PAPER CONT 111'. 1
Application filed July 21,
lhis invention relates topaper containers and more especially to a means whereby an all-over cap can be securely fastened to a container of this type.
A further object is to provide a fastening means which can be produced readily in the formation of the container and will .act to draw the cap or closure tightly to its seat.
With the foregoing and other objects in w view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the i details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a container having the present improvements the cap or closure being shown in section.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2, Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the container with the cap removed.
Figure 4 is a bottom plan View of the cap.
Figure 5 is a detail view of a portion of the fastening band.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a paper container which can be of any desired size and shape. The form illustrated is of the nesting type and has'an annular rib 2 providing a shoulder 3. That portion of the container bet-ween the shoulder andthe open end of the device 7 is cylindrical as indicated at 4 and is adapted to be closed by an over-all cap 5 the-annular m flange 6 of which seats on the shoulder 3. This flange has a desired number of inwardly extended nodes 7 pressed thereon.
Extending around the cylindrical neck portion a of the container is a paper band 8 formed of one or more thicknesses and adapted to fit snugly between said neck portion and the flange 6'. This band has angular slots 9 cut thereinto from the upper edge thereof. These slots are located where they 0 can receive all of the nodes 7 and the lower 1931. Serial No. 552,236.
end portions of the slots are preferably shghtly inclined as shown at 10. The band is held to the neck portion 4 by a suitable adhesive and, because of its thickness, it not only constitutes an eflicient reinforcement for 5.5 the neck but it also presents deep channels formed by the slots whereby the nodes are provided with ample bearing surfaces.
In a sealed package it would not be desirable to provide a slot through the wall of the container. Nor would it be possible, in a paper container, to form grooves of suitable depths and with the desired bearing surfaces, simply by pressing the-grooves into the wall of the container. Therefore, while an over-all cap has been found very desir- "able and has been used advantageously in connection with grooved or threaded containers of metal or glass, it has not heretofore been practical to utilize a locking 010- to sure of this type with a container made from sheet paper stock. By providing a paper tape having properly spaced slots cut therein and then wrapping the tape about a sheet paper container so as to cause the ?6 slots to. register and form annular grooves, the resultant structure has permitted the use of an over-all cap adapted to lock on the container.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a container formed of sheet paper stock, of a band wrapped about and afiixed to one end portion of the container, said band being formed of sheet paper. stock having slots adapted to register to form grooves opening through one edge of the band, said grooves being closed at their inner sides and held against spreading by the container wall to which the band is afixed, and an over-all cap for so embracing the container and band and having inwardly extended nodes for insertion in the grooves.
2. The combination with a container formed of paper stock and having an annular shoulder, of a band of paper stock extending around and afiixed to the container between the shoulder and one end of said container, there being slots in the band extending from one edge thereof and closed at mosses their inner sides and held against spreading by the surface of the container to which the band is aflixed, an over-all cap for snugly embracing the container and band to house 5 the band and for enga g the shoulder, and
inwardly extended n sertion into the ooves.
es on the cap for in- In testimony t at I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed m si .ature.
