NPETER5, PHOTO-LITMOGRAPMER. WASHINGTON. n O.
UNITED STATES ANDREW H. HART, OF MOUNT VERNON, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BARBERS' APRONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 188,737, dated March 27, 1877; application filed February 9, 1977.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW H. HART, of Mount Vernon, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Barbers Aprons, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
The object of my invention is to provide an apron which will fit closely around the neck,
- so as to exclude water and the snippings of hair while the hair is being washed or cut, and.
which at the same time may be easily put on, and may be worn with comfort either by children or adults. It is found that my device not only entirely excludes the snippings of hair, which the ordinary apron fails to do, but that it is more easily and quickly applied and more comfortably worn than the usual contrivances. It is also far more comfortable, and a better protection against spillings and spatterings of water and other fluids, than are the towels usually stufl'ed down and tucked around the neck.
The invention consists of an apron, A, of cloth, or of rubber or other suitable material, provided at or near one end or in the middle, as may be most convenient, with a broad piece ofthin and very elastic material, such as vulcanized india-rubber, B, secured around the edges of a corresponding openin gin the apron. In the center of the rubber B is a circular opening, D, about five inches in diameter or less. ltis found that an apron having an opening of only three inches diameter may be worn with perfect comfort by a full-grown man. The edges of the elastic material around the opening may be stengthened by cementing before vulcanization, or may be doubled over and vulcanized,
or otherwise thickened so as to present more surface to the neck, or the edges may be left sharply cut. I prefer the latter form, since it is found that the apron then fits the neck more closely.
The apron is applied by stretching the opening D and passing the rubber over the head. It then contracts around the neck and forms a perfect protection.
I claim as my invention- An apron having a part of its surface of light elastic material, and provided with a suitable opening in the elastic portion, so that it may be stretched to pass over the head of the wearer and may then contract so as to fit closely, but without too great pressure, around the neck, substantially as described.
ANDREW H. HART.
