Description
Patented Nov. 13, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COATED FABRIC AND METHOD OFMAKING 'SAME West Virginia No Drawing. Application January 22, 1929,

28 Claims. (CI. 91-70) This invention relates to coated fabrics with particular reference to materials of the oil cloth type, and also to the method of producing the same.
One of its specialobdects is the production of a material which will possess all the good points of the usual types of oil cloth such as durability,
. fiexibility, water-proof qualities, etc., with the addition of beautiful effects in one or more colors and a crinkled or embossed effect on the surface which greatly enhances the artistic appeal of the material to the eye.
This crinkled or embossed effect is not ob tained in any manner by any of the well known printing, stamping, or embossing processes, but is accomplished by a chemical reaction which is an essential part of [the method of production which constitutes the invention.
It is obvious that this vast increase in the artistic and aesthetic appearance of this mateit can well be applied to uses for which the former types of coated fabrics were not well adapted or appropriate, without in any way interfering with its being used for the simpler homelier purposes.
Among its many uses this material is particularly well adapted for wall coverings, shelf goods, table cloths, draperies, curtains, window shades, costumes, theatrical settings, motor car seat coverings and trimmings, etc.
The process of production consists in the main of mixing together a drying oil, a semi-drying oil, and suitable mineral dryers, heating this mixture to a predetermined temperature at which point the heat is shut off and the mixture al lowed to cool. For the sake of clarity this mixture will hereinafter be termed mixture A.
The second mixture of the same ingredients and proportions as the foregoing is then heated to the same predetermined temperature and held there for a period of time suificient to produce a heavy plastic body. Hereinafter this mixture will be termed mixture B.
The two foregoing compounds are then mixed together, a slightly greater quantity of the first named compound. (mixture A) being utilized, and this third mixture is then ground with oxide of zinc, a suitable thinner and a color, as desired.-
This mixture will hereinafter be termed mixture C.
The final mixture may then be coated in any of the usual ways onto a suitably filled fabric, festooned on drying racks and dried by heat.
It has been found that for the first named mixture the following ingredients and proportions work satisfactorily:
China wood oil 1 gallon Soya bean or fish oil gallon Red lead 1% ounces 60 Litharge .1 ounces This mixture (A) may beheated toabout 540 degrees F., and then immediately allowed to cool.
For the second mixture (B), the ingredients 5 and proportions may be the same as for the mixture (A), but the heat treatment thereof is different, as it is heated to about 540 degrees F. and held there for several hours until the compound becomes a heavy, gummy, but plastic mass.
- The third mixture (C) consists of 1% parts'by weight of the mixture (A), and one part by weight of the mixture (B).
This third mixture (C) is then ground in equal parts by weight with oxide of zinc, with a suitable 7 quantity of naphtha or other thinner, and colj ors as desired.
The proportions named above can be varied slightly to meet existing conditions and obtain the best results. so
It has been found also that different and desirable effects in the finished article .can be obtained by substituting lithopone for the oxide of zinc, and white lead or titanox could also be used as other variants.
I claim:
1. A coated material of the oil cloth type comprising a suitable base material and a flexible coating thereon having a crinkled surface obtained without mechanical embossing, said coating comprising heat treated China wood oil, a semi-drying oil selected from the group of soya bean oil and fish oil and a suitable filler.
2. A coated material of the oil cloth type comprising a fabric base material and a flexible coating thereon having a crinkled surface obtained without mechanical embossing, said coating comprising a heat treated mixture of China wood oil, soya bean oil and a drier.
3. A coated material of the oil cloth type comprising a woven base fabricanda flexible coating 1 thereon having a crinkled surface obtained without mechanical embossing, said coating comprising a heat treated mixture of substantially twov parts of China wood oil to one part of soya bean oil and a drier.

A method for the production of a coated material having a crinkled surface obtained without mechanical embossing, which comprises heating a mixture of China wood oil and a semi- 11o drying oil to form a-plasti'c mass, mixing therewith a filler and a suitable proportion of at least one of said oils, applying the resulting composition to a suitable base and drying the coated material to produce the desired crinkled surface. 5. A method for the production of a coated material of the oil cloth type having a crinkled surface obtained without mechanical embossing, which comprises heating a mixture of China wood oil and soya bean oil to produce a plastic mass, adding thereto a mixture of China wood oil and soya bean oil heat treated at a suitable temperature, applying the resulting composition to a suitable baae, and drying the coated material to pro--.

7. A method for the production of a coated material of the oil cloth type having a crinkled surface obtained without mechanical embossing;-
' which comprises heating a mixture of China woodv oil and soya bean oil with a drier to an elevated temperature without producing substantial thick ening of the oils, allowing the mixture to cool, separately heating a second quantity of a similar Pnixture of oils to an elevated temperature and continuing the treatment for a sufficient time to produce, a gummy, plastic mass, mixing the said gummy mass and said mixture and applying the resulting product to a suitable base, and drying the coated material to produce the desired crinkled surface.
8. A method for the production of a coated material of the oil cloth type having a crinkled surface obtained without mechanical embossing,
which comprises heating a mixture of China wood oil, soya bean oil and a drier to an elevated temperature without substantially thickening the oils, allowing the mixture to cool, separately heating a second mixture of the said oils and drier to an elevated temperature to produce a gummy, plastic mass, uniting the two mixtures, incorporating therewith a-suitable pigment, applying the resulting material to a suitable base and drying the coated material to produce the desired crinkled surface.

A method for the production of a coated material of the oil cloth type having a crinkled surface obtained without mechanical embossing, which comprises heating a mixture of China wood oil, soya bean oil, red lead and litharge to about 540 F., immediately cooling the mixture, separately heating a second mixture of the said materials to about 540 F., continuing the heat treatment of said second-mixture to form a heavy, gummy mass, uniting the said mixtures, grinding the resulting product with a suitable pigment,
applying the resulting .material to a woven fabric base and drying the coated base material to produce the desired crinkled surface.

12. A coated material comprising a fabric base material and a flexible coating thereon having-a crinkled surface obtained without mechanical embossing, said coating comprising a heat treated mixture of China wood oil, soya bean oil and a drier.
13. A coated material-comprising a woven base fabric and a flexible coating thereon having a crinkled surface obtained without mechanical embossing, said coating comprising a heat treated mixture of substantially two parts of China wood oil to one part of soya bean oil and a drier.
14. A crinkle finish composition containing a heat treated, gummy drying oil component, a diluent vehicle and a pigment in proportions to yield a crinkle finish when dried on the surface of an article carrying said composition.
