MANICURE TOOL Filed Jan.. 19, 1931 fia! e .Hra
drm/mmf' Patented Nov. 22, 1932A lHUGH n. BYNUM, or MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE MANICURE Toon Application led January 19, 1931. SerialNo. 509,611.
This invention relates to an abrasive tool primarily for filing fingernails or the like,
and is particularly directed to a device of this kind having removablebladeswhich may be used and Adiscarded forsanitary reasons or otherwise.
The objects of this invention are'to provide a device for filing iinger nails or the like, which comprises a holder or handle member and removable blades therefor; to
provide blades for such a holder; and to provide means for securing a blade toy the holder.
The means by which the foregoing and other objects are accomplished and the manner of their accomplishment will readily; be understood from the following specification on reference to the accompanying drawing,
inwhich:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the holder and the blade assembled.
Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation taken as on the line IIII of Fig. 1. Y
Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the opposite side of the device from that shown in Fig. 1.
Fig; 4 is an enlarged section line IVw-IV of Fig. 1. Y Figs. 5 and 6 are side views ofv detached blades of somewhat different shape and/or length. f
Referring now to the drawing in which the various parts are indicated by numerals; 10 is a blade arcuately curved in cross section which blade is detachably secured to a handle member of holder 11. This handle member carries a clamp which comprises an inner jaw 12, which is secured to the handle, and an outer jaw 13 which is preferably detachable. The outer surface of the inner jaw conforms to the concave surface of the blade and the inner surface of the outer j aw to the convex surface of the blade.
taken on the Rotatably secured in and' projecting in-v ward from the outer j aw 13 through a suitable aperture in the blade is a threaded pin 14 on which a thumb nut 15 is secured as secured.
jaw l3and areladapted'to pass through correspondingly located holes 'in' the blade 410 and the inner jaw .12,y thus serving to position vboth the blade and theo-uter j aw.'v The hole nintheblade for Vthereception of thev V clampingscrew is designated inFigs. 5 and 6 by the numeral 17 and thef'holes for ,theyV Y positioning pins bythe numerals 18. Y
The blade isremoved by unscrewing the pin14 and removing the jaw 13 thus yfreeing the blade vfor removal and permitting a new one'to be put in place and thereafter to be As seen in Fig. 4, the holes in the blade for the reception of the positioning pins may be slightly elongated laterally to minimize binding in the removal or replacing of the blade.
Preferably the blade is substantially rectangular in form except that the outer end 19 is rounded or curved although as shown in Fig. 5, thisV may not be done. arcuate in cross section and conforms to the curvature offthe jaws `of the holder, but this curvature may be secured by the clamping action of the jaws should it beso desired.
.The blade is a thin sheet of material which may be metal, but Vpreferably is of fiber board,
`hard paper, Celluloid or Ithe like material possessing a certain amount'of stiffness so that especially in its curved shape it is substantially rigid under the uses for which it isV designed. If of metal, a surface similar to the Vordinary nail file may be formed directly in the metal but preferably the abrasive surface is formed by coating the sheet material with an abrasive. Under usual conditions the concave side is always coated with abrasive, and preferably the convex surface and the edges of the bladev as well are .similarly p covered. Y
It is proposed to make an inexpensive blade which may be renewed as frequently as conditions warrant. Where usedv by manicurists, chiropodists or other professional operators, a new blade may be used for each individual.
In using the blade the side surfaces may be used in dressingl the ends of the nails orvotherwise as desired and the edges indressing the cuticle at the base of the nails.
The blade is Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. An abrasive tool, comprising a holder and cooperating abrasive blade therefor, said holder comprising a handle having at one end a `jaw arcuate in transverse section, a complementary arcuate j aw detached therefrom, and a clamping screw rotatably secured in said detached jaw and adapted to pass through said blade and engage With threads in the other jaw, one of said jaws having projecting pins and the other thereof having complementary holes for the reception of said pins.
and cooperating abrasiveblade therefor, said holder comprising a handle at one end, a jaw arcuate in transverse section, a complemen- Y tary jaw detached therefrom, and a clamping screw rotatably secured in said detached jaw, and adapted to pass through said blade and engage with threads inthe other jaw, Y
said detached jaw having projecting pins and the other of said jaws having complementary holes for the reception of said pins. In testimony whereof I hereunto aihx my signature.
HUGH R. BYNUM.
