Be it known that I, GEZA COVATSH, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety-Racks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a safety rack and has as its object to provide a device of this character which is adapted to accommodate a hat, one or more coats and canes or umbrellas so as to prevent the stealing of any of these articles.

In the accompanying drawing Figure l is a partly elevational, partly sectional View of my device, with the above mentioned articles hung thereon, the rack being open and dotted lines indicating the position of some of its parts when closed. Fig. 2 is a detail view in plan and Fig. 3 is a front elevation of my device.

The same reference character is applied to the same part throughout the different views.

Referring to the drawing, represents a metal casing suitably secured to a wall or other vertical support, integral with a square tube 11 horizontally projecting forward, open at its front end. On top of the tube 11 I provide a vertical peg 12 adapted to support a hat and, at a suitable distance there from an attachment 13 resembling, in shape, an anvil. A square bar 14, is slidably inserted in the tube 11 and provided, at its front end, with a knob 15 and at its rear end with a hook 16. Between the rear end of the bar 14 and the rear wall of the casing 10 I provide a helical coil spring 17, tending to keep the bar 14 in the position shown in Fig. 1. To the bar 14 is hinged an upwardly projecting, hat securing member 18 and a coat-hanger 19 for which suitable slots are provided in the bar 14 and in the tube 11, as illustrated. There is also a recess 20 formed in the bar 14 accommodating the hooked end 21 of the coat hanger 19 and an automatic latch 22 adapted to engage same when the device is closed, but retained in the open position of the rack, by a hook 23 provided in the recess 20 of the bar 14. On one side of the tube 11 I provide a horizontally projecting member 24 having, in one of its vertical sides, semicircular indentures 25 and, facing same, a counterpart 26 to the member 24, having corresponding indentures 33, is hinged to the bar 14 within a horizontal slot formed in the Specification of Letters Patent.

bar 14. A spring-latch 27 is provided in the casing 10, adapted automatically to engage the hooked end 16 of the bar 14 when the latter is pushed in and to release same on turning a key inserted in the keyhole 28.

In the open position of the rack, the hat, coat and umbrella or cane are hung thereon as illustrated in Fig. l and the bar 14 is then pushed in by means of the knob 15 into the positlon shown in dotted lines. Thereby the hat securing member 18- will be closed down on the attachment 13 and hold fast the brim of the hat, the coat-hanger 19 will be raised and its hooked end 21 be engaged by the automatic latch 22 in the recess 20. The member 26 will also be pressed against the member 24 and lock the umbrella or cane in the circle formed by the corresponding indentures 25 and 33. A roof 29 horizontally projecting from the top of the tube 11 over the members 24 and 26 prevents the rifling of this part of the device. The latch 27 catches the hook 16 of the bar 14 which is thus locked in the position just described. To open the rack, insert a key fitting into the hole 28, give it a turn, thereby pressing down the latch 27 and releasing the hook 16, whereupon the bar 14 and associated mechanism, prompted by the action of the spring 17, automatically takes the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1.

An opening is provided in the front wall of the casing 10 giving access to the mechanism contained therein and is closed by a cover 30 which cannot be removed clandestinely under normal conditions.

The surfaces of the attachment 13 and the hat securing member 18 which come in contact with the hat, may be provided with pads of resilient material, 31 and 32, respectively, in order to grip the hat securely without damaging it.

It is understood that, while I have thus described the preferred form of my invention, I do not want to be limited to the mechanical details thereof, but may resort to such alterations and modifications as come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

I claim:

1. In a safety rack, a bracket secured to a vertical support, a square tube extending horizontally therefrom, a bar slidable throughout the entire length of said tube,

means tending to move said unitary bar normally outward, means for locking said bar when in a retracted position, a plurality of members hinged to said bar adapted to support miscellaneous articles, said members V by the mentioned articles are secured when said bar is locked in its retracted position.

2. In a safety rack, a bracket secured to a vertical support, a rectangular tube rigid with said support and extending horizontally therefrom, a unitary bar movable in said tube, a spring normally pressing said bar outwardly, means for automatically locking said bar in its rearward position, means for releasing said locking means, article engaging elements rigid with said tube, and cooperating elements pivoted in said bar, said cooperating elements all being guided and actuated through slots in said tube into operative engagement by pressure applied to the end of said bar.

8. In a safety rack, a horizontal tube rigidly mounted at one end, a bar slidable in said tube, means for moving said bar normally forward, means for pressing said bar rearward, means for locking said bar in its rearward position, a post and an anvil block rigid with said tube adapted to receive a hat, a clamp element pivotedin said bar movable through and guided by a slot formed in said tube, cooperating with the anvil, a hook pivoted in said bar adapted to receive garments, said hook being movable through and guided by a slot in said tube, means for engaging said hook, a lateral member rigid with said tube, adapted to receive a cane or the like, a member cooperative with said lateral member pivoted in said bar extending through said tube in register with the lateral member, said clamp elements, hook and pivoted member being operatively actuated by the rearward movement of said bar.
