Description

Sept. l5, 1931. F. E. SWANSTROM GARMENT FAS TENER Filed Feb. 9, 1931 Patented Sept. 1,5, 193.1-
FRANCES E. sWANsTRoM,
or DU'LUTH, MINNESOTA GARMENT FASTENER Application filed February 9,41931. '-Serial No. 514,521.
This invention yrelates to garment fasteners i and has special reference to such a device comprising a pendant portion attached toa part of thev garment and having an arrow head-like free end for engagement within a slot or buttonhole structure inthe other portion of the garment.
The principal object isto produce a praci tical and easily adjusted pendant of this type.
Another object is to produce such a fastener `that readily passes through a wringer during the process of washing or the like -without damage either to the machine operating vupon same or the fastener itself.
l'Other objects and advantages of the peculiar construction willv appear-in the followlike parts:
` ing description thereof.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, and wherein like reference characters indicate Figure 1 is a perspective View of the core of the fastener; and Figure 2 is a perspective view of the ultimately completed fastener -attached to the garment having portions ofV same broken away for convenience in illustration.
' 1 represents the core of the fastener which is preferably composed of some suitable comparatively non-yieldable metal, such as sheet metal or composition material, and if of sheet metal must be either galvanized or otherwise rust proof so as not to become damaged or i subject to deterioration by virtue of the washing process.
The ones already 1n use are prlncipallyof galvanized iron and have proved to function admirably.
This core is preferably of substantially triangular shape, in length approximately three times itslgreatest Width, with the two opposed corners somewhat rounded for ap-` pearance aswell as convenience in passing same throughl a buttonhole, and is provided adjacent and parallel its longest side with an elongated holeor slot, illustrated at 2, it
being materially less in length than that of,
. the core; this being for the reception of the strap like strip ofcloth 3, preferably .likened to the cloth of which the garment 1s comshaped covering indicated at 6 of the `same material astha't of which the garment is composed,'and the lining as well as the outer cover with the arrowhead shaped extremity of the fastener are stitched ,directly through the two thicknesses-,of the connecting strap 3, as indicated at 7. The twoportions of the strap 3 are preferably unattaohed intermediate of the head of the pendant and the garment, but firmly united transversely in the garment adjacent the outer edge thereof as at 8, and also along acourse running diagonally' therefrom towards rthe center of the inner terminus of the strap, thus making a practic'al and serviceable pendant attachment for the garment; it being understood that the arrow shaped head is designed to be slipped through a buttonhole like aperture as indicated at 9 in an adjoining or cooperating portion of the' garment; the double feature of the strap functioning vat all times to support the buckle in an upright and iieX- ible position as well as tending to hold theA buckle in its flat parallel position with the garment when passing through a wringer .or-
Having thus described my invent-ion, what Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: l
1. A triangularly shaped garment fastener comprising a rigid core member having `a through slot adjacent one straight'edge tially three cornered member, further characterized by having an elongated slot pary allel with and adjacent said major side, a
strap passing through said slot, folded back upon itself, and attached to the garment, and a covering for said core and strap connection.
` 3. A triangularly shaped garment fastener for, cooperative engagement with a buttonhole comprising a relatively thin rigid member' being Ain length approximately three times its greatest Width and having a slot adjacent its longest side, said slot being materially less in length than that of the 'fastener, and a strap extending through said slot, folded back upon itself, and attached to the garment, the ends of the fastener extending upon either side of the strap overlapping the edges of the buttonhole when engaged therein.
lin testimony whereof I ax my signature.
