HAIR WAVING ACCESSORY Filed Nov. 24, 1930 INVENTOR Patented June -27, 1933 PATENT OFFICE HARRY BONAT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y. l
HAIR WAVING ACCESSORY .Application led November 24, 1930. Serial No. 497,639.
This invention relates to improvements in accessories for use in connection with the permanent waving .of hair and more particuu larly to accessories for use in connection with 5 the wrapping of hair around spools prior to the applicationof heat in the permanent Waving ofhair. Heretofore when hair was to be wrapped around a spool preparatory to the application of heat, it has been customary to wrap the hair around the spool manually by turning the spool with both hands, first with one hand and then with the other. As a result A of this turning, first with one hand and then with the other, considerable inconvenience in the wrapping ofthe hair around the spool resulted. It is almost impossible to wrap hair around a spool, turning the spool first with one hand and then with the other, without twisting the hair in such a manner as to prevent it from being wrapped evenly around they spool.
An object of the present invention is to provide means for assisting in wrapping hair evenly around a spool.
Another object of the invention isto provide means whereby unwrapping of the hair during the wrapping operation is prevented.
A still further object of the invention is to provide improved ratchet and pawl arrangements in connection with spools for preventing unwrapping of the hair.
According to the present invention', use is made of a device somewhat in the nature of a thimble for holding one end of the 'spool during the operation of wrapping the hair therearound while the other end of the spool is turned manually. Thisthimble may be a A metallic member of any desired configura- *o tion so long as it is provided with an opening into which one end of the spool may fit. If desired, the thimble may be provided with a pawl for engagement with ratchet teeth on the end of the spool soa that unwrapping of the hair is prevented. Furthermore, the invcntionjconsists in one instance of providing an improved ratchct'andpawl arrangement in conjunction with the spool itself. This improved arrangement consists briefiy of providing one end of the spool with 21 hollowed-out portion into which a pin having a circumferential collar of larger diameter and provided with ratchet teeth may be inserted. Also insertable into the end of the hollowed-out portion of the spool is a ringlike member provided with radial teeth for engagement with the before-mentioned teeth. When this collar is secured in Iplace Within the end of the spool, it is possible to turn the pin in one direction only, since it is pressed against the collar by means of a spring. It follows from this that by firmly gripping the pin, the spool itself may -be rotated in only one direction.
When the spool utilized in the waving of the hair is one employing this improved ratchet arrangement, the thimble of the invention may be somewhat modified; that is, a further opening is provided therein for the reception of the end of the pin.
In still another form of the invention, a ratchet arrangement similar to that previously described in connection with the spool may be built into the thimble, the movv able collar of -the arrangement being ada ted to be engaged by a solid pin extending rom one end ofthe spool.
In still another form of the invention, use may be made of the improved ratchet arrangement in connection with the spool, and, in addition thereto, an enlarged handle may be provided at the end of the elongated pin, whichhandle may be held rmly in one hand while the spool is rotated. The thimble may be dispensed with when this type of construction is used.
,Other features, objects andy advantages of the invention will become apparent by reference to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein Figure 1 is a perspective View of the use of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a view partially in section of' the improved ratchet mechanism embodied in a spool together with a thimble for aiding 1n the wrapping ofhair around the spool;

Fig. 7 is a View partiallyin section of an improved spool provided with the ratchet mechanism of thel invention, together with a handle for aiding in the wrapping operation.
Referring now to the drawing and particul larly to Figs. 2, 3 and 4, 10 indicates a spool around which hair may be wrapped prior to subjecting the same to heat for waving the hair. This spool l0 is provided with the usual hair-retaining member 1'1 and enlargement 12 at one end for permitting manual rotation thereof. The opposite end of the spool, however, is hollowed out as shown in Fig. 3 and also, if desired, provided with i radial teeth 13. Insertable into this hollowed-out portion of spool is a pinlike member 14-having an enlarged ortion 15 provided with radial teeth 16. ne end of the pin 14 may be made of square shape or any other desired configuration as shown at 17. Also insertable into the end of spool 10 is a. collar 18, likewise provided with radial teeth, 19 of shape and Size to engage the teeth 16.
The parts being shown in Fig. 3 before assembly, their relative position after assembly is shown in Fig. 2. The member 14 is first introduced into the end of spool 10 with a coil spring 20 therearound. As shown in Fig. 2,v the opening in the end of spool 10 has a portion of reduced diameter of size suicient to receive the pin 14 only, thereby providing a. Shoulder against which one end of spring 20 may press, the other end being pressed against enlargement 15. When the pin 14 has been properly introduced into the end of spool 10, the collar 18 is then likewise positioned therein and secured in place by means of a set screw 21 or any other suitable Q arrangement. With the collar locked in po-` sition, it is possible to rotate the pin 14 in one direction only, since the teeth 16 and 19 are held in engagement by means of spring 20. Furthermore, if the end 17 of the pin be held against movement, it is then possible to rotate the spool 10 in one direction only,y
since in this position the movable member is the collar 18 and not the enlargement 15. 1
When this type of improved spool with ratchet arrangement is used, it is advantageous to use the type of thimble of the inven- .tion shown `in Fig. 2 in conjunction therewith. This thimble, which is of prime importance in the wrapping of hair around the spool, consists in its simplest form of Va metallic rod 25 provided at one end with an i,915,2cs
opening circular in form so that annular walls 26 are thereby formed. Immediately adjacent to this opening is a further opening 27 of conguration corresponding to that 'of -the end17 of the pin forming a part of the spool. i
AThe operation of the mechanism just de scribed -is substantially as follows. Hair is given an initial wrap around spool 10, being held in place by the latch. The end of the spool having the pin protruding therefrom is then introduced into the thimble 25, the portion 17 entering ,the opening 27. With the parts in this position, the hair iswrapped around the spool by rotating the enlargement 12 with one hand, holding the thimble 25 firmly in the other hand. Since the ratchet arrangement embodied inthe spool permits rotation of the'spool in one direction only, and, .since the spool is locked within the thimble by means of the corresponding parts 27 and 17, it will be seen that only one hand actually accomplishes the turning of the spool during wrapping of the hair. By utilizing this thimble, the unevenness resulting from wrapping thehair by turning the spool-first with one hand and then withv the other is ov'ercome. As soon as the hair has been wrapped almost completely around the spool, the thimble 25 is withdrawn from the end of the spool and the pin 17 introduced into slot 30 in a standard extending from one end of a protector, the component parts of which grip the hair. With the pin 17 in place in the slot 30, vthe completion of the wrapping operation is carried out, leaving the spool inallyresting` on the protector.
` .A modification of the invention is shown in Fig. 5, wherein the thimble 25a is provided with'an opening similar to that in the end of spool l10, `into which may be introduced a pin 34 having enlargement 35 provided with teeth 36; together iwith a collar" 38 having teeth engaging teeth 36. This collar ishel in place against movement by vmeansof setv screw 41 or any other desired arrangement.-
largement 35 is provided with an opening of f f shape to receive theend of pin 42 extending from spool 10. This end 42 isl preferably square shaped or some other shape which per mits locking of that part with an opening. When the parts are 'in the arrangement illustratd, the wrapping of hair is accomplished in the same manner as before eX- plained," the only difference being that the turning of ratchet members is accomplished in thethimble itselfand not in the spool. When the hair is almost completely wrapped around the spool, the thimble is disengaged' and the pin 42 introduced into the'bottom of slot 30, which is rounded to permit rotation construction of protectors, the standard having slot` 30 is provided with a .paWl for en- The simplestfform of thmble 'forming a part of the invention is shown in Fig. 6 wherein use is made of a metallic rod 50 provided with an opening in one end of such character as to form an annular Wall 51. Into this opening may be introduced one end of ay spool Which may have ratchet teeth or not as the Case may be, such teeth being indicated at 52. The member may be provided With a pawl member 53 for engagement with teeth 52. This structure may be used with a spool having teeth as shown orwith a spool not provided'with teethas occasion may demand. {lVhen teeth are provided the engagement between such teeth and the paWl prevents reverse movement of the spool during the Wrapping of hair therearound.
A further modification of the invention is shoWn in Fig. 7 Wherem the construction shown in Fig. 2 is duplicated with the addil tion of slight changes. Instead of terminating the pin with a square portion 17 as in` Fig. 2, it is extended beyond this portion 17 into a rounded part to which may be secured in any desired manner a knurled knob 61. i
When this type. of construction is used, it is not necessary to make use of a thmble, since the operator merely holds the knurled knob 61 in one hand, turning the spool 10 by 'means of enlargement 12 with the other.
` Since the pin having the knob 61 secured thereto is in effect immovable, it is possible to rotate the spool in one direction only so that unwrapping of the hair is prevented. When the hairis almost completely Wrapped around l the spool, the spool may be positioned on the protector as before, fitting the squared portion 17 into the slot 30 and lthen completing the Wrapping operation.
It Will be apparent from the foregoing,
vthatthe present invention in its parts provides new, simple, inexpensive and useful accessories which form essential parts in `the preparation of hair for permanent Waving. It is to be understood that the invention is capable of modification from the illustrated embodiments and that therefore any limitation imposed thereupon must be imposed in view of the appended claims.
