Description

April 18, 1933. M. c. HENNESSY PANTIESw Filed June 1, 1932 INVENTOR WITNESSES ATTORNEYS Patented Apr. 1a, 1933 UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE MARY G. HENNESSY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO FRANKLIN SIMON & COMPANY. INC., 01? NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK PAN TIES Application filed June 1, 1932. Serial No. 614,810.
This invention relates to garments and par-" ticularly to improved panties, the object being to provide an improved garment of this kind which will act in the double capacity of underwear and a girdle.
Another object of the invention is to provide panties formed with substantially in elastic front and rear parts and elastic side parts or sections whereby a desirable form of panties is presented and at the same time a structure provided which will constrict somewhat the body of the person wearing the device.
An added object, more specifically, is the provision of elastic side members in panties together with disengageable front and wear extensions.
In the accompanying drawing,-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the figure of a person with a pair of panties embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a front view on an enlarged scale of the panties shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view through Figure 2 approximately on the line 3-3, the garment, however, being shown in the position it will take when in use.
Figure 4 is a sectional view through Figure 2 on line 44.
Referring-to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 and 2 indicate the front and rear sections,\and 3 and 4 the side sections. The front andrear sections are made of any desired kind of cloth which is substantially inelastic. The front section 1 at the upper end is comparatively narrow at point 4' for instance, and gradually flares toward the bottom, the edges being more or less rounded to the respective points 5 and 6.
From points 5 and 6 the edges of the garment taper to a point, the taper including the extension 7, which extension is provided with a portion 8 fitted into the V-shaped notch 9. The extension 8 is provided with disengageable fastening means, as, for instance, buttons 10 which extend through buttonholes 11 in the extension 12 forming part of the rear or back section 2. 'However, the extension 12 is really a separate piece and is stitched in place by lines of stitching in the V-shaped notch 13 formed in the back '2. The members 8 and 12 are substantially as illustrated in Figures 1 and 3. As illustrated-in Figure 3, the side elastic sections are reduced along the central line 16 and flare in each direction so that the respective ends 17 and 18 are wider than the central line. This causes. the garment to hug the person in a better manner and permits the upper edge 19 to slip over the hips and-then snugly fit the waistline while a proper tension is given to the hips and parts slightly below the hips so that all these parts are supported to a certain extent while allowing looseness and freedom below the lines 5 and 6, as illustrated in Figure 2. The elastic members 3 and 4 may be formed from any desired elastic material, but, is preferably from-elastic netting which may or may not be rubber treated. The upper edges 20 and 21 have stitched thereto on the rear face elastic tapes which tapes are also stitchedto the front and rear sections 1 and 2, whereby ample elasticity is provided to cause a proper fit of the garment when in use.
I claim I 1. Panties including a body having front and rear inelastic sections formed with extensions at the lower ends, said extensions at the point of juncture with the respective front and rear sections being of substantially the same width, said extensions tapering to substantially a point at their respective lower ends, means for disengageably connectin g said points together, and elastic netting on each side forming side sections, said side sections being wider at the top ,and bottom than at the center, and a reinforcing elastic tape *connected to each side section at the top.
elastic sections, a pair of elastic side sections connected to the front and rear sections, and" overlapping extensions from the front and rear sections projecting below said side sections forming leg portions, said extensions including substantially V-shaped overlapping inserts, disengageable means for fastening said inserts to ether, and substantially 5 V-shaped seams in t e front and rear sections for connecting them to the inserts and for providing a reinforcing structure.
3. Panties including a body-having front and rear sections, said sections being much wider at the bottom than at the top and tapering from the bottom to the top, each of said front and rear sections having extending portions at their lower ends, said extendin portions at the points of juncture with t e re spective front and rear sections being of sub- -stantially the same width as the bottom thereof, said extensions tapering to substantially a point at their respective lower ends and forming leg portions, and a pair of side sections connected to the front and rear sections, said side sections flaring from a central line in both directions, each of said side sections being made from elastic mesh material.
4. A combined girdle and panties comprising substantially identically shaped front and rear sections, each of said sections when spread out presenting a substantially diamond-shaped structure, said structures at the lower ends overlapping, means for detachably securing the overlapped portions of said-sections together, and a pair of elastic side sections, each of the side sections being constricted centrally, each of said sections extending from the topof the garment down- 5 wardly to a point appreciably above the bottom of the garment, a portion of said front and rear sections extending below the side sections and forming with the lower art of the side sections leg openings, said side sections at the center presenting a greater resistance to expansion than the end portions of the side sections, thereby acting to constrict A the hips when the garment is in use.
