Be it known that I, DARE Sires, a citizen of the United States, residin at Bethel' Springs, in the county of Nfcll airy and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife Attachments for Revolvers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in knife attachments for revolvers, pistols and analogous firearms, and has for its principal object to provide a device which is of such a construction as to enable the use of either the revolver or knife independently.

Another important object of the invention is to provide a knife attachment of the above mentioned character, wherein the same is adapted to be supported in such a position upon the firearms as not to interfere with the use of the latter, means being further provided with the knife for preventing the accidental opening of the same.

A further object of the invention is to provide a knife attachment for a revolver which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable, and further well adapted for the purposes for which. it is designated.

Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a revolver of any preferred form which is provided with the usual barrel 2 and stock 3. Depending from the barrel 2 of the revolver l is the extension 4. This extension is provided with the longitudinally extending slot 5 which extends for substantially the full length of the extension and communicates with the bottom and forward end of the extension respectively in the manner as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawing. This slotted extension may be conveniently referred to as an open ended sheath for reception of a knife blade to be a hereinafter referred to. It is to be observed that the sheath gradually decreases in depth from its free outer end to its inner end and the bottom thereof is curved downwardly adjacent its point of juncture with the body of the revolver. This particular curvature of the bottom com s into play as will be set out later. v

Adapted to cooperate with the longitudinally extending slot 5 provided in the extension 4, is the knife blade 6. The latter has its tang portion .7 pivotally supported within the slot 5 on the transversely extending pins 8 adjacent the forward end of the extension in the manner as clearly shown in the drawing. Arranged in the upper portion of the lon itudinally extending slot 5 is the spring 9 and the same is supported therein at its inner end by means of atransversely extending pin 10. The spring which I use is simply a flexible metal strip, which is flat from end to end. When the inner end of the spring strip is inserted between the cross pin 10 and the curved bottom of the channeled sheath, a considerable portion of the length of the strip lies in contact with the bottom of the sheath. This method of construction constitutes the means for placing the strip under tension. The outer end of the spring lever 9 is free and is adapted to engage the upper edge 11 of the tang 7 when the blade 6 is in an extended position for the purposes well known in the art and in the manner as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawing. When the knife blade is folded so that the cutting edge thereof ex-v tends into the slot 5 in the manner as shown in Figure 3 of the drawing, the outer end of the spring lever 9 will engage the lower edge 12 of the tang 7 whereby the blade will be held in position within the slot in the extension against accidental displacement therefrom.

It will thus be seen from the foregoing description, that a knife attachment for a revolver hasbeen provided wherein the use of either the revolver or knife may be had without interference and furthermore the simplicity in which the knife attachment is associated with the revolver enables the same to be easily and readily actuated whenever it is desired to use the same. When the knife is in an extended position, it will be readily understood that the barrel 2 acts as a handle for the same. A device of 'thischaraoter may be manufactured at a very low cost a-nd obviates the necessity of having to carry a knife on ones person in addition to the revolver, thus combining two irnpleme'nts in one. i

Vhile I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention,- it is to be understood that various changes inthe' size, shape and arrangement of parts may beresorted to without departing from the'spi rit of the invention and the scope of the appended leil ,v 1

Having thus described my invention, what Iclaimis: v,

A revolver having its barreliormed on its under side with a channeled sheath, 1 said sheath being gradually decreased in depth outer end to its inner end and the last named end being a shouidered cutting blade having its tan pivoted between the outer ends of the si e walls of the sheath, said blade being adapted to be swung inwardly into the sheath when not in use, a oross pin extending through the side walls of the sheath and spaced a slight distance downwardly from the intermediate portion of theeurved bottom of the sheath, and a flat strip of spring metal having. its inner end inserted between the pin and the bot tom so as to flex theinner end portion of the strip though its Contact with the bottorn of the sheath, whereb, to plac, its outerfree end under tension, saic free end being adapted to bear on the tang or the blade.
