacco or the paper wrapper in the socket oil. the holder, the expeller or ejector being arranged so that ll'S presence does not impair the draft or suction, nor create opportunity for deposit of nicotine.
It consists in the elements and features of construction shown and described as indicated in the claims.
I In the drawing:
* Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying this invention,
Figure 2 is a bottom end plan VlGW.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section at the pane indicated by the line 83 on Figur on an enlarged scale.
Figure 4 is a side elevation looking 1n the direction of the arrow 4 on Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail: A is the body of the cigarette holder; B is the cigarette expeller: C the spring for retracting the expeller to cigarette-stopping position in the socket. The body A is made of any suitable non-metallic material which may bewood or indurated fiber, or molded plastic, and may be made in one piece, or in two pieces permanently united, as indicated at the parting plane 10, in Figures 1 and 3.
Of whatever material, and whether in one 7 H piece or in. two pieces, the body has at one end portion a socket 20, dimensioned as to diameter and depth. or length for accommodating and holding a cigarette of conventional diameter; and leading from the bottom or inner. end of the socket 20, there is a suction or draft duct 21, leading to theoppositeend which it will be understood is the end by which the holder will beheld between the lips of the smoker, and which is accordingly desirably provided with a slight exterior bead, indicated at F or a purpose which will appear from the further description, the holder is formed at least for a portion of its length in which the socket 20, extends, oblong, and approximately oval in cross section, with the socket ecthere is provided a spring 1932. Serial. No. 604,355.
centrically located, nearer one end of the longerdimension of the oval, leaving the wall at the other end thicker than it would otherwise be, for permitting a longitudinal bore 24, which at the inner end portion has 0pening into it from the outside of the body, a short slot 25.
The cigarette impeller B is a wire or metal strip bent into U-shape with the limbs 31 and 32 of the U-form spaced apart enough so that the limb ill of the U-form being inserted in the port 24, and the limb 32 being inserted into the socket, the two limbs will clasp the thin wall between the socket and the bore, and when the impeller limbs are thrust into the socket and bore, respectively, untilthe bend 80, of the U-form is stopped on the end of that thin wall, the end of the limb 32,is near the bottom of the socket; and that limb has at the end a laterally projecting tang or lug 33, which, as shown, is C-shaped so that it does not obstruct the draft duct, 21. At this fully inthrust position, the end portion of the limb 31, is exposed at the slot 25, and for ecuring the impeller in the body, so that it cannot be withdrawn except for a distance equal to the lengtl'i of the slot 25, there is permanently set intojthe limb 31, a stop pin 36, which protrudes into the slot, and may protrude slightly from the slot, and to serve not only as astop to limit the withdrawal of the impeller from the body, but also an operating knob which is easily engaged'by the finger of the smoker for operating the impeller to eject the cigarette stub.
Desire-bl ,and as shown in the drawing, C, for retractingthe impeller to the position first described, fully thrust into the socket and bore, at which position the C-shaped tank 33, serves as astop for the cigarette thrust into the socket for su'ioking. For cooperating with the spring G, in the manner stated, the limb 31, of the U-shaped impeller is enlarged at the end portion which is exposed at the slot, to form a shoulder as seen at 35, for stopping the inner end of the spring C, which is coiled about the'un enlarged part of the limb S1, and is stopped at the other end by 'sponding a little bushing 36, which is set firmly in the outer end of the bore 24, as seen in Figure 3. Most conveniently the enlargement men tioned is effected by a thin sleeve 37, fitted tightly on the limb 31, and, as shown, secured by i-dentation seen at 37; This sleeve 37 may serve also as an elongation of the limb 31, and the stop knob 36 is screwed into it, leaving the end of the stop knob protruding suitably through the slot to serve the purpose of stop and knob, as described.
As shown, and somewhat preferably, the limb 32, which clasps the thin wall, as described, is flattened, asseen in Figure 3, and the wall of the socket at that point is formed with a correshallow groove serving as a guideway .for the expeller both in the expelling and retractingmovement, which, however, is not the primary purpose of the flat form and curve, the primary purpose being to enextends in the socket and tirely avoid protrusion of the expeller limb into the cigarette.accommodating space of thesocket, I
The operation of the device for its purpose will be obvious from the construction without further description.
\Ve claim:
1. A cigarette holder comprising an integral body member having at one end a socket for receiving one end of the cigarette and having a relatively slender draft duct leading from said socket to the other end ofthe body,-and having in the wall of the socket at one side thereof a bore extending parallel with the socket and the draft duct, and occupying a small angle of the circumference of the socket, and a cigarette expeller consisting of a slender metal strip or wire .flexed in U-form' with the limbs narrowly spaced apart for accommodating and clasping between them the wall of the socket intervening between the socket and the bore, the expellcr limb which extends in the socket ,having at the inner end an offset lug for stopping an inserted cigarette and engaging it to expel it, the other limb being dimensioned for extending its entire length within the bore through substantially the entire length ofthe latter and adapted to be reciprocated therein, the holder body having an exterior slot opening into the bore atthe inner end portion of the latter beyond the socket and extending towardthe outer end a distance substantially equal to the depth of the socket, and "the second mentioned limb of the expeller being furnished'with an operating stud and stop for 'inanual operation of the expeller protruding out through said slot for movement of the expeller through the length of the slot and limiting such movement to said length.
2. The construction defined in claim 1, the expeller limb which is accommodated in the bore being enlarged in diameter at the lit)
