Description

g- 4, 1931- E. c. SLOAN 1,817,852
DISPLAY BOX FOR WATCHES Filed Sept. ll 1930 a; due to the universal hinge connection.
Patented Aug. 4, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE EDWARD O. SLOAN, OF GENEVA, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO ELGIN NATIONAL WATCH COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS DISPLAY BOX FOR WATCHES Application filed September 11, 1930. Serial No. 481,263.
i two-part box or case as may be desired.
The invention will be first described and then set forth in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. 1 is a top plan of my improved display box;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 66 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation;
Fig. 4 is a similar view with the parts in a different position, and
Fig. 5 is a detail fragmentary View to show the universal or swivel hinge construction.
My display case is formed of the two oblong dished members 1 and 2, the display member 2 having an oblong pad holding recess 7 adapted to receive a pad, not shown. These sides and ends of the dish-shaped members 1 and 2 are beveled in opposite directions as in Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, and are hinged w or connected by means of a universal connection to permit more than one display adjustment. That is to say, the display member 2, may not only be swung into the inclined position shown in Fig. 3, but may also be adjusted to the lower display position shown in Fig. 4: as may be most advantageous by simply swinging the display member 2 up, then turning it bodily around and then lowering it to the position shown in Fig. 4. This is This universal or swivel connection is formed by two hinge-eyes 10, upturned from the end of box member 1 in which is mounted to turn the ends of the pintle 12. The end of the display member 2 is connected to this pintle 12 by means of the transverse swivel pin 13 mounted at its headed opposite end to turn in the thickened end 14: of the display member 2. These tray shaped members 1 and 2 are formed of a suitable composition pressed or molded into shape with pin 13 inserted therein. WVhen closed the members form an enclosing box or case and when opened as in Figs. 3 and 4 they form a display box or case. In order that the member 2 maybe held against lateral turning movement when adjusted as in Fig. 3, its hinged end is provided on its outer beveled portion with an inclined rib 17 adapted to enter an inclined recess 16, in the member 1. It is thought that the in vention will be fully understood from the foregoing description. The two members 1 and 2 may be hinged together at their longer sides instead of at their shorter sides or ends, so that it will be understood that the words hinged at their ends will include ends or sides.
What I claim is:
1. A display box or case comprising two tray shaped members having oppositely beveled or inclined outer ends and a universal hinged connection therefor at two adjacent points to permit of one oil said members to be adjusted in two display positions.
2. A display box or case comprising two tray shaped members having oppositely beveled or inclined ends, one of said members having a transverse pintle at its beveled end and provided with a swivel pin connecting said pintle with the beveled end of the other member.
3. A display box or case comprising two tray shaped members having oppositely beveled or inclined outer ends universally hinged to swing apart until the bevels contact and an interengaging recess and rib on the respective ends to engage and prevent lateral movement when the members are so adjusted.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
ED'WARD C. SLOAN.
