onirao er titans ALBERT L. NICKERSON, 0F BROCKTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
CONTAINER.
Application filed July 3, 1920.
To all whom it may concern.
' Be it known that I, ALBERT L. NIoKERsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to containers of the class known as collapsible tubes and more particularly to a cap for said container and means for securing said cap to said container.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive cap for a container, the said cap being so constructed and attached to the neck of the container that it may be quickly and easily moved into closed or opened position without accidentally be.- coming detached from said container and 10st.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claim thereof.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a container embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is an elevation as viewed from the ri ht of Fig. 1.
ig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 3-3, Figure 2.
Fig. 4 is an elevation similar to Figure 1 illustrating the cap in its uppermost position.
Fig. 5 is an elevation similar to Figure 4 illustrating the cap in a position to allow the contents of the container to he removed therefrom.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of Figure 4.
Fig. 7 is a plan view of Figure 5.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 1 represents the main body portion of a container preferably a collapsible tube formed of soft metal, although it should be understood-that my invention is capable of bein embodied in other types of containers w ere a suitable neck portion is provided. 2 represents the neck-portion of the container, the said neck portion having grooves 3 upon opposite sides thereof, a portion 4 of said grooves extending longitudinally of the neck portionand each terminating at their lower ends in a helical portion 5 which extends a portion Serial No. 393,879.
of the distance around the circumference of the neck. The upper end of the longitudinal portion 4. of the groove 3 terminates a short distance below the upper end of the neck and the end of said groove constitutes a stop to prevent the removal of a cap 6 from said ears 8 that pins may be provided secured to the said ears without departing from the spirit of this invention. The lower edge of the cap 6 is so cut away at 10 that when the projections 9 are located at the upper ends of the longitudinal portions 4 of the grooves 3 as illustrated in Figure 4:, that the cap 6 may pivot in the upper ends of said grooves and swing to the position illustrated in Figures 5 and 7, at which time the passage 7 is entirely opened and the contents of the container may be removed therefrom in the usual well known manner without danger of losing the cap or without the said cap interfering with the removal of the said contents from the container.
In closing the container the cap is moved to the position illustrated in Figure 4 and then pushed downwardly until the projections 9 reach the bottom of the longitudinal portion 4: of the grooves 3 and the cap is then rotated whereupon the projections 9 will engage the upper edges of the helical portions 5 of the grooves 3 thereby forcing the under surface of the cap 6 tightly against the top of the neck of the container as illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3 thereby tightly closing the passage 7.
Having thus described my invention. what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:
A. container having, in combination, a neck portion provided with grooves formed in the opposite sides thereof and closed at their upper ends said grooves each comprising a portion extending longitudinally of said neck portion and a helical portion exupper ends of the longitudinal portion of 10 said grooves.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my handin presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT L. NICKERSON. Witnesses:
FRANKLIN E. Low, HERMAN R. HOFFMAN.
