This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in holders for safety razor blades.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a holder for double or single cutting edge safety razor blades constructed for the support of the blade in a manner whereby the cutting edge of the blade may be exposed for service or hidden when out of use for the protection of the cutting edge, the holder and blade constituting a. cutter and handle therefor intended for any purpose desired, such as the cutting of threads, twine, paper, cloth, leather, a seam opener or ripper, an ink eraser and pencil sharpener or the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide a holder for safety razor blades wherein the safety razor blade is slidably mounted in the holder that is constructed to provide-a guard for the cutting edge of the blade when the latter is slid into the holder when out of use while the cutting edge of the blade is exposed to service when the blade is slid in the holder in the opposite direction, the holder being constructed to permit single engagement with either end of the blade for sliding the same-from one position to another.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a holder for safety razor blades of the foregoing character wherein the holder is provided with a handle apertured at its inner end to facilitate attachment of the holder to a clasp, key ring or other form of retaining device.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a holder for safety razor blades constructed in accordance with the present invention showing the blade extended with respect to the holder to service position;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view, similar to Figure 1, showing the blade retracted into the holder into inoperative position;
Figure 3 is an opposite side elevational view of the holder;
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 4--4 of Figure 3, showing a single cutting edge safety razor blade mounted in the holder and frictionally restrained from sliding movement by the sides of the holder;
Figure 5 is an edge elevational view of another form of holder for the support of a double cutting edge safety razor blade;
Figure 6 is a side elevational view of the holder shown in Figure 5;
Figure 7 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 7--7 of Figure 6, showing a double cutting safety razor blade inserted in the holder; and
Figure 8 is a developed plan view of the blank from which the holder shown in Figs. 1 to 4 is formed.
The holder may be constructed of any material desired, sheet metal being preferably used and being of a resilient character to provide frictional contact between the blade and holder for retaining the slidably positioned blade in service or inoperative position, the sheet metal blank from which the holder shown in Figures 1 to 4 is constructed being illustrated in Figure 8 comprising a blank 10 of the configuration illustrated having opposite side edges 11 and 12 respectively and opposite ends 13 and 14 respectively. The end 13 adjacent the side edge 12 carries an extension 15, the opposite sides of which are notched as at 16 while the end 14 adjacent the side edge 11 carries an extension 17, the opposite sides of which are cut away or curved as at 18. The blank 10 is foldable upon itself on the dotted lines 19 and 20 with the opposite side edges 11 and 12 moved into adjacent parallel relation with the curved edges 16 of the end extension coinciding while the curved edges 18 of the handle extension 17 coincide.
The blank 10 that is folded into the form of a holder for a safety razor blade is shown in Figs. 1 to 4, the fold line 19 of the blank being moved into a rolled channel edge 19a that extends into the handle extension 17a, while the opposite edge of the holder at opposite sides of the fold line 20 are formed with a double bead 21 defining a longitudinally extending intermediate rib 22. The side walls 23 and 24 of the holder above the beaded side 21 are disposed parallel with each other as shown in Figure 4 with the side edges 11 and 12 terminating in spaced relation.
The safety razor blade having a single cutting edge 26 and a reinforced edge 27 is slidably mounted in the holder being introduced therein at the end thereof opposite the handle 17a with the reinforced edge 27 received between the beaded sides 21 while the cutting edge 26 is received in the rolled edge 19a to be spaced therefrom as shown in Figure 4 for the protection of the cutting edge 26.
The side wall portions 23- and 24 of the holder frictionally contact the blade while the ribs 22 intermediate the side beads 21 frictionally contact the reinforced edge 27 of the blade. The razor blade is shown in service position in Figure l with the same projected beyond the rolled edge 19a of the holder to expose the cutting edge 26 while the reinforced edge 27 of the blade is positioned between the beaded side portions 21. To slidably shift the razor blade to inoperative position, the outer projecting end thereof is engaged by the finger for sliding the blade into the holder, the finger entering the notches 16 to effect complete housing of the cutting edge 26 as shown in Figure 2 and to project the razor blade into service position, the inner projecting end of the blade is engaged with the finger with the blade end and finger moved into the notch 18 for projecting the blade beyond the rolled edge 19a to the position shown in Figure 1, the frictional engagement between the holder and blade effectively retaining the blade in its adjusted position. The inner end of the handle 17a is apertured as at 28 to facilitate mounting of the holder upon a support of any kind such as a chain clasp, key ring or the like.
The holder shown in Figs. 5 to '7 is designed for a double cutting edge safety razor blade 25a having opposite cutting edges 26a in the holder being of elongated form, U-shaped in cross-section with side walls 29 and 30, the side wall 30 being cut away at opposite ends as at 31 to provide clearances for the return bent end extensions 32 carried by the side wall 29. The safety razor blade 25a has one cutting edge thereof inserted in the U-shaped holder and is retained in position therein by frictional engagement with the side walls 29 and 30.
From the above detailed description of the invention, it is believed that the construction and operation thereof will at once be apparent, and while there are herein shown and described the preferred embodiments of the invention it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. In a holder for safety razor blades, a holder having side walls, a rolled edge at each side of the holder with the cutting edge of a razor blade extending into one rolled edge, the rolled edges being extended at diagonally opposite ends to form a handle at one end and defining a finger depression at each end of the holder to facilitate finger engagement with opposite ends of the blade to slide the same into service and inoperative positions.
2. In a holder for safety razor blades, a holder formed from a blank folded upon itself to provide spaced walls, a handle extension at one end on one side edge of the holder, an end extension at the diagonally opposite end of the other side of the holder, the two extensions forming notches in opposite ends of the holder to facilitate finger engagement with each end of a safety razor blade slidably mounted between the side walls of the holder to slide the blade into service and inoperative positions.
3. In a holder for safety razor blades, a holder formed from a blank folded upon itself to provide side walls disposed in adjacent parallel relations, a handle extension at one end of one side edge of the holder, said side edge and handle extension having a channel outer edge to receive the cutting edge of a razor blade, an end extension at the diagonally opposite side and end edge of the holder extending in a direction opposite to the handle, said extensions defining end finger receiving notches a razor blade slidably mounted between the side walls of the holder with the cutting edge normally confined within the channel edge of the holder and said blade adapted by finger engagement with the ends thereof to be slid relatively to the holder to expose one end of the cutting edge outwardly of the channel edge.
4. In a holder for safety razor blades, a holder formed from a blank folded upon itself to provide side walls disposed in adjacent parallel relations, a handle extension at one end of one side edge of the holder, said side edge and handle extension having a channel outer edge to receive the cutting edge of a razor blade, an end extension at the diagonally opposite side and end edge of the holder extending in a direction opposite to the handle, said extensions defining end finger receiving notches, a razor blade slid- HARRY A.
