UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY'R. GOGAY, OF COLUMBUS,.OHIO, A PANY, INCL, OF YORK, N Y
SHEET-METAL DOOR.
Original application filed March 17', 1917, Serial No. 155,501.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 27, 1921.
Divided and this application filed February 11, 1919. Serial No. 276,410.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY R. GOGAY, a subject of the Crown of Great'Britain, and resident of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet Metal Doors, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in sheet metal doors with the object in view of providing a door having its panel section formed with continuous peripheral moldings integral therewith, one of which moldings forms, together with its panel member, a recess arranged to receive a mirror, its panel member servin as a backing, separate supplemental mol ings being secured to the continuous peripheral molding for retaining the mirror in place.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawing in which,
Figure 1 represents a front elevation of one corner of a panel, mirror, moldings and the adjacent rail and stile.
Fig. 2 represents a vertical section taken in the plane of the line II-II of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 represents a view similar to Fig. 1 illustrating a modified form of panel molding and mirror retaining molding, and
Fig. 4 represents a vertical section taken in the plane of the line IVIV of Fig. 3.
The particular structure of the rail shown is described and claimed in the Patent No. 986,018 dated March 7,1911, and I do not deem it necessary to describe its construction only so far as it is used in connection with my invention.
The stile is constructed similar to the rail and is only shown to illustrate its relation to the panel and moldings. The stile is denoted by 1 and the rail by 2. The rail is provided with two horizontal portions 3 which extend toward each other at the panel side of the rail, said portions having laterally extending parallel flanges 4. A clamping member 5 preferably in the form of a rectangular tube is disposed in the rail and has one side resting against the inner sides of the portions 3. This side of the clamping member 5 is provided with two laterally extending parallelportions 6 between which may be placed a filling piece 7 of asbestos,
or other suitable material. The outer edges of the portions 6 have return bends 8 between which are respectively clamped the flanges 4 of the rail 2. The return bend portions 8 are provided with flanges 9', disposed adjacent to and substantially parallel with the portions 3 of the rail. Each flange 9 has a longitudinal corrugation 10, the purpose of which will be hereinafter explained.
The panel section is composed of two panel members 11-12 each formed with a continuous peripheral molding integral therewith.
The panel member 11 has a molding 13 which is provided with an inwardly turned flange 14 having a corrugation 16 which is adapted to coact with one of the corrugations 10 of the rail.
The panel member 12 is provided with a molding 17 which has a lateral wall 18 which forms, together with the panel member 12, a recess for the reception of a mirror 19. This molding 17 is also formed with an inwardly turned flange 20 having a corrugation 21 which coacts with the other corrugation 10 of the rail. The panel 12 serves as a backing for the mirror 19. The mirror is retained in position in the recess and in intimate contact with the panel 12 by separate and supplemental moldings 22 which are secured to the molding 17 by means of screws 23 threaded into reinforced portions 241 fixed on the molding 17.
The feature of the interlocking of the continuous peripheral panel molding with the stile and rail sections shown and described but not claimed herein forms the subject matter of my copending application filed March 17, 1917 Serial No. 155,501.
It will be understood that various changes may be restorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not intend to be limited to the details herein shown and described except as they may be specifically included in the claims.
What I claim is:
1. A panel having a lateral wall and a continuous peripheral molding formed integral therewith, said molding and wall being offset from the panel to form a recess for the reception of a mirror or other me1nher and a removable means for holding the mirror in the recess and in intimate contact with the panel.
2. A panel having a lateral wall and a continuous peripheral molding formed 1ntegral therewith, said molding and wall being offset from the panel to form a recess for the reception of a mirror or other member and means removably secured to the molding for holding the mirror in the recess and in intimate contact with the panel.
8. A sheet metal door comprising a panel member having a continuous peripheral molding formed integral therewith, said molding having a lateral wall forming, together with the panel member, a recess arranged to receive a mirror and a separate and supplemental molding secured to said peripheral molding for holding the mirror in the recess and in intimate contact with the panel member.
4. A sheet metal door comprising a panel member having a continuous peripheral molding formed integral therewith, said molding having a lateral wall, forming together with the panel member, a recess arranged to receive a mirror and a separate and (supplemental molding removably secured to said peripheral molding for holding the mirror in the recess and in intimate 30 contact with the panel member.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name this 14th day of January, 1919.
HENRY R. GOGAY.
