Patented Feb. 6, 1934 PATENT OFFICE SPOOL BOX I Pellita dc Castro-Barberena, New York, N. Y. Application January 4, 1932. Serial No. 584,659 4 Claims. .(Cl. 20652) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a spool box.
The invention has for an object the provision of a spool box which is characterized by an arrangement whereby the spools of cotton thread or ribbon are conveniently stored and capable of being conveniently used.
As another object of this invention it is proposed to arrange the box in a manner to provide compartments for the holding of needles, small scissors and other small articles.
As another object of this invention it is proposed to provide a cover for the box with slots at the sides so as to allow the drawing of threads through the sides of the box.
As another object of this invention it is proposed to provide a substantially U-shaped wire member for ro-tatively supporting the-spools, and formed with vertical slots in the free ends of its arms adapted to be engaged by supports of the cover of the box for the purpose of preventing displacement of the parts.
As a still further object of this invention it is proposed to construct the parts so that the cover of the box may be placed upon the bottom and in this new condition engage the projecting ends of the wire for also holding it in place.
As a still further object of this invention it is proposed to construct a box of the class mentioned which is of simple durable construction, dependable in use and efiicient in action and which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:-
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a spool box constructed according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of another embodiment of a spool box constructed according to the same invention.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. l but shown with the cover in place.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the spool box in a closed position.
The spool box, according to this invention, comprises a box which is open at the top 11 and is formed with a pair of longitudinal partitions 12 and 13 dividing off spool chambers 14 and a central chamber 15. Spools 16 are mounted within the spool chambers and arranged in end contacting relation in a straight line. In Fig. 1 the spools are shown carrying threads 17. In Fig. 2 the spools are shown provided with ribbons 18. In both cases, the threads or ribbons extend from side openings 19 in the box to the outside so that it may be used as needed.
A substantially U-shaped spool wire support 20 is provided which has a central portion 21 located upon the outer end of the box and arms 22 extending longitudinally through the spool chambers and more particularly through the central opening in the spools. The extended ends of the arms 22 are formed with opposite vertical slots 23. A cover 24 is capable of being engaged over the top of the box and of a length so as to extend snugly over the central portion 20 of the spool supports as indicated by the dot and dash lines 25 in Fig. 1. The cover 24 is formed with slots 26 capable of engaging over the vertical slots 23 in the ends of the arms for the purpose of locking the spool holder in place. Other slots 2'7 are formed upon the sides of the cover to allow for the passage of the threads or ribbons as the case may be. The parts are so proportioned 80 that the box may be opened and the cover placed on the bottom thereof as indicated by dot and dash lines 28 in Fig. 4. In the new position, the slots 26 also engage the grooves 23 and the slots 2'? allow the passage of the threads or ribbons.
In Fig. 1 the'central compartment 15 is shown with a pin cushion 2'7, a thimble 28, and a tape measure 29. An elastic band 30 is also attached within the central compartment whichholds packages 31 of needles. In Fig. 2 the central compartment 15 shown holding a pair of scissors 32 and a ribbon needle 33. A transverse partition 34 divides ofi a section of the compartment 15 and the cover 35 which hinged at 36 closes the dividcd off section for the storing of small articles such as buttons or the like.
In use, the various threads or ribbons may be drawn and cut off to lengths desired. The various articles from the compartment 15 may also be used. When the boxes are stored away the covers of the boxes engage and holdthe spool holders in place so that accidental dropping of them will not cause a spill with all the spools flying in various directions. Likewise, when the spool box is in use and the cover is open, the cover is engaged upon the bottom of the box and also holds the spool holder in place to prevent a spill as before mentioned.
It is to be understood that the U-shaped spoolwire support may be substituted with a pair or individual supports and provided with extended ends 22 and vertical slots 23 at both ends. A long single spool support may also be used in factories and secured either under or above a table for thread spools or for ribbon tape reels.
It is also to be understood that any number 01' my spool boxes 10 may be slidably located in a vertical chest.
It is further to be understood that the spool box may be made of any suitable material such as cardboard, wood, metal, reinforced leather, etc. 7
While I have shown and described the'preierred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined inthe appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desirento secure by L nited. States Letters Patent is: l
