Description

March 13, 1934. J. w. LITTLE 1,951,249
CONTAINER Filed Oct. l2, 1932 Patented 13, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CONTAINER John W. Little, Pawtucket, B. I., asslgnor to Forbes Lithograph Manufacturing Company, Chelsea, Mass., a corporation of Massachusetts 'Ihis invention relates to display containers and the object is to provide a strong, substantially rigid container which will permit inspection of the goods contained therein.
My invention may be well understood by reference to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing of an illustrative embodiment thereof, wherein:-
Figure 1 `is a perspective view of the container as used, it being shown empty;
Fig. 2 is a plan of a cardboard blank used in the construction;
Fig. 3 is a plan of a blank of transparent material used in the construction; and
Fig. 4 is a view, with parts separated, showing the container as utilized for shipping purposes.
Many articles are now wrapped in wrappers of transparent material such as regenerated cellulose (commonly known by trade names such .as Cellophane" and Sylphrap) which permit the inspection of the enclosed article. In accordance vwith my invention I provide a practical container, preferably of box-like form, which will permit similar inspection of the articles packed therein,
which articles themselves may, if desired, be enclosed in transparent wrappings. It is impractical, both economically and mechanically, to make such a container, for instance, a container similar to cardboard display cartons now commonly used, from regenerated cellulose by a mere substitution of the transparent sheet-like material for the prior cardboard.
The example of my invention here shown is a box of the usual rectangular shape with an open top. 'Ihe rear wall 5 and bottom 7 may be made of cardboard or similar relatively stiff material conveniently bent from a one-piece blank, as shown in Fig. 2. A complementary front wall 9 and side walls 11 may be bent from the blank 4o shown in Fig. 3'of suitable ilexible transparent material such as regenerated cellulose and may be provided with the flaps 13 and 15 which may lap respectively on the back wall 5 and bottom '7 and be adhesively secured thereto.
As seen from Fig. 1, when viewed from the front, especially when goods are contained therein, the box is essentially transparent. The transparent wall portion, herein formed by the panels 9 and 11, extends in three dimensions as distinct from 5o a mere at panel or window. At the same time the bottom 7 disposed in a horizontal plane and the back -disposed in a vertical plane hold the box in shape as an open-top container and give it substantial strength and rigidity, eliminating objectionable accidity or curling while effecting an economy in material. Individual articles received in the box may be removed through the open top, the box thus serving asa dispensing package. j I
The back 5 and bottom '7 may be suitably printed for attractive appearance and, if made of single surfaced stock,,the inner side, as shown in Fig. 1, may be the finished and printed side to give an attractive appearance when viewed throughthe transparent walls. The back wall 5 05 may be continued directly upwardly to provide the display card 17.
For shipment the display card 17 may be folded down over the top of the box. I prefer to provide (see Fig. 4) a telescoping cover 19 which may be 70 of rough, cheap cardboard, which will cover the open top of the box and the sides. When the cover is in position, the shipping package `thus provided has the top and sides which form the cover 19 of cardboard and the-remaining side 75 consists of the cardboard bottom 'I and the shipping package is thus essentially a complete cardboard box.
I am aware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the s. spirit or essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive; reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to 35 indicate the scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. A box adapted for the display of goods contained therein and the dispensing of the same therefrom comprising a generally prismatic .0 structure having a bottom and a rear wall of re1- atively stii material and complementary side walls of relatively flexible transparent material having edge portions anchored to said bottom and rear wall to be positioned thereby and proo5 vide in cooperation therewith an open-topped container.
2. A box adapted for the display of goods contained therein and the dispensing of the same therefrom comprising a generally prismatic structure having a bottom and a rear wall of relatively stiff material and complementary side walls formed from a single folded piece of relatively flexible transparent material having edge portions anchored to said bottom and rear wall to be positioned thereby and provide in cooperation therewith an open-topped container.
. 3. A box adapted for the display of goods contained therein and the dispensing of the same therefrom comprising a generally prismatic 110 structure having a bottom and a rear wall of re1- atively sti!! material and complementary side walls of relatively exible transparent material having edge portions anchored to said bottom and rear wall to be positioned thereby and provide in cooperation therewith an open-topped container, and a telescoping cover of relatively stiff material adapted to overlie the open top and enclose the sides to provide a shipping package.
