UNITED STATES 'PATENT OFFICE.,
BURKNER F. BURLINGTON AND LEWIS H. PRIEST, OF SOUTH LANCASTER, MASSACHUSETTS; SAID BURLINGTON ASSIGNOR TO SAID PRIEST.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPIRIT-LEVELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,801, dated October 3, 1876; application filed Maren 11,1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BURKNER F. BUR- LINGTON and LEwIs H. PRIEST, of South Lancaster, in the county of Worcester and State drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specication.
Our invention relates to spirit-levels and it consists in providing the glass tube with a rubber covering. It also consists in a bent tube with one or two arms or legs extending at right angles, so as to make a single or double plumb and level with one bulb, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in whichi Figure l is a longitudinal section of a spirit-level embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a section of an angular tube used therein.
A represents the usual stock for spirit-levels. At B we show a single glass tube, inserted and held in the stock in the ordinary manner. Before inserting and fastening the tube B a rubber tube, C, is placed around the same, said rubber tube having a hole out in its center on top.
By the use of this elastic tube the glass tube is not liable to be fractured or broken. This part of our invention is applicable to all tubes for spirit-levels.
D represents a glassA tube having its ends bent at right angles to form arms or legs D' D', as shown, forming one continuous tube. This bent tube is inserted in the stock A, with the ordinary metal frame E in the edge of the stock over the main part D, while in the stock are made apertures G 'G for the arms D to be seen.
The tube D may be provided with an arm or leg, D', at one end only, if so desired.
By this construction we are enabled to form a single or double plumb and `level with but one bulb.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with a glass tube for a spirit-level, an elastic tube, inclosin g the same, and provided withV an opening on top, for the purposes herein set forth. Y
2. In spirit-levels, a bent tube, formed with one or two arms or legs at right angles, for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own We affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
BUEKN. E. BURLINGTON. LEwIs E. PEIEsT.
