IMPROVEMENT IN WATCH-PROTECTORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 83,867, dated October 31, 1876; application filed September 16, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Dr. HENRY A. ROSEN- THAL, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Watch-Protectors, of which the following is a specification:
The figure is a side view of my improved device, part being broken away to show the construction.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved device for connecting a watch-chain and watch with each other, and which shall be so constructed that it may be set to prevent the watch from being withdrawn from the watch-pocket by a thief, and which, at the same time, shall be simple in construction and convenient in use.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
A is a short tube, the upper end of which is closed, and has an eye, c attached to it. The lower end of the tube A is flared, and'in said tube is fitted a block, B, which slides up and down within it. The movement of the block B is limited by a screw, 12, inserted in it, and which passes through a longitudinal slot, a formed in the side of the tube A. The slot a at its upper end is extended at right angles with the length of the tube, so that by turning the tube so as to bring the screw b into the lateral arm of the slot a the block B will be locked in the upper end of the said tube. To the center of the lower end of the block B is attached a stem, 0, to the lower end of which is attached a cap, D. The cap D is made of such a size and the stem 0 of such a length that when the block B is drawn to the upper end'of the tube A, the edge of the said cap D may rest against and fit upon the lower end of the tube A, closing said lower end. To the lower end of the block B, at or nearits edge, are hinged four, more or less, arms, E, which have points or hooks formed upon their lower ends, and projecting at right angles, as shown in the figure.
The hooks E are held out by springs F, attached to the end; of the block B or to the stem 0, and which rest against the said hooks E. To the bottom of the cap D is attached an eye, 01, to which the stem of the watch is attached, so that the device may enter the watchpocket with the watch.
With this construction, when the tube A has been pushed down to the cap D, and turned so as to bring the screw b into the lateral arm of the slot er the watch may be drawn from the pocket as readily as if the device were not there.
To guard against having the watch drawn from the pocket by a thief, the tube A is turned to bring the screw b into the upper end of the longitudinal arm of the slot M; then, if the watch-chain is drawn upon, the tube A is drawn upward upon the block B, and the springs F force the hooks E outward, which catch upon the sides of the pocket and prevent the watch from being withdrawn from said pocket.
The watch can be withdrawn by its owner by pressing the tube A downward, which withdraws the hooks E and covers them, and then turning the tube to one side, bringing the screw b into the lateral arm of the slot a which looks the device closed.
The device may also be used for securing a pocket-book or other article from being withdrawn from the pocket by a thief. [n this case the eye a of the tube A is attached to the pocket-book, and a small weight is attached to the eye 01 of the cap D, so that, should a thief attempt to withdraw the article, the said Weight detains the block B, while the tube A slides up, and the hooks E spring out and catch upon the pocket.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The tube A, flared at the lower end, and having right-angled slot a in combination with a block, B, having screw 1), stem C, and hooks E, the latter provided with springs F, as and for the purpose specified.
