Sept. 22, 1931. w. J. FITZPATRICK DI SPLAY DEVICE Filed Jan. 15, 1931 WITNESS ,ffiww Patented Sept. 22, 1931 UNITED STATES PATEN WILLIAM J. rrrzrarnrcx, or cnnannunsnnnw ironx, assrenoa'ron. n..uacir a co., INC., on NEW YORK, n. "2., A conrona rron ornnw YORK DISPLAY DEVICE Application filed January 15, 1981. serial No. 508,931.
This invention relates to a device for displaying piece goods, particularly in stores which cater directly to the public, and has for its object to display piece goods of different styles and patterns in the general form of garments in ofder that the purchaser may judge the appearance of a garment when made from such piece goods.
In the drawings, Fig. 1, is a front view of a section of piece goods folded and hung from a hanger; Fig. 2 is a back view thereof; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a case in which a number of sections of piece goods are displayed; Fig. 5 illustrates the method of folding the piece goods to form a collar; Fig. 6 is a diagrammatic section on lines 6-6 of Fig. 5.
A sample of each material, which is offered for sale, is severed from each bolt. Such samples are cut in the full width of the material (e. g. 54 inches) and about a yard long. Each sample of fabric illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, is intended to have substantially these dimensions. The fabric is folded inwardly upon itself along one side of its width for about five inches to form the fold 2. The fold 2 is turned backwardly upon itself to form the fold 3, thereby producing the collar efiect 4. The section of material thus folded is then placed over a coat hanger, which consists of the usual wooden main member 5, having a thin bar 6 extending from one side to the other side of the main member 5, which main member is provided with a hook 7. The material after being thus hung is secured to the hanger by folding the material at 8 around the bar 6 and passing a single pin 9 through the folds 10 and 11 at approximately the ends of the reverse folds 3 at both ends of the collar 4. The material from the points of attachment by the pins 9 falls downwardly, to simulate the front 12, sleeves 13 and back 14 of a garment. The front of the folded fabric by reason of the amount of material taken into the collar 4 is shorter than the rear thereof, thus exposin the material of the back.
The draped material is secured to the hang- 50 er by the two pins 9 and it is not necessary that any additional means be employedfor securing-the garment thereon. The collar 4 is also retained in its folded shape by the said pins and the draping of the material into coat formation and retaining it in such formation is also insured by such fastening means. The material is preferably given its coat like effect without the use of any shaping means other than the manner of folding it and the use of a coat hanger as a supporting member.
A large number of these hangings are prepared, one of each particular type of material which is being ofiered for sale, and displayed in a case 15. The display case 15 comprises the base 16, the bottom 17, the upright walls 18 and the top 19. Bars 20 extend across the inside of the case 15 from each wall 18 to the center support 21. Suitable receptacles or pockets 22 are provided on the underside of the top 19 for the reception of sales books and samples of the materials. Both sides of the case 15 are open in order that the displayed materials will be accessible to the customer as well as to the clerk who is in attendance. The purchasing public will have exhibited directly before it, by the use of this invention, a large number of various types of material arranged side by side. The customer may thereby compare such materials and by reason of the manner in which they are draped upon the hangers may readily form an opinion with respect to the appearance of garments made from such materials.
I claim:
1. A piece goods display device compris-, ing a coat hanger of the type having a bar extending across the lower portion of the coat hanger and secured to the sides thereof, a section of piece goods upon said hanger sub- .90 stantially larger than said hanger, said section of piece goods being folded upon itself along one edge, said folded portion being reversely folded to form a collar, said collar passing across the back of said hanger, thence e95 over the front edges of said hanger, then folded around said bar so as to embrace the same and having portions engaging each other and pinned'together, the fabric below the said bar being allowed to freely drape. w
2. A piece goods display device comprising a coat hanger of the type having a bar extending across the lower portion and secured to the sides thereof, a section of piece 5 goods upon said hanger substantially larger than the hanger, said section of piece goods being folded along one edge to collar formation, said folded portion passing across the ,7 back of said hanger thence over the front 10 edges of said hanger, then folded around said bar so as to embrace thesame and-having portions engaging each other and secured tov gether, the fabric below said bar being allowed to freely drape.
