Description
J. V. MDNTGOMERY. KITCHEN-VENT'ILATOR. 51 170 880 Patented Dec. 7,1875.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH V. MONTGOMERY, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN KITCHEN-VENTILATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,880, dated December 7, 1875; application filed August 27, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH V." MONTGOM- ERY, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Kitchen-Ventilator, of which the following is a specification: v
The nature of my invention relates to a ventilating attachment to a kitchen stovepipe, by means of which the vapors and odors generated in cooking may be drawn into and carried off by the stove-pipe. The invention consists in a sleeve on the upper part of the vertical stove-pipe, having a row of slots under a conical flange, which sleeve can be rotated, so as to disclose a row of slots in the said pipe, through which the odorous air-currents may pass into the flue.
Figure 1 is a perspective View with a portion of the flange broken out. Fig. 2 is a vertical section at y y. Fig. 3 is a cross-section at a; m.
In the drawing, A represents a length of stove-pipe, which should be the upper vertical one over the kitchen-stove. B is a pipe sleeved on the joint A, and is supported in position by an outwardly-turned flange, a, on the lower end of the latter. 0 is a large conical flange on the upper end oi the sleeve, which may be rotated on the pipe by taking hold of the latter, or it may be provided with studs for that purpose. b are vertical slots cut in the sleeve under the flange, and b are others cut in the same plane in the pipe. A stop, 0, on the pipe limits the rotation of the sleeve, which may be turned to disclose the slots b, or to close them entirely. When the slots are coincident there Will.be an inward draft of air into the pipe, the vapors and odors rising from food in preparation on the stove being collected by the cone to facilitate their introduction to the pipe. The ventilator also serves to check the draft of the stove when open,
while it also purifies the atmosphere of the kitchen by continually changing it;
What I claim as my invention is- The slotted sleeve B and cone 0, in combination with the slotted pipe A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JOSEPH V. MONTGOMERY.
