Description

April 25, 1933. P, c. NIELSEN GARBAGE CAN AND HOLDER THEREFOR Filed March 27, 1951 akamu;
m1# I Y Patented Apr. 25, 1933 PATENT OFFICE PETER G. NIELSEN, OIF POCATELLO, IDAHO GARBAGE CAN AND HOLDER THEREFOR Application led March 27, 1931.
* A still further object is to provide a garbage can and holder therefor which will be sanitary and which will have the lid so secured to the holder' as toprevent the lid being removed and to insure the lid always closing the can.
A still further object is to provide a garbage can and holder which will beset in a base heavy enough to prevent a dog or other animal from turning the can over and spilling the contents thereof. This device is especially adapted for use in restaurants, hotels and cafes in large cities and will preferably be made in large sizes only.
These objects I accomplish with the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which similar numerals and letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views and as describedin the specifican tion forming a part ofl this application and U pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing in which I have shown the best and most preferred manner of building my invention Figure 1 is a side elevation of the can holder. Figure 2 is a front elevan tion thereof. Figure 3 is a plan view of holder with the can and lid removed. Figure 4 is a front elevation of the holder with the can removed. 3 In the drawing I have shown the base or holder of my device as A, the lid as B and the can as C.
The base A is made by forming three sides 1, 2, and 3 of a square 4, of angle iron having 5 the front side formed of a piece of angle iron 5, secured across the front side of the square and having the ends 6 and 7 bent down. I then form a back for my framework of a piece of angle iron 8, bent in a U shape with the legs 10 and 11 secured to the junction of the sides 1, 2, and 3 of the square 4, and the Serial No. 525,666.
upward extended portion 9 bent back at a slight angle. Braces 12 and 13 are secured ,from the back iron 8 to the square sides 1 and 3 and then to the legs 6 and 7 by suitable rivets. This forms the framework for my can holder. I then secure two cross reinforcing wires 14 and 15 diagonally across the square, spaced medially from the bottom and with the ends secured in the legs 10 and 6 and 11 and 7, respectively. I then fill the square 4 With concrete, making the top even with the square of angle iron. In the legs 10 and 11 of the back iron 8 near the top end thereof, I` cut elongated slots 16 and between the legs 10 and 11, I place the lid B with the back end of the lid formed into a hinge tube 17 through which a pivot rod 18 is passed, said rod extending through the slots 16 pivoting the lid to the back but allowing for considerable up and down adjustment of the rear of the lid to insure the lid litting the cans when they are placed on the base A. A handle 19 is secured to the top side of the lid to provide means for opening'or lifting the lid Vfrom the can when placing dbris in the can. The can is made of heavy material with the top 20 square and the side walls 21'tapered inwardly toward the bottom 23. Handles 24 are secured to opposite sides 21 of the can by which it may be handled. j
The operation of my invention is obvious. Having thus described my invention I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim:
In a base for a garbage receptacle the combination of a base formed of a rectangular piece of angle liron having the corners bent down and having the interior space thus formed filled with concrete; back irons raised into a U-shaped back for said base, said back having slots in the sides thereof near the top; and a lid carried on a horizontal rod, said rod being carried in said slots, the lid being adjustable to lit any size of can set on the base. In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
PETER C. NIELSEN.
