NELSON E. IYIANl'l', OF BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOB. IO LAEDERS, FRARY & steamer NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, A COR-BORATIONQOF CONNECTICUT.
GURLING. Inon.
Application filed March 23, 19-22.. SerialNo. 545,975.
To (.171? whom it may concern:
citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curling Irons, fully described and represented in the-following specification and the accompanying draw-- ings, Forming a part of the same.
This invention relates to curling irons.
It is the principal object of the invention to provide an improved curling iron in which the clip may be readily removed and repositioned by the user.
With this general object in view the in vention consists in the combinations, details of construction and arrangement of parts which will. first be described in connection with the accompanying drawing and then more particularly pointed out.
In the drawing:
Fig. l. is a viewin side elevation of a curling iron with the clip in position for use.
Fi 2 is similar view with parts in cross section; and
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 33 ot Fig. 1.
Referringto the drawing, innit of the invention illustrated as an e2;- ample, a curler 11 is mounted in 12 ot polygonal cross section which is set in a handle l3. The handle may contain an electric heating unit of suitable construction, a portion of a plug connection being indicated at 14. I v
Associated with the curler l1 a clip arcuate in crosssection to embrace the urler in the usual manner. This clip has a votal connection hereinafter described. whereby it may be swung away from the curler. As-
formed integral therewith, is a handle 16' having at itsend a button or thumb-piece 1?.
ln order that the curler may be used with or without the clip, provision is ma do For the ready removal and replacement of ill-JClilj. There is provided a collar to which the clip 15 is connected and in structures ember w ing the invention to the best advantage this collar is polygonal in cross section like the sleeve 12 and is dimensioned to slip or telescope over the latter. Although'capahle of various constructions in that here illustrated as an on the clip, by rivets 19 or the like, is a collar in. the emb0di example, pivotally secured to lugs 15 20. This collar. hexagonal like the sleeve '12 and is enough larger to slip down over the latterwith an-easy fit. g Q I The shape. of collar 20 and sleeve 12 prevent the 'clip' rrom turningvwhen it is in assemhled position. QDQEIQQJDS is provided for normally. holding it against longitudinal movement but in such manner as to permit easy removal. This may be accomplished by spring pressure and in structures embodying the invention to the best advantage, the springutilized alsoserves to hold the clip clamped against thecurler. Although cape able of various constructions, in the e nbodi= mentillustrated, secured to the outer end of the clip handle 16 by the rivet 21 or the like that secures the button 17 to the handle is a bent bar spring 22. Opposite the free end of this spring, the wall of the collar 20 i cut away, as at 23, to permit the end or the spring to engage the sleeve 12. When the clip unit is in place the. spring 22, bearing against the sleeve 12, normally holds the clip unit in position; it also holds the clip to its duty against the curler.
When the curling iron is used with. the
clip, the clip unit is held in position asabove oescribed. .Pressure on the thumlrpiece 17 causes the clip to open in the manner of a jaw, the spring 22 yielding, and rivets 19 serving astrunnions on which the clip pivots. Upon release of this pressure on the thumbpiece, the spring again causes the clip to be clamped against the curler.
When it is desired to use the curler without the clip, a slight force is applied to the clip handle to overcome the force of tie spring and the collar 20 may he slid up the curler until the clip unit is free therefrom. To replace the clip in position for use, the collar 20 is slipped down thecurler and over s..eeve 12 and the end of spring 22 rides up onto-sleeve 12 and again locks the unit in position. To regulate the relative position of the clip on the: curler, stop means is provided.- Alt iough capable of various construction, in that here illustrated as an example, the rivets l9 eiztend far enough into the interior Collar 20 to serve as stops by engagii'ig the end of sleet-re 1.2 when the clip collar 20 is sl d down the sleeve 12. In replacing the cl p unitno careful manipulation is necessary. Owing to the construction described, the relative angular position or" curler and clipis immaterial, and the unit can be slipped. into locked position by a single, ment.
What is claimed is: p V 1. In a device of the class described, and
simple movein combination, a handle, a curler extending therefrom, a removable clip "for the curler, a handle associated with said clip, a collar connected with the clip to embrace the icurler, the Wall of said collar having a portion cut away to provide an opening, and a spring carried by the clip handle to extend through said opening vvhen'the clip is as-j seinbled with the curler, thereby to releasabiyhold the clip and collar in'position.
2. in a devi'ceof the class described, and in combination, a handle, a sleeve of polyghonalcrcss section therein, a curler mounted in said sleeve, a removable clip for the curler, a'collar carried by said clip and of cross section to telescope said sleeve, and
yieldable means for normally holding said with the curler, thereby to releasably hold the clip unit in position.
4. In a device of the class described, and in combination, a handle, a sleeve of polygnal cross section therein, a curler mounted in said sleeve, a removable clip for the curler, a collar connected With said clip and of a polygonal cross section to telescope said sleeve, stop means for determining. the position of the clipunit When being assembled, and yieldable f means for re lea sably holding the clip unit in position.
5. In a device of the class described, and 7 .in combination, a handle, a sleeve of polygonalcross section therein, a curler mounted 111 said sleeve, a removable clip for the curler, a collar of a crossseet onto telescope said sleeve, pivot members connecting said clip and collar and extending into the interior thereof to engage the end of said sleeve and serve as stops when the clip unit isassembled, and yieldable means for releasably'liolding the clip unit in posi tion. 1
6. In a device of the class described, and
in combination, a curler unit comprising a handle and a' curler extending therefrom,
and a removable clip unit conipi'ising'axclip to embrace the curler, a collar connected With the clip to fitfover part of the curler unit, said collar having an opening therein, and spring positioned to haveits end engage the curler unit through said opening When the parts are assembled.
7. In a device of the class described, and in combination,a handle, a sleeve therein, a
curler mounted in said sleeve, a removable clip for the curler, a collar With Which theclip is 1 pivotally connected, a stop member associated With said collarfor engaging the end of said sleeve when the collar is tele scoped thereon, and a spring for detachably holding the clip in position. 7
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand. r r
