Description
- L. GRUNDHAND ET AL CAN HOLDER AND OPENER Filed Oct. 5. 3.921
I am /ms: W4? *w Patented Nov. 13, 1923.
STATES LOUIS GRUNDHAND AND OTTO ISELI,
OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH.
CAN HOLDER AND OPENER.
Application filed October 3, 1921.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, LoUIs GRUNDHAND and Or'ro Isnm, citizens of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can Holders and Openers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
Our invention relates to new and useful improvements in can holders and openers.
The principal object of this invention is the provision of a holder and opener for cans of condensed milk, cream, and the like, which is sanitary and may be easily and cheaply stamped from sheet metaL.
Another object resides in the provision of a can opener carrying a spout whereby the contents of the can may be poured after an opening is formed in the can, the spout being provided with a thin cover adapted to automatically open when the can is tilted and which will automatically close when'the can is returned to an upright position.
A further object consists in providing a holder in which the can may be readily positioned or removed, the said holder having a handle whereby it may be carried from place to place.
A still further object resides in providing a holder for receiving a can and an opener connected to the holder for pivotal and sliding movements, the opener being slid transversely across the can for simultaneously making a plurality of openings in the can.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, our invention consists of the details of construction and arrangement of parts, described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and while we have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of our invention, it will be understood that such changes may be made as will fall within the scope of the ap ended'claims.
n the drawings Fig. 1 is a perspective view of our invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation disclosing a can in position and the bar and associated parts in section, and
Fig. 3 is a top plan view.
Referring to the drawings, 4 indicates a can containing condensed milk, cream, or the Serial No. 505,153.
like, which is supported upon a base 5 and held in position thereon by vertically extended lugs 6. As a further means for holding the can against accidental displacement, there is provided a plurality of curved spring arms 7 extending horizontally from a rear supporting member 8, formed inte rally with or secured to the base in any sultable manner. These arms engage the can adjacent its ends and partially encircle the same, allowing a sufficient entrance for the reception of the can. Ears 9 are likewise carried by the supporting member 8 and are for the purpose of pivotally connecting a camming lever 10 to the holder. This lever, which is formed from sheet metal or the like, is constructed with side members 11, provided with suitable apertures for the reception of pivot pins 12, and a thumb piece which when swung downwardly assumes a normal position adjacent a handle 12. On moving our improved holder and opener from place to place the handle and thumb piece are simultaneously grasped which prevents accidental displacement of the lever and associated parts to be described. camming lever and adapted to extend across the top of the can, is an arm 13 provided at its forward end with a downwardly directed extension 14 to which are secured the spout 15 and piercing blade 16. A cover 17 is connected tothe spout so as to swing over the same to prevent its contents from drying and exclude insects or the like. As a means for preventin an leakage occurring at the point where the piercing blade 16 enters the can, there is rovided a gasket 18 which bears against tiie inner side of the extension 14 and the outer Wall of the can. In order that the contents of the can may fiow freely therefrom,we have stamped from the arm 13 a vent piercing point 19, which is directed downwardly and rearwardly.
From the following description and drawing it will be readily noted that when placing a can within the holder and positioning the arm 13 across the top thereof, it is only necessary to put slight pressure upon the arm and press downwardly on the caminin I lever 10 to cause the piercing blade 16 to enter the can. This provides an oulet for the contents of the same, and causes piercing point 19 to enter and. rip a vent opening in the top of the can.
It will also be noted that the several parts Connected to the forming our improved holder and opener may be stamped from sheet metal and bent to roperform.
aving described our invention, What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 4 1. A device of the character describe comprising a base, a support secured to the base, a handle, a lever pivoted to said support, an arm pivoted to the lever and adapted to be positioned across the can, said arm being provided with pouring means and a downwardly and re arwardly directed. vent ripping point, said pouring means and the ripping point being adapted to puncture the can upon movement of the lever.
2. A device of the character described comprising a base adapted to receive a receptacle, a support extending from the base, a lever pivotally connected to the support,
an arm pivotally connected at one end to the lever for vertical-swinging movement and transverse sliding movement with re spect to the receptacle, a pouring spout connected to the opposite end of the arm, a erforating member extending inwardly o the spout and communicating therewith, and a downwardly and rearwardly extending ripping point formed. intermediate the ends of the arm, said ripping point moving transversely of the receptacle upon movement of the lever to slide the arm.
In testimony whereof we hereunto aflix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
