PATENT OFFICE GM PUNCH COVER Application nled January 14, 1930. Serial No. 429,?61.
This invention has reference to a combined can punch and cover especially designed for use in connection with cans containing milk, the construction of the device being such that the cover will be supported on the can until vthe contents of the can have been exhausted.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device ci fthi: character rwilicil will revent ciogging o t e openings w ic m havebeen punched in the can, to the end that the contents oi the can may be readily poured from the openin A further obyect of the invention is to provide a can cover having prongs to punch :5 openings in the end of the can on which the cover is positioned, means being provided for exerting a pressure on the cover to force the prongs into the can, the pressure exerting means acting as a handle for swinging the 2o cover to its active or inactive position.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment o the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view through a can cover constructed in accordance with the invention, the same being shown as positioned over a can.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Figure 1, the can having been removed.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through a modified form of cover.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view through a further modified form of cover.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the device comprises a cylindrical body portion indicated generally by the reference character 5,'the ends of the body portion being open so that the body portion may be readily positioned over a can.
Sprin fingers indicated at 6 extend inwardly rom the body portion and rictionalw ly contact with the can over which the body portion is positioned, to hold the can within the body portion.
Extendlng inwardly from the upper end of the body portion, is an arm 7 to which the u link 8 is pivotally connected, the link 8 being also pivotally connected to the cover 9 to the end that the cover may swing upwardly and rearwardly to a position as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1, allowing the material or G0 contents of the can, to be poured from the opening in the can cover. The cover is circular in formation and provided with a circumferential iiange 10 to t down over the upper end of the body portion to cover the can sup e5 ported therein.
Prongs 11 extend downwardly from the cover 9, and are disposed in such positions that when pressure is directed to the cover, the prongs will pierce the end of the can, po- 7o sitioned in the body portion, and provide openings to permit the pouring of the contents from the can. u Y
A handle indicated at 12 is secured to the cover and may be gripped by the operator to 7i operate the cover to raise or lower the cover.
In the form of the invention as illustrated by Figure 3 of the drawings, the body portion is indicated by the reference character 15,
and is 'formed with depressions in the side 80` vvide a pouring opening, so that when the cover isI moved to a position as shown in dotted lines, the contents of the can may be l poured through the opening.
The handle is'indicated by the reference character 20 and includes an arm 21 pivotally connected with the cover 17 at 22 the forward end of the arm 21 being free and located with such respect to the end of the can, that the inner end of the arm will contact with the end of the can upon upward movement of the handle, forcing the cover away from the end of the can.
Piercin prongs 23 extend from the cover and are a apted to punchholes in the end of the can, when the cover is forced downwardly onto the can.
In the form of the invention as shown by Figure 4, the body portion includes a circular flanged base 24 in which the can to be sup orted by the device is positioned. Exten ing upwardly from the base, is an arm 25 which isl slightly curved to conform to glie shape of the can positioned on the base t the upper end of the arm 25, are curved -arms 26 that have their outer ends curved sli htly outwardly at 27 to permit the arms to readily positioned around the upper `end of a can.
The cover which is indicated by the refer- 'ence character 28, is hingedly connected to 'body the arm 25 at 29, and is A provided with prongs 30 adapted to be forced into the end of the can held in the body portion, to pierce the end of the can and provide openings.
Pivotally connected to the cover 28, is an arm 31 to which the handlev 32 is connected, the arm 31 being of a length so that it will extend beyond the cover, to the end that when the handle 32 is pressed downwardly, the cover will be swun to the position as shown .in dotted lines, lowin the contents of the can to be poured there rom.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, a can containing milk may be positioned in the body portion and the cover forced downwardl punching holes in the cover to allow t e. contents of the can to be poured therefrom. It will further be seen that after the pouring operation, the cover will act to -close the end ofthe body portion and the prongs will enter the openings to clean the openings and prevent the material from clogging the openings.

1. A can holder comprising a body por-l tion, a cover at one end of the body portion, prongs extending from the cover and adapted to pierce the end of the can held in the ortion, said cover having'a circumferential flange formed with an opening to permit material to be poured from the can, and a handle connected with the cover for operating the cover.
