IMPROVEMENT IN BOILER-COVERINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 19 l ,262, dated May 29, 1877 application filed October 26, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS B. STEVENS, of Hoboken, New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Boiler-Coverings, of which the following is a specification My invention consists in an improvement in the boiler-covering for which Letters Pat ent were granted me November 2, 1876, and numbered 169,492.
By my improvement I form each hollow metallic section for boiler-covering wholly from two plates of thin sheet-iron, or sheetiron galvanized, using no rivets or other material. I
Figure 1 shows a horizontal view of one of the hollow sections six inches wide and three feet six inches long. Fig. 2 shows a cross section taken through the dotted line 00 a: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows a longitudinal section, taken through the dotted line y y of Fig. l; but the full length of three feet six inches of this longitudinal section is not shown, the part between the broken lines H H being omitted.-
B is the outer plate of the hollow section; and O 0 show flanges bent on the two long sides of the plate B and O 0 show lips bent on the edges of the flangesG O.
A is the inner plate of the hollow section; and E E show flanges bent on the two long sides of the plate A, the edges of the flanges E E fitting into the recesses formed by the lips O O, and when the inner plate A is placed in the position shown in Fig. 2 the lips O O are compressed on the ends of the flanges E E, and thus fasten the plates A and B together. D shows the hollow space between the plates A and B, and R shows the hollow space between the plate A and the boiler.
The end of the sheet B is shown, at the left hand of Fig. 3, bent over, and forming the flange S, and closing that end of the hollow section. No lips are shown bent at the edge of the flange S, and no flange is shown on the end of the plate A, where it touches or meets tne flange S at T, the two plates A and B being fastened together wholly by the lips O O, as shown in Fig.2.
The plates A and B I generally make about one-fortieth of an inch thick.
When the hollow sections are made six inches 'wide, the flanges O G will make these sections sufficiently stiff for ordinary usage without the addition of cross-ribs.
I claim as my invention The combination of a boiler-covering made of hollow sections of metal, formed by the inner flanged plate A, secured to-the outer flanged plate B by the lips O O.
