UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY A. BUZZELL, OF ST. JOHNSBURY, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN VENTILATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,535, dated October 24, 1876; application filed June 6, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY A. BUZZELL, of St. Johnsbury, in the county of Caledonia, and State of Vermont, have invented a new and Improved Ventilator and Clothes-Drier, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a sectional side elevation of my improved ventilator, and Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, partly in section, on line 0 0, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts. The invention relates to an improved ventilating attachment for stove-pipes, by which the rooms may be effectively ventilated from the top and bottom; and the invention consists of a drum attached to the stove-pipe, the drum being connected by pipes and funnels with the story below and with the upper and lower part of the room, to draw ofl' the air to the chimney.
In the drawing, A represents a cast or sheet iron cylinder or drum of any desired diameter, which is inserted in the stove-pipe at suitable height and supported by circumferential rims or collars on the same. The drum A has a damper, B, and is provided above the same with pipe-sockets O, for inserting at one side an elbow-pipe, D, with upward-extending funnel D and damper D and at the opposite side an elbow with downward-extending pipe E, that passes through the floor to the cellar or other story below, and takes up by a funnel, E the heated and vitiated air from the lower room, and draws the same through pipe E, drum A, and the stove-pipe to the chimney. Asuitable damper, E at the lower part of pipe E, serves to open or close the communication with the lower story. An opening, F, of pipe E, with sliding register near the floor, admits the ventilation of the lower part of the room, if desiredywhile the upper funnel E ventilates the top part of the room. The drum A is cast with suitable sockets and lugs a, for
inserting and supporting the radial arms G of the clothes-drier. In case the drum is made of sheet-iron the supporting-sockets may be attached by an encircling band or left otf entirely. The arms G extend radially from the drum and dry the clothes by their proximity to the heated ventilating-drum A. The draft produced by the heat of the stove-pipe in the drum draws the bad air through the funnels and pipes to the drum, and ventilates thereby the rooms in an effective and reliable manner.
Having thus described myinvention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of a ventilating-drum, A,
inserted in stove-pipe, with upward-extending HENRY A. BUZZELL.
