l made of a plurality of separable sections, vand having improved means for interconnecting said sections, the meeting edges of said sections being so constructed as to prevent damage to the table top by accidental spillage of liquids on the pad, or the like causes.`

Another object of this invention is to provide a table pad of the character described and made of separable sections joined together at the meeting edges, having means for positively preventing accidental separation of said portions, said means being further adapted to retain the pad sections in alignment, and to be normally hidden from view. y

A further object of this invention is to provide a neat, compact and durable table pad of the character described, which shall comprise comparatively few and simple parts, be easy to manipulate for connecting and dis- 5 connecting the pad sections, which shall have means for effectively preventing liquids from passing through the meeting edges of the pad sections, which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and withal practical and efficient to a high degree.

Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction,y combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of'which the scope of applicationwill be indicated in thefollowing claims.

Referring now in detail to the drawing, 10 designates a pad embodying the invention, here shown for the `purposel of illustration, in the form of a table pad, comprising a pair of complementary sections 11 and 12, it be- 5 5 ing understood thatV my improved pad may lcomprise any suitable number of sections joined together in the manner hereinafter described. The sections are made of a plurality of plies of material. Thus section 11 may 70 be made of a lower ply 13 and an Lipper ply 14, and the section 12 of a lower ply 15 and 4an upper ply 16. The lower ply 13 may be made of any suitable heat insulating or other protective material such as asbestos composition, and the lower surfaces and side edges thereof are preferably covered with a sheet 18 of iiannel or the like soft material for protecting the surface of the table top or other furniture on which the pad is placed. The 80 upper ply 14 may likewise be made of heat insulating or the like material, and is preferably covered on the upper surface and side edges' thereof with a sheet19 of paper or any other suitable covering or coating material. i

The sheets or coverings 18 and 19 are preferably pasted to said plies 513 and 14 and the inner ends 18al and 19a are folded over the inner surfaces 20 and 21 of said plies, as will hereinafter appear. The inner surfaces 2O 90 and 21 of the plies 13 and 14 are pasted to each other with any suitable adhesive material, except at the corners of the section 11 adjacent the edge 23 of said ply 13, thus forming slots 22 in said corners between said 95 Jlies. l

l. The plies 13 and 14 are preferably further provided in each corner thereof with a transverse pin or rivet 24 extending through the slot 22. The rivets 24 may be provided with V100 heads 25 for rigidly securing said pins to said plies, said heads being preferably covered by said coatings 18 and 19. The upper ply 14 is preferably provided with a thinned eXtension 27 a extending beyond the edge 23, the upper surface of said extension beingflush with the upper surface of said ply.

The plies 15 and 16 may likewise be formed of heat insulating or other protecting material and covered with coatings 15a and 16a of flannel and paper or the like material, respectively, similarly to the plies 13 and 14. Said plies 15 and 16 are preferably of the same thickness as said plies 13 and 14, respectively, and the inner surfaces of said plies 15 and 16 are pasted together except at the corners thereof, to form slots 27 registering with the slots 22 for the purpose hereinafter appearing. The plies 13, 14, 15 and 16 may be somewhat reduced in thickness at the meeting corners thereof to form the slots 22 and 27, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of 'the drawing. The upper ply 14 is preferably provided with a thinned extending edge 27a projecting beyond the edge 23 of the lower ply 13. The upper ply 16 may be provided with a depression adjacent the edge 28 thereof to form a ledge 29 for receiving the extension 27a of the ply 14. Thus when the sections are placed together the extension 27 overlies the ledge 29, the combined thicknesses of said eX- tension and ledge being equal to the thickness of either the ply 14 or 16, whereby there will be no break in the upper surface of the ad. It will now be understood that should liquid be spilled on top of the table pad, the ledge 29 will prevent the liquid from flowing directly to the table. The pad sections may thus be merely placed on the table top and then slidably moved into abutting relation, the extension 27 a sliding directly into overlying relation with respect to the ledge 29 to form thecomposite top.

For the purpose of interconnecting the pad sections 11 and 12 to prevent separation thereof, the section 12 is likewise provided Vwith transverse pins 30 adjacent the corners thereof and spanningthe slot-s 27. Disposed within the latter and pivoted to said pins 30 are hook members 31, preferably made of flat sheet heat insulating or the like material. The members 31 are provided with hooked ends 32 adapted tov enter the slots 22 and engage the pins 24. The hook portion 32 may be provided with inclined edges 33 whereby upon placing the pad sections together and swinging the hook members into engagement with the pins, the edges 33 may serve as cams for drawing the pads together as the hook Vmembers are forced into the engaged positions, shown in Fig. 1. Said hook members may further be provided with small notches 34 adapted to receive the pins 24 in the fully -engaging positions of said hook members,

and to preventthe hook members from accidentally releasing from the pins. Each of the hook members 31 may be provided with an opening 35 for receiving a looped cord 36 which serves as a handle for pulling the hook member out of engagement with the pins. The hook members, it will be noted, may be swung backwardly into the position shown in Fig. 5, the slots 27 being of sufficient length to receive said hook members in the retracted positions thereof so that the hook members will be entirely protected, hidden and unexposed, and only the outer end of the handle or loop 36 will project somewhat from the slot so that the same may be grasped to pull the handle outwardly. The hook members 31 serve to retain the pad members in alignment.v

It will now be understood that foi` attaching the pad sections together, it is merely necessary to place them in abutting relation and then to swing the hook members into engagement with the pins 30; Obviously since the slots 22 and 27 register, the hooks may be readily pushed into said slots 22 for connecting pad sections. For the purpose of storing the same, it is merely necessary to grasp the loops or handles 36 to pull the hook members out of engagement with the pins 30. The hook members may then be further swung rearwardly to the position shown in Fig. 5. Said hook members are thus protected and housed both when'the sections are connected and separated.

It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved. and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.

As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiments above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing, is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limitingsense.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A table pad comprising a pair of sections having meeting edges, and means for attaching said sections together comprising a member pivoted to one of said sections, said sections being provided with means for housing said attaching means including a recess for receiving said pivoted member in unattached position whereby said attaching means will be uneXposed when the sections are attached together. 2. A table pad comprising a pair of sections having meeting edges, a pair of hook members pivoted to one of said sections and disposed in the plane of said section, and a pair of pins on the other of said sections adapted to be engaged by said hook members for attaching said sections together.

3. A table pad comprising a pair of sections having meeting edges, a pair of hook members pivoted to one of said sections and disposed in the plane of said section, a pair of pins on the other of said sections adapted to be engaged by said hook members for attaching said sections together, andlooped fiexible members attached to said hook members serving as handles therefor.

4. A table pad comprising a pair of sections, each having a pair of superimposed plies of substantially similar thickness, and means for attaching said sections together, comprising a thin member made of flat sheet material extending between the plies of one of said sections and having a portion adapted to be moved between the plies of said other section.

5. A tablepad comprising a pair of sections, each section having an upper and lower ply, the upper ply of one section having a thinned extension along one edge thereof, and the upper ply of said other section being thinned at one edge thereof to form a ledge complementary to and adapted to receive said extension.

6. A table pad comprising a pair of sections, each section having an upper and lower ply, the upper ply of one section having a thinned extension along one edge thereof, and the upper ply of said other section being thinned at one edge thereof to form a ledge complementary to and adapted to receive said extension, and means for attaching said sections together.

7. A table pad comprising a pair of sections, each section having an upper and lower ply, the upper ply of one section having a thinned extension along one edge thereof, and the upper ply of said other section being thinned at one edge thereof to form a ledge complementary to and adapted to receive said extension, means for attaching said sections together, said means comprising a flat hook member having a portion extending between the plies of one of said sections and pivoted to said section, and a pin on said other section adapted to be engaged by said hook member.

8. A table top comprising a pair of complementary sections, each section comprising an upper and lower ply pasted together except at the meeting corners thereof, and forming slots in said corners, a pair of fiat hook members having portions disposed in the slots of one section and adapted to be moved into the slots of the other section, and transverse pin secured to said other section adapted to be engaged by said hook members.

9. A table top comprising a pair of complementary sections, each section having an upper and lower ply, the lower ply of one section having an edge portion contacting the edge portion of the lower ply of said other section, the upper ply of one of said sections having an edge portion extending beyond said edge of the lower ply of said first section, the upper ply of said second section being recessed inwardly of said edge of the lower ply of said second section to receive said extension.

A table pad comprising a pair of sections having meeting edges, said sections having aligned `slots at said meeting edges, a hook member having a portion extending into the slot in one of said sections, means for pivoting said hook member to said section, a transverse pin spanning the slot of said other section, the outer end of said hook member being adapted to be moved into the slot of said other section and into engagement with said pin for attaching said sections together.
