Description

UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
WILLIS WILKINSON, OF CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALE-TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,385, dated August 22, 1876; application filed July 11, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIS WILKINSON, of Charleston, in the county of Charleston and State of South Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bale-Tie, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved bale-tie, shown as applied to a band. Fig. 2 is a section of the same, taken through the line w :0, Fig.1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention isto furnish wire is bent three times at right angles, which brings it to the form of a rectangle, with its ends crossing each other at right angles. One
'of the ends is bent into hook form, and the other is left straight. The arm with the straight end is bent or inclined inward, so that it willcross the arm with the hook end at a little distance from said hook. B is the band, one end of which is looped around the arm of the tie, opposite the straight arm, and is secured by rivets. Upon the other. end of the band B is formed a loop, which, in tying the bale, is slipped upon the straight arm of said tie. With this construction, when the strain comes upon the band B, the straight arm of the tie A is drawn back into the hook of the adjacent arm, by which it is firmly supported. The tie A, thus constructed and applied, enables the bale to be quickly and easily tied, and holds the band securely.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A baletie consisting of the quadrangular metal A, having one free end straight, and
subjacently crossing the other, while the latter is provided with a hook at its end, substan'tiallyas and for the purpose specified.
WILLIS WILKINSON.
