Description

Det. 6, 1932. A, J, GRAF 1,890,288
SNAP. GUN
Filed July 30. 1931 w/ TNA-13555 Patented Dec. 6, 1932 UNITED STATES P'ATENTy dcnil-clefj7 ARTHUR J. GRAF, OF FOND DU LAC, WISCONSIN (i ,sNAP GUN Application ledJ'uly 30,
This `invention has for its object to provide a snap gun or toy pistol capable of producing a loud report when brought from the vertical position to a horizontal position as upon bringing the gun into action.
An object of the invention is to make a sounding toy of this type capable of producing a loud sharp report of a vbrilliancy and volume dependent upon the speed of travel andthe abruptness of the stop, involving a certain degree of skill readily acquired by use in the hands of the small boy.
Another object of the inventionV is to so simplify the constructionV that the device may be manufactured and sold at a very low price. Y
With the abo-ve and other objects in view the invention consists in the snap gun as herein claimed and all equivalents. y
Referring to the accompanying' drawing,
` in which like characters of reference indi- Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view` through the barrel and the tongue member, and
Figs. 4 and 5 are views showing the position of the arm and gun preliminary to. and at the time of making the report.
In the drawing, 10 indicates the Vgun-f shaped member, preferably of wood but capable of being made of other. suitable materials, and forming a hand grip 11 and barrel portion 12, the latter having` a fiat top containing a cavity 13, which may conveniently consist of a saw kerf made by a circular saw.
Secured to the top of the barrel, preferably to the rea-r projection incident to the imitation of the Luger type pistol, as by means of a pair of tacks 14. is a flexible tongue member 15 capable of position flat against the flat top` of the'barrel 12 to close the cavity 13. This tongue member 15 may be made of heavy sole leather or'rubber or 1(93'1. s'riilna 553,936.
-thje desired fleXibility, weigli t*and stiifn'ess tocause it to freely swing away from the barrel during a swift movement thereofand quickly assume a -fiat position'against the flat top of the barrel to completely close 'the'cav-" ity upon a sudden V`cessationpf such'move- In order to afford the necessary" flexibility Y in a materialhaving the vrecluisite stiifness,;i,..- 1t 1s `preferably provided vwith a deep score 16 extending across it `,near the't'acks 14, and such score, being on top of-the tongue memb'er and, of`a V-shape in cross-section toproduce shoulders 17 spaced apart,l ynotl only gives flexibility by reducing thethickness of thetongue imember-at this point, but serves as a stop for limiting the Vswinging movementof the tongue by the abutment of said shoulders.
With the snap gun of thisinvention held in the hand as a pistol a swift movement followed by a sudden stop causes the fiexiblev tongue member to iirst follow behind therbarrel, as shown in Fig. 4, andthen to clap down upon the Hat top of the barrel to produce a loud sharp report resembling an explosion and giving the effect of a pistol disv charge, making it realistic `and attractive,
particularly as the skill acquired with prac-i tice gives greater eiiciency with correspondi ing satisfaction to the youthful'iuser.
What I claim 'as new and desire to secure by Letterslatent .is
1.` A `snap gun comprising a body shaped to resemble a. pistol and having a barrel with at iiat top containing a cavity, and a flexible y tongue member secured to' the rear end of the flat top and adapted to lie flat thereagainst and having a hinge-like portion on which it may swing away therefrom while the gun is in motion for producing a. loud report by swinging down against the fiat top to quickly close the cavity thereof-when the` gun is broughtv toa quick stop.
2. A snap gun comprising a body member having parallel side faces as cut from a boardin the shape of a pistol with a barrel having a flat top containing a cavity, and a leXible Vrear end thereof and adapted t0 lie iat thereon over the cavity and provided with va hingelike portion on which it is capable of swinging away from the barrel during quick movement of the gun with the barrel in advance for producing a loud report upon suddenly stopping such movement when vthe eXible Y tongue cla-ps against .said flat topl covering the cavity. Y Y f Y 3. A snap gun comprising a body member having a hand grip and a flat surfaced projection, there being a cavity in the flat sury face, and a ieXible tongue member securedH at its end to the end of the flatsurface and adapted to fit closelyragainst such surface to t. cover the cavity ,and having a hinge-like portion between the pointvof attachment and the cavity, said flexible-tongue` member being transversely scored nearthe end to which it l is attached to localize and limit the hinge action thereof. Y n L Y Avsnaphgun.comprisinga wooden body shaped to resemble a pistol with abarrel having a iat top Ycontaining Y a cavity, and a 'flexible tongue of sole leather Vtacked at its rear end to the rear end of the barrel and lyj ing fiat upon the flat surfaceV oit"v the lbarrel and covering the cavity, said eXible tongue being scored acrossits ytop surface near the "T3-0 attached end.
In testimony whereof I aiixmy* signature.
