This invention relates to a lipstick holder and particularly to an attractive holder into which the lipstick may be withdrawn when not in use.

An object of this invention is to provide a lipstick holder which is sightly in appearance and one into which a lipstick may be f retracted when not in use.

Another object of the invention is to provide a lipstick holder which is sightly in appearance, economical to manufacture and one into which the lipstick may be easily retracted for concealment and projected for use. The amount of projection being easily controlled.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a lipstick holder fashioned from material which is sightly in appearance and which is provided with a slide for holding '20 and withdrawing the lipstick when not 'in use together with means for projecting the lipstick for use when desired.

rlhe illustrated form of lipstick holder comprises a rectangular block 1 of material of any sort whatsoever and which may if desired he opaque or transparent. l

The block 1 is provided with a central cyle indrical here 2 which extends inwardly from lipstick 7 outwardly when the hand wheel 10 the upper end of the block for some distance *Y and with which central bore communicates a smaller central bore 3 and a transverse bore 4 extending inwardly from one side of the holder and communicating with the bore 3.

A shoulder 5 is formed at the lower end of the central bore 2 where the same communicates with the bore 3.

The diameter of the central bore 2 is slightly larger than the diameter of a commercial cylindrical lipstick.

A cup 6 for receiving a lipstick 7 is arranged within the bore 2 for axial movement 1n the same. A spring 8 is interposed between the shoulder 5 and the inner end of the cup 6 for normally urging the cup towards the open end of the holder 1.

The side of the holder 1 adjacent the outer end of the lateral bore 4 is counterbored at 9 to receive a head 10'of a wheel which has a hub 11 extending through the transverse bore d and which is arranged with its inner end within a recess 12 in the holder 1. The wheel 10 and its hub 11 are retained in position by a screw 13 extending through the opposite side of the holder 1 from that having the counterbore 9, the screw passing through a suitable aperture 14 in the holder block 1.

rlhe lower or bottom wall of the cup 6 is apertured at 15 centrally of the cup and a flexible member 16 one end of which is secured within the cup 6 by a pin 17 or similar means extends downwardly through the spring 8 and is attached to the hub 11 of the wheel 10. The iiexible member 16 is wound on the hub 11 as the hand wheel 10 is rotated in one direction for retracting'the cup and its associated lipstick while the spring 8 is effective to move the cup and its associated is turned in the opposite direction.

The inner surface of the hand wheel 10 is provided with a plurality of indentations 18.

The holder member 1 is provided near its lower end with a recess 19 opening into the counterbore 9 and in said recess is placed a spring 20 which urges a ball 21 normally outwardly for engagement with any one of the indentations 18 on the inner surface of the wheel 10 so as to serve as a lock for retaining 109 the wheel in any position to which the same is rotated.

'l`be torln of the invention illustrated in Figures 6 and 7 includes a holder 1 having a central bore 2 extending inwardly from one end of the holder. Another bore 22 is arranged in the opposite end of the holder 1 and preferably is coactive with the bore 2. A partition 23 intervenes between the bores 2 and 22. The partition is provided with a small centrally disposed bore 24 and a lateral bore 25 ending in the outer surface of the holder and within the partition 23. Another aperture 26 is provided in the partition 23.

A wheel 27 closes the lower end of the holder 1 and the bore 22. The wheel 27 is provided with a hub 28 extending upwardly to the bore 22 and is provided with a squared end 29 in which there is an angular recess 30.

A screw plug 31 engages in the lateral bore 25 and has its end within the recess 30 of the squared end of the hub of the wheel 27 The outer end of the plug 31 may be enlarged and provided with threads for engaging the holder 1. A spring 32 is interposed between the squared end 29 of the hub and the head of the plug 31 for securing proper tensioning of the plug 31 with respect to the hub.

A flexible member 33 such as cord or chain has one 'end attached to the lipstick cup 6 and has its other end passed through the aperture 26 in the partition 23 and secured to the hub 28 where it is wound about said hub, as the hand wheel 27 is rotated in a direction to retract the lipstick 7 The wheel 27 of the form ot the invention illustrated in Figure 6 may be locked' in adjusted position by means such as the spring press ball 21 and spring 19 illustrated in Figure 3. Other means may be employed tor this purpose if desired.

The operation of the device is as follows:

The cup 6 is projected towards the open end of the central bore 2 by rotation of the hand wheel 10 in the proper direction whereupon a lipstick 7 is inserted in said cup, and then the wheel is rotated in the opposite direction to withdraw the lipstick so that the upper end of the saine is below the top of the holder 1 such as is shown in Figure 3. This is the normal or inactive position of the lipstick and in this position the holder may be readily placed in a hand bag without soiling the contents of the hand bag and without at the saine time smearing the lipstick on the contents of the bag as well as on the outside of the holder.

W'hen it is desired to use the stick the hand wheel 10 is rotated in a direction to allow the spring 8 to urge the cup and its associated Vstick 7 outwardly until enough of the stick proiects as to be applied to the lips.

The operation ofthe form of the invention illustrated in Figures 6 and 7 is as follows: The spring 8 tends normally to urge the lipstick cup 6 and its stick 7 outwardly being restrained by the pull placed on the {lexible member 33 as the same is wound about the hub 28 of the hand wheel 27. lVhen it is desired to protect the lipstick 7 for use, the hand wheel 27 is rotated in such direction as to unwind the fieXible member 33 about the hub whereupon the spring 8 is effective to urge the lipstick outwardly of the holder 1. The lipstick is attracted by turning the hand wheel 27 in the opposite direction whereupon the flexible member 33 is wound about the hub 28, thus retracting the lipstick the de sired amount.

The plug 31 serves as an additional function of retaining the hand wheel 27 and its associated parts in the lipstick holder.

The term bore as used herein, is not to be limited to a bore which is circular in cross-section, but is used generally, and includes any kind of an opening, be it cylindrical, rectangular or the like, as may be desired in making lipsticks embodying the inl vention herein set forth. The term bore as used in the claims is to be construed with this understanding in mind.

The holder 1 has been shown as square in end plan view but of course the holder may be made in any shape, size and arrangement as desired.

The invention has been described more or less precisely as to details of construction, yet it is to be understood that changes may be made in the arrangement and proportions of parts and that equivalents may be substituted without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention,

The invention is claimed as follows:

1. A lipstick holder including a body having an open ended central bore, a lipstick cup movable within said bore, a hand wheel in said body operable outwardly thereof, iiexible connections between said wheel and said cup for moving said cup, means housed in a wall of the said body for locking said wheel in substantially any position to which the same is rotated.

2. A lipstick holder comprising a body having an open ended central bore, a lipstick cup movable within said bore, a spring tor moving said cup towards the open end of said bore. rotatable means operable eXteriorly of the body for moving the cup in the opposite direction against the action of said spring, and spring-pressed means housed in a wall of said body for locking said last mentioned rotatable means in substantially any` desired position.

3. A lipstick holder including a body having an open ended central bore, a lipstick cup movable within said bore. a spring for moving said cup towards the open end of said bore, a'hand wheel having its axis disposed transversely of said bodv, said wheel having a hub thereon, and a flexible member connected to said cup and to said hub for moving said cup inwardly as said Wheel is rotated in one direction, said spring being effective to move the cup in the opposite direction when said wheel is rotated in the opposite direction, and means for locking the wheel in substantially any desired position.

4. A lipstick holder including a body which is rectangular in end plan, an open lo ended central bore extending part way into said body, a central bore of restricted diameter communicating with said first mentioned bore and extending towards the opposite end of said body, a lateral bore communicating with said last mentioned bore, a hand wheel operable outwardly of said body having a hub extending through said lateral bore with the inner end of said hub supported in a Wall of said body, a lipstick cup movable within said first mentioned bore, a spring interposed between the cup and a shoulder formed by said first and second mentioned bores, and a flexible connection between said cup and said hub for moving said cup in inward direction against the action of said spring, means for locking said wheel in substantially any desired position, said spring being effective to move the cup towards the outer end of said bore when said locking means is freed.
