Description

Jan. 8, 1935. w. T. ALEXANDER PAPER CONTAINER FOR FRUIT WRAP Filed May 26, 1952 4 4. mac/r AzExA/voeR Patented Jan, 8, 1935 PATENT ."OFFICE PAPER CONTAINER; FOR FRUIT WRAP William Taylor Alexander, Yakima, Wash, as-
signor to Columbia Paper Supply Company,
Yakima, Wash.
Application May 26, 1932, Serial No. 613,752
1 Claim.
My present invention, in its broad aspect, has reference to improvements in containers or cartons for fruit wrap and other papers; same being so formed that inspection and withdrawal of the contents is permitted without undoing or completely opening the container, carton or the like. To this end, I provide a unique slot or opening in the container or carton, which is normally covered by an adhesive fabric closure carrying an insert or filler for the slot. The fabric closure and insert are designed to be opened to permit inspection or withdrawal of the contents through the slot, and then replaced to prevent entrance of dust, dirt and the like into the carton or container. I am acquainted with certain similar devices on the market having merely a slit or slot, and my present invention differs therefrom in that the slot is relatively broad so that the fingers of a persons hand may be inserted, and a filler is provided in addition to the adhesive fabric closure, thereby affording surer protection to the contents, more adequate sealing, and at the same time facilitating withdrawal of the contents. At the present time that type of paper known as fruit wrap is cut substantially to size and wrapped in bundles with a heavy paper covering.
This manner of packaging is highly wasteful and unsatisfactory for several reasons; first, because paper is wasted in wrapping; second, because it is difiicult to inspect the contents; third, because when the package is once opened for inspection it is dimcult tomake it dust proof again, and; fourth, because the present package, once opened, cannot very well be resealed if only a part of the contents is used. My present invention eliminates all of these disadvantages, and is cheaper, more eificient, and more practical for the purpose for which it is intended, since it merely requires the provision of an inspection and withdrawal slot in the top of the package through which paper may be withdrawn by means of the thumb and forefinger; a linen tape closure provided with adhesive, and a filler for the slot carried by the tape.
Since the form and arrangement of my invention is subject to considerable change in detail and size without departing from the spirit of my invention; the scope thereof should be determined from the appended claim.
In the drawing wherein I have illustrated my present invention:-- a
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a carton provided with my invention and partly opened up;
Figure 2 isa transverse section; the closure strip being shown in two positions; removed and sealed;
Figure 3 is a top plan view;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view of a modified form of my invention, and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view of another modified form of my invention.
In the drawing wherein like characters of reference are used to designate like or similar parts throughout the several views:-
The numeral (1) designates a container for paper, or fruitwrap of the carton type, although it is to be understood that my present invention is not to be construed as limited to this, or any other, particular form of container or carton. The container (1) has a top (2) which is provided with a relatively broad slot (3) extending lengthwise thereof from end to end; or as shown in Figure 5, terminating short of each end to leave a part (4) of the top at each end of the slot. The fingers of a persons hand may be inserted in the slot, or the thumb and forefinger, to withdraw the contents from the container or to permit inspection of the contents.
Covering the slot is a length of linen tape, or other kind of fabric tape, designated (5) which is provided with adhesive (6) on its underside, and a filler strip (7) which is of a size to fit and rest in the slot (3) as shown in Figure 2. It-will be noted that the closure tape extends on either side of the filler strip ('7) to contact with the top of the container, so that when it is desired to seal the container the strip is merely sealed down on the container over the slot with the filler strip positioned in the slot. When it is desired to inspect or removethe contents of the container the sealing strip is lifted up and wholly or partly removed after the manner shown in Figure 1, thereby exposing the slot and contents, and rescaled when the inspection or withdrawal of the contents is finished. My invention forms a perfectly dust and moisture proof seal, which may be opened and closed as desired. t
In Figure 4 I have shown a small tab (8) at the end of the sealing tape to permit ready opening or raising of the same; it being necessary merely to grasp and raise the tab. In Figure 5 I have shown the tape terminating beyond the end of the filler strip as at (9) so that the end (9). will adhere to the part (4) left between the end of the slot and the end ,of the container.
It is believed that the operation and construction of my invention will be apparent from the foregoing; but the simplicity and practicability of my seal is emphasized, and the right to make minor changes in form and size is reserved provided such changes fall within the scope of what is claimed.
I claim:-
A removable and replaceable seal for use with a container having an elongated removable inspection slot therein; comprising an elongated sealing tape of greater width than the slot and having its under side gummed to adhere to both 10 side edges of the slot when pressed into contact therewith to completely covr the same, a filler member of substantially the same width as the slot and attached to the under side of the tape to fit into said slot in closing position and till the same; said tape and filler member adapted to be wholly or partially detached from the container to inspect or withdraw contents therefrom, and resealed to again close said slot in the container.
WILLIAM TAYLOR ALEXANDER.
