Description

Get. 20, 1931. N. HAWRYLASZ WINDOW CLEANING SQUEEGEE Filed May 20, 1930 Patented Oct. 20, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT: OFFICE NYKYFOR HAWRYLASZ, OF MIN 0T, NORTH DAKOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF 'lO E. .ANDROS, OF MINOT, NORTH DAKOTA WINDOW CLEANING SQUEEGEE Application filed May 20, 1930. Serial No. 454,122.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in window cleaning Squeegees.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a window cleaning squeegee embodying a holder for a squeegee strip and backing strip with a clamp member for the holder slidably moved into interlocking engagement therewith and being formed of resilient metal bending to move the side walls of the holder toward each other for binding the squeegee and backing strip in the holder.
A further object of the invention is to provide a squeegee of the type above set forth wherein an interlocking connection between the holder and squeegee strip in the form of openings in the squeegee strip and fingers at one edge of the holder to be extended into the strip openings for retaining the squeegee strip in the holder and also permittingreversible mounting of the squeegee strip so that when one edge thereof becomes worn the same may be reversed to present a new edge for cleaning purposes.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a window cleaning squeegee wherein the squeegee strip is removably and reversably mounted in a holder in a manner to present a single corner edge for operation, the strip embodying four corner edges that may be selectively positioned for use when any of the edges have become worn, thereby greatly increasing the length of use of the squeegee strip.
With the above and other objects in view that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists inthe novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a rear elevational view of a window cleaning squeegee constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the squeegee and backing strip mounted therein;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary front elevational view showing the parts partially separated and the method of assembly;
Figure 4 is a side elevational View of the squeegee strip showing the spaced slots midway the side edges thereof to receive the edge fingers on the holders;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the backing strip for the squeegee;
Figure 6 is an end elevational view showing all parts assembled;
Figure 7 is an end elevational View of the holder showing the angle fingers at the edge of the squeegee strip holder adapted for extending into openings provided in the squeegee strip Figure 8 is an end elevational View show ing the clamping member of the squeegee; and
Figure 9 is an end elevational view of the squeegee strip.
The squeegee embodies a holder formed of metal and of U-shape in end elevation having side legs 1 and 2 connected at their inner ends by the cross wall 3, the leg 1 being slightly longer than the leg 2 while the free edge of the leg 2 carries angularly extending inward ly directed fingers l spaced from each other as illustrated. The legs 1 and 2 adjacent the cross-wall 3 are provided with outwardly directed longitudinally extending ribs 5 for purposes presently to appear.
The squeegee strip 6 is of a width substantially twice the width of the leg 2 of the holder and is provided midway its side edges and extending longitudinally thereof with a plurality of spaced slots 7 shown in Figure l. The squeegee strip 8 is placed in the holder and the angle fingers 4 enter the slots 5 for holding the squeegee strip in position against escape from the holder. The backing strip 8 in Figure 5 is then placed in the holder in contact with the squeegee strip (3 and the side leg 1 as shown in Figure 6, the backing strip 8 holding the squeegee strip 6 engaged with the leg 2 of the holder. The squeegee strip 6 has four corner edges 6a as shown in Figure 9 so that when one of the corner edges has become worn or damaged, the strip 6 may be shifted or reversed in the holder to present a new working edge 6a for use. With a construction of this character, greater length of use of a single squeegee strip is afforded as I of resilient metal with the side legs 9 and 10 converging upwardly as illustrated. The clamping member has a handle socket 12 secured thereto as at 13 for the reception of a handle for manipulating the squeegee. The side legs 9 and 10 of the clamping member a djacent the inner cross-wall 11 are longitudinally grooved as at 15 forming outwardly directed beads that cooperate with the beads 5 upon the holder. The clamping member is aligned with the holder and then slidably mounted thereon with. the beads 5 and 15 interfitting as shown in Figures 3 to (3 for retaining the holder in the clamping member. the converging side legs 9 and 10 of the clamping member tensioning the side legs 1 and Q of the holder for moving them toward each other into binding engagement with the squeegee and backing strips.
From the above detailed description of the invention. it is believed that the construction and operation thereof will at once be apparent. it being noted that by providing the speed slots 7 midway the side edges of the squeegee strip 6. the strip may be reversibly mounted in the holder when one edge thereof becomes worn, thus prolonging the life of the squeegee strip and while there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim 1. A squeegee comprising a U-shaped holder, a squeegee strip and a. backing strip in the holder. angularly directed fingers on one edge of the holder. the squeegee strip having openings therein to receive the fingers, and said backing strip holding the squeegee strip in position for interlocking engagement with the holder.
2. A squeegee comprising av U-shaped holder. a squeegee strip and a. backing strip in the holder. angularly directed fingers on one edge of the holder. the squeegee strip having openings therein located along the substantially central longitudinal axis of the squeegee strip to receive the fingers, and to permit reversing of the squeegee strip in the holder. said backing strip holding the squeegee strip in position for interlocking engage- NYKYFOR HAWRYLASZ.
