7 I 4 Claims. (01-122 8) This invention is atubular boiler structure of the type adapted for railroad locomotives.
One of the objects of the invention is to.provide' an improved boiler of the character mentioned,
so constructed and arranged thatthe necessity of employing fire brick in the construction of the fire-box arch is avoided, thereby greatly reducing the cost of boiler maintenance. A further object is to provide a strong but flexible boiler construction, in which the safety factor is materially increased by improved water circulation. A fur ther object is to provide an increased'water heating surface, and means whereby all of the parts are readily accessible for inspection and repair;
A further object is to provide a supplemental water chamber, so positioned as to intercept and deflect the products of combustion inthe fire box, in such manner as to eifectively heat said chamber on two sides, said arch being positioned at any desired angle, and constructed of any selected width longitudinally of the fire box. The front wall '20'of each leg L is longer than the rear wall21, and each leg is provided'at its lower end with a flange 22, .which is secured to the free edge ofan opening 23 in the arch sheet 25. It-willbe noted that three legs L areshown with the middle leg somewhat longer than the others.

It will thus be seen that the chamber X consists of a bottom wall extending the full width of the fire box, a top wall consisting of the arch sheet 25, and the supporting legs L, communication between the chamber X and the water space being established at the top, the sides and the throat of the boilera In order to supplement the welded joints, the flanges l7 and 24 top and bottom walls, respectively,.of the chamber X are secured to the side walls of the inner shell 10 by means of the stay bolts 12, as shown. In a similar manner, the
lower wall 16. is secured to thearch sheet 25 by means of stay bolts 33 as shown. The flanges 19 are also secured to the crown of the outer shell 11 bymeans of the stay bolts 12, as clearly shown in the drawings, and the flanges 22 are secured to the'bottom wall lG-by the stay bolts 33. In order to provide for ready access to the interior'of the boiler for inspection and cleaning,
the outer shell is provided with a plurality of openings 35, in positions registering with the legs L closed by removable plugs 36, and similar openings 35 are provided in the side walls of said outer shell in line with the ends, of chamber X, said openings also being closed by similar plugs 36. It will also be noted that the throat T is provided with similarly plug-closed openings 37, opposite to the reduced portion R.
In operation, the products of combustion from the fire box will-be driven forwardly by the draft, until they impinge against the bottom Wall 16 of the chamber X. They will then be deflected rearwardly and upwardly until they can pass over and through the fire box in contact with the upper walls 25 and side walls of the legs L. Some of the products of combustion will also pass directly through the fines A. In this'manner the chamber X serves somewhat the functions of a superheater, and the water is caused to take up a very definite' course of circulation That is to say,
the colder water enters the-chamber X from the threat :T through reduced portion R, and flows upwardly as it becomes'heated. From-the chamber-theheated water is delivered by the'le'gs L to the space W,'above the inner shell, thereby making the circulation from the throat T to the top or steam space of the boiler, and then back between the shells to the throat-again.
The advantages 'of the invention-will'be readily ,understood by those skilled in theiart to which liitl'appertains, Itvvill'be noted, for instance, that by employing the chamber X in the manner: 'described and using it as a water 'heater, so that it is normally filled. with water, thereis'noneces- 'sity for utilizing fire brick to protect it .fromthe heat.. Therefore, by means of the invention, there is a great saving in the expense'due to the elimination of the fire brick and a considerable reduction in the'cost of maintenance; A further advantage is that ,thel'c'hamber X,'1and the crown of the inner shell are so connected that said chamber tends to brace said crown,c..a ndeyet there is the required flexibility necessary for safe .operation. At the same time the safety factor is greatly increased .by improving the water cir-' ,eulation and preventing the burning out of the parts; Another important; advantage is that :there is a-substantial increase of the'water heating surface and all of the parts'are readily ac- ,tcessible for inspection and repair.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1-- 15A boiler of the character described comprising an inner fire-box-enclosing shell, an outer shell, said shells being 'so constructed and arranged as to :provide .an intervening water space and a water throat between them, saidinner shell having relatively spaced elongated openings t'he crown portion thereof, an opening in th'e "throat and an elongated opening in each of the side Walls thereof, the last mentioned openings leading upwardly and rearwardly' from said throatan inclined shallow chamber having open :ends secured within said side openings and an :open lower side portion in communication with saidthroat opening, fire tubes insaid lower side -portion, and legs secured within the openings in' th crown of saidv inner shell and'also' secured wardly of said throat.
