This invention relates to improvements in window fastener, and is especially related to a fastener adapted to be connected to the lower rail of an upper window sash and which is provided with a sliding part which may be pulled Yout -to project. above the upper rail ofthe lower .window sash to prevent the raising of the v latter.
The main object `of the invention is to provide-a window `fastener ofthe character described, which will be composed of few and simple parts, whichv may be readily and easily manufactured and assembled at a low cost and which will be simple in operation and highly elicient in carrying'outthe purposes for which it is designed. ,Y
Another object ofthe invention is to provide a window vfastener of the character described, comprising a single unitary structure which may be fastened to the upper Y window sash and which has a sliding part connected therewith adapted tobe projected above the lower window sash and prevent the raising of the same, said sliding part being adapted also for withdrawal whereby the lower sash may be readily lowered or raised without interfering with said fastener. With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description #o proceeds, the invention' consists in certain v the locking screw ma novel features of construction, arrangements, and combination of parts', hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details ofthe structure .may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
.Stated generally, the invention comprises `a substantially inverted U-shaped member having a pair of horizontally disposed flanges by means of which -it may be perma-` nently and rigidly secured to the lower rail of ther upper sash of a window casing. Slidably mounted on said inverted U-shaped member, for transverse movement thereon, is asecond member which is provided with an intermediate vertically disposed central portion and a lower vrearwardly extending flange which is substantially parallel to the top Vportions of said inverted U-shaped members. Said second member is adapted to slide on said iirst member and in any desired adjusted position by means of a screw having a head at each end thereof, said screw being threaded through a threaded opening in said first member and passing through an elongated slot provided in said secondmember, the lower head of said screw engaging the. rearwardly extending flange of said second member for locking the two members in their desired adjusted position. When it is desired to lock the lower window sash, the screw may be loosenedand the upper member of said fastener pulled out to project above the upper rail of said lower sash, said fixture may then be locked in said positionV by the actuation of the screw. When it is desired to raise the lower sash be loosened and the sliding member move back where it will be out of the way, permitting the raising vof the said lower sash. f
For the purpose of facilitating an understanding of my invention I have illustrated in theV accompanying drawings, a preferred embodiment thereof, from an inspection of which, when considered in connection with may be locked Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a window fastener embodying the invention.

Referring to the drawings more speciiically by characters of reference, the letter A designates the upper sash of a window casing, Athe letter B the lower rail of said upper sash, the letter C designates the lower sash of said casing having the upper rail D.
The improved fastener comprises a lower member generally designated by the reference character 10, said member having the central part thereof bent to provide an inverted U-shaped portion 12 and the horizontally disposed flanges or ears 11 provided with openings 13 through which are adapted to extend suitable fastening means 14 such as screws or the like, by means of which the said member may be attached to the lower rail B of the upper sash A of the window casing. The said member is of a suitable width and size to readily adapt it for attachment to the lower rail of the upper sash.
The second member, generally designated by the reference character 15, is adapted to be mounted on the member 10 for transverse sliding movement thereon. Said second member comprises a substantially inverted U-shaped portion 16 having the depending sides 17, which portion is adapted to fit over the center portion 12 of the member 10 and to slide thereon. The forward ends of said sides 17 are bent rearwardly at right angles to the sides 17 to form the ears or side flanges 18, and the top portion 16 of said member is bent downwardly to form the substantially vertically disposed face 20 the lower portion of which face is bent rearwardly at right angles to said vertically disposed portion to form the inwardly extending flange 19, which is disposed substantially parallel to the top face 16 of said inverted U-shaped member.
The lower member 10 and the sliding member 15 are assembled so that the inverted U-shaped portion 16 of said sliding member lits over the central portion 12 of the lower member and the inwardly eXtended flange 19 is received between the sides of said central portion 12. The said members 10 and 15 are secured together by means of a screw 21 threaded through a suitably threaded opening 211 provided therefor on the top of the central portion 12, said screw extending through an elongated transverse slot provided in the portion 16, said screw having at the upper end thereof a knurled head 22 by means of which it may be actuated and a lower head 23 rigidly secured thereto and adapted for engaging the upper face of the inwardly extending flange 19. By rotating the screw 21 it will be noted that the members 10 and 15 may be securely locked in any desired adjusted position.
In operation the parts 10 and 15 may be assembled and distributed as a single unitary structure obviating the danger of these parts becoming disassembled or lost. The member 10 is secured to the lower rail of the upper sash of the window casing and may be permanently fixed thereto. By loosening the screw 21 the upper member 15 may be pulled out to project above the lower sash to prevent the raising of the same, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1, the part 15 being locked in said projected position by the screw 2-1, the lower head 23 of which engages the inwardly extended flange 19. When the part 15 is pulled backward to its fully withdrawn position the lower sash may be raised or lowered without interference from said fastener. It will also be noted that the fastener is secured only to the upper sash, there being no parts connected to or with the lower sash, thereby permitting the raising of the lower sash to the uppermost portion of the window casing.
It will also be noted that the parts 10 and 15 which make up the window fastener may be made or formed out of a single piece of suitable material, said parts being bent to the desired shapes in a minimum number of operations thereby resulting in a consid erable reduction in cost over the window fasteners heretofore used.
It is believed that my invention, its mode of construction, and many of its advantages, should be readily understood from the foregoing, without further description, and should also be manifest that while a preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described for illustrative purposes, the structural details are, nevertheless, capable of wide variation within the purview of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A window fastening comprising a plate having the central portion thereof bent to form an inverted U-shaped section, said plate being adapted to be securedl to the upper sash of a window, a member mounted on said inverted U-shaped section and adapted to slide thereon, said member being adapted to be pulled out to project over the lower sash to prevent the raising thereof, and means for locking said member to said plate, said last mentioned means comprising a screw extending through the top wall of said inverted U-shaped section and passing through an elongated slot provided inthe member mounted on said U-shaped section.
2.l A window fastening comprising aplate having an inverted U-shaped central portion, said plate being adapted to be secured to the upper sash of a window, a member sldably mounted on said inverted U-shaped section and being adapted to be pulled out to project over the lower sash for preventing the raising of the same, an inwardly, horizontally disposed flange formed integral with said member adapted for engagement by a locking means for securely locking said member to said plate, saidlocking means comprising a screw threaded through said plate and passing through an elongated slot provided in said member, whereby the said member may be locked to the said plate in any desired adjusted position.
3. A window fastening comprising a plate provided with an inverted U-shaped central portion, said plate being adapted to be secured to the lower rail of the upper sash of a window casing, a member having a portion thereof of inverted U-shaped formation adapted to t over and slide on said central portion of said plate, an inwardly horizontally disposed flange provided on said member, said flange being connected with said inverted U-shaped portion by a vertically' disposed portion, a screw extending through the top of said inverted U-shaped central portion of the plate, said screw passing through an elongated slot provided in the inverted U-shaped portion of the member, and being adapted for engaging the said inwardly extending flange, whereby the said sliding member may be locked to the said plate in any desired adjustedposition.
