Patented Feb. .2, 1932 rrs serum orsics GEORGE E. DAWSON, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR T0 WILSON-JONES COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS CARD HOLDER Application filed January 14, 1929. Serial No. 332,451.
This invention relates to a card holder adapted for use in a visible overlapping indeX and concerns itself with such a carrier from which the card may be readily removed 5 if desired and replaced in a very expeditious manner.
The invention comprises the novel structure and combination of parts hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out 10 and defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanylng drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of this invention and in which similar reference numerals refer to similar features in the differ- 5 cut views: a
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a card carrier involving this invention showing the card in detached position with relation thereto.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view illustrating parts in perspective.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 illustrating the manner of inserting a card in the carrier.
The card carrier involving this invention consists of a rigid metal strip having resilient tongues 1 struck from the respective end portions thereof for cooperation with a tray in which the carriers are adapted to be used toprevent removal of such carriers from the tray by accident or the like as shown in my copending application Serial No. 332A53, filed January 14 1929. This rigid metal strip is provided with an inturned lip or flange 2 from its lower portion and which lip 2 is centrally located as shown in Figure 1. The strip is also provided with a pair of downwardly extending flanges or lips 3 which are in spaced relation as shown in Figure 1 whereby a space is left between the flanges 3 for the insertion of the finger or thumb for depressing the resilient flange 2 as shown in Figure 3 for the insertion of the card or sheet which is represented by the reference numeral 4-. To this end the card is shown as provided with an upper notched or cut-out portion 5 for receiving the thumb or finger that depresses the inner flange 2 as the card is pushed upwardly into the position shown in Figure 3. It will be noted that the flanges 2 and 3 which are sufficiently resilient to provide a good frictional engagement with respect to the card therebetween sufliciently overlap to form an eflect-ive clamp. It will be appreciated that if the clamping eflect produced by the flanges 2 and 3 is not too great the card may readily be detached by just pulling upon the same. However, if the flanges 2 and 3 are sufliciently rigid to prevent the card or sheet from being drawn out from its clamping position, it is only necessary to manually depress the flange 2 when the card may be readily withdrawn.
This particular carrier possesses numerous advantages over carriers of the prior art. Among these advantages may be mentioned the capability of the carrier to sustain a very thin and flexible sheet or card. This arises from the fact that the carrier is manually amnipulated when a card or sheet is inserted and the engagement of the sheet or card by the overlapping lips or flanges 2 and 3 will securely sustain a thin sheet or card as readily as a. thicker card. This advantage will al low the user to employ rather thin sheets or cards and thereby prevent a bulky index.
I am aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention 1. A card holder comprising a substantially tubular member having a resilient lip and a pair of spaced lips overlapping said resilient lip whereby a space is formed between said overlapping lips for depressing said resilient lip.
2. In a card index, a card holder having a nether resilient lip and an overlapping li for receiving one edge of a card therebetween, said card having a notch and said overlapping lip being so constructed as to expose said notch whereby said nether lip may be manually operated.
8. A sheet-metal card holder having an upturned resilient lip and a downturned lip overlapping the resilient lip having a cut- "Iii G I away portion for access to the resilient lip whereby said resilient lip may be depressed. 4. A card holder comprising a sheet metal member having a resilient nether lip, and a pair of spaced overlapping lips whereby a space is formed between said overlapping lips for depressing-the nether lip, in combination with a card positioned between said nether lip and said overlapping lips and having a notch. in its upper margin norm-allypos'itioned betweensaid overlapping lips. Intestimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name at Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.
