HAIR WAVER Filed April 5. 1929 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented May1i9,'193l UNITED STATES AT NT pm ELLA M.Anaras-ornEwYon -mx HAIR w wm? Application filed April 5,
This invention relates to a permanent Marcel waving member and particularly to a member adapted to have strands or looks of hair laced or intertwined back-and forth upon one side and engaged within indent-ations formed along opposite side edges,
The general object of my invention is to provide a simple and practical form of permanent marcel waving member which will 19 hold the strand of-hair which is looped there'- on while bein baked without unduly,
stretching the sai ne.
invention can be otherwise embodied and that f the drawing is not to be construed as defining or limiting the-"scope of theinvention 'the claims appended to this specification being relied upon for that purpose.
The figure of the drawing shows a perspec-:
tive view of a Marcel waving member in accordance with the present invention and having hair positioned thereon preparatory to being inserted in theheating tube. Q
In the above mentioned drawing I have shown but one embodiment of the invention which is now deemed preferable, but it 1s to be understood that changes and modifica; tions may be madewithin the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit ofthe invention.
Referring more in detail tothe figure of the drawing I provide a thin plate 10 made of sheet metal or other material that may be readily shaped and maintained permanent in its predetermined shape. This plate 10 terials, preferably non-inflammable, may also be employed. The plate or sheet 10 may 5 be laterally curved slightly and uniformly may conveniently be madeby stamping or. cutting it from sheet metal, but other -ma-" throughout its length; Extending from the 1929; Serial o. 352,v27. I
opposite sides of th'eplate 10 area plurality of wedge shaped projections 1314: which form a series of V-shaped notches 11 between adjacent projections. The projections 13, I
which Ishall call the hair loop compressing projections,- are preferably wider than the projections 14 which I shall call the hair loop supportingprojections.' The projections 13 I alternate with "the projections'lt on eachside w oft-he plate 10. The projections on opposite sides of the plate are preferably appro xi mately opposite eachother. A strand of hair l2is looped around the projections 14. The function ofithe projections 13 is-to cooperate. with the proje'ctions'l so as to grip; and compress the strand of hair between'the projections 13 14 The use of theextra projections 13-inake'sit possibleto' retainfthe hair on the plate without; stretching the hair" or destroying the fluffiness of theparts of the strand that liefon the face of-the plate.
- Betweenthe indentations on opposite sides a relatively wide; smooth, and if'desired a slightly curved surface is presented over which portions of the strand or look of hair 12' extends. The strands, of I hair- .12' being .wavedf or1mar'c'elled, except when passing 'ai'oundthe fprQlctions l lbetween the indentations 11, remain upon one side only of the PlatelO, The lock of hair 12 when removed from the plate 10, will therefore'fhe substantially flat and have a number of" undulations simulating- Marcel? waves".. 7
In operation the hair .12 being curled or 'marcelled; is combed or br ushed out and fa small-amount orjl'ock 12 is wrappeldback and forth betweeniopposite sides as indicated in;
the, figure and'intertwined about. the pro-'.
jectiens 'l lgon the side'fedges of the plate 10.
A large numheryo'f these plates 10 are em-' ployed in'waving the hair and'the strands of hair 1 12 are positioned thereon while thehair is suitably moistened with any usual prep mf tion used with the waving operation. When the hair in individual 1ocks12 has been suite ably wrapped upon a pluralityof these plates 10 the individual plates 10 are inserted within electric heating cups or tubes'which may preferabl'y haveelongated narrow openings within Whichtheseplates are inserted. When the hair has been suitably heated the cups or tubes are removed and the hair taken from the plates 10 after which the undulations are slightly brushed out to give the hair a uniform Marcel effect.
In positioning the hair 12 upon the plate 10 it is maintained upon one side of the plate I 10, being looped around projections 14 on opposite sides of the plate and being engaged and held between the projections 13 and 14. This gives the hair 12, when removed from the plate 10, a fiat Marcel wave effect with small and closely adjacent undulations which are adapted to lie closely against the scalp. The plate 10 over which the hair 12 is positioned is entirely sanitary and may be easily sterilized by boiling or washing in the usual manner.
I claim:
1. In a hair waving device, a plate having a plurality of hair loop supporting and hair loop compressing projections defining a plurality of V-notches extending inwardly from the opposite sides thereof, said notches being adapted to receive a strand of hair looped over every second projection between said notches the alternate projections being adapt-- ed to compress and hold the curved portions of the strand without subjecting the intermediate portions thereof to substantial tension or destroying the flufiiness of such intermediate portions;
2. In a hair waving device, a plate having a plurality of Wedge shaped projections extending from the opposite sides thereof and forming V-shaped notches between adjacent projections, said projections forming alternatmg hair loop supporting and hair loop compressing projections.
3. In a hair waving device, a plate having a plurality of wedge shaped projections extending from the opposite sides thereof, said projections notches between adjacent projections, the protions on the opposite sides of said plate ing approximately opposite each other, said projections being adapted to frictionally grip and compress a strand of hair when said strand is looped from side to side vof said plate around alternate projections;
4. In a hair wavingdevice, a plate having a plurality of wedge shaped projections extending fromthe opposite sides thereof and forming V-shaped notches between adjacent projections, the projections on each side of said plate being alternately broad and narrow. i
