ASH GQNTAINER Filed Nov. 12, 1928 017K raft,
Q mu, M4.
Patented July 12, 1932 UNITED STATS OTTO H. KRAFT, OF DENVER, COLORADO ASH CONTAINER Application filed November 12, 1928. Serial No. 318,739.
The present invention relates to an ash container which has for its prime object to provide a structure which permits ashes to be conveniently carried from a dwelling house to an ashpit or the like without the annoyance of the dissemination of ash dust and the like as usually occurs with an ordinary container.
A still further very important object of 19 the invention resides in the provision of an ash container of this nature which is formed with a bottom having an opening therein, and an inclined false bottom leading to the opening and a closure plate slidable on the hot tom so that the opening may be closed and opened in an easy and expeditious manner.
A still further very important object of the invention resides in the provision of an ash container of this nature which is ex- 29 ceedingly simple in its construction, strong and durable, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to manipulate, compact and convenient in its arrangement of parts, thoroughly efiicient and reliable in use and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure l is a side elevation of the container embodying the features of my invention showing portions in section, and
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the numeral 5 denotes a bottom which adjacent one end is provided with an opening 6. End walls 7 and 8 rise from the ends of the bottom 5 and side walls 9 rise from the sides thereof and these end and side Walls are connected together to form the corners of the container in any preferred manner.
The upper ends of the side walls 9 are formed to provide grooves 11 to slidably receive side edges of a lid 12 provided at one end with a handle 14:. An inverted U-shaped bail handle 15 is pivotally engaged at its extremities to the upper portions of the side walls 9 as at 16 and is utilized for carrying the container. A false bottom 17 is disposed between the side walls 9 and inclines downwardly from an intermediate portion of the end wall 7 to a point adjacent the opening 6 of the bottom 5 and spaced above said bottom and has for its purpose to direct the ashes toward the opening 6 when the container is being emptied. Slideways 18 are formed at the bottoms of the side walls 9 to slidably receive the side edges of a closure plate 19 which slidably rests on the bottom 5 and may he slid over the opening 6 to close the same and may be moved under the bottom edge of the end wall 7 and has an exterior handle 20 for the manipulation thereof.
A handle 21 is provided on the outside of the wall 7 adjacent the lower end thereof so that when the container is supported by one hand with the bail handle 15, the other hand may be engaged with the handle 21 to tilt the container to assist in emptying the ashes out through the opening 6 When the closure plate 19 is open. I
This ash container is to be used for carrying ashes from the furnace of a dwelling house to the ashpit located at the rear of the premises. The ashes are deposited in the containerby shovel or otherwise, from the furnace through the opening provided by the sliding lid on top of the container. The sliding lid isthenclosed making an airtight container, and the container filled with ashes is then carried to the rear ashpit and placed on top of the ashpit in such a manner that the hole or opening in the bottom of the conta'iner is immediately above the hole in the ashpit. V
The bottom slide closure plate is then pulled out allowing the ashes to empty into the ashpit. The purpose of this arrangement is to permit the carrying of ashes in windy weather without allowing the ashes to be blown and scattered as they usually are ,00
when an ordinary open container is used.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that the false, inclined wall 17 terminates close to the hole 6 so that the ashes will drain cleanly; also, that the closure plate 19 slides directly over the stationary bottom 5 and depends on said stationary bottom for its support. Normally the closure plate 19 covers the hole 6.so that in effect the stationary bottom 5 on which the closure plate 19 is nor- 10 mally superimposed sustains the weight of I the ashes.
It is thought that the construction, utility and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof.
The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in considerable detail merely for the purposes of exemplification since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description.
It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
In a container for the purpose described, and in combination, a body of rectangular form in horizontal section having a bottom with an opening therein adjacent one end thereof, side walls and end walls fixed with respect to each other and said bottom, the lower end of one end wall being slightly spaced above the bottom, retaining-flanges on the side walls and spaced above said bottom,
and an inclined false bottom arranged between and fixed to the side walls and to one end wall and extending from anintermediate portion in the height of said end wall to the adjacent portion of the opening in the bottom, and a horizontal closure plate supported on the bottom and slidable between the bottom and said retaining flanges and through the space between one end wall and the bottom and adapted in one position to close the said opening in the bottom wall and in another position to leave said opening free, said closure plate having one end normally projecting beyond the end wall that is spaced above the bottom.
In testimony whereof I alfix my signature.
OTTO H. KRAFT.
