HORACE B. FRAZIER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
HEAD-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,778, dated March 15, 1898. I
Application fil d June 18, 1897. Serial No. 641,317. (No model.)
- To aZZ whom it may concern.-
the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pneumatic Head Protectors for Athletes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to pneumatic headprotectors for athletes; and it consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.
Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken approximately on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Be it known that I, HORACE B. FRAZIER, of
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken approxi-- mately on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
My improved pneumatic head-protector is substantially in the form of a mask, which consists of the outer casing 5, constructed of suitable flexible but non-elastic material, such asleather or cloth, and designed to cover or i-nclose the principal parts of the head. This.
casing serves as a cover for the inflatable rubber sack hereinafter described. The opening 6 is formed in the front part of the mask, through which the eyes, nose, and mouth of the wearer are exposed. The upper portion 7 of the casing is in the form of a flexible band, not inflatable, and encircles the head on a line with the upper part of the forehead. The rear portions 8 and 9 of the casing are not inflatable, and their meeting edges are substantially vertical and are secured together by the lacing 10.
When the mask is in position upon the athletes head, the portions 11 and 12 of the casing cover the sides of the head, the portion 13 covers the lower part of the forehead immediately above the eyes, and the portion 14 extends across and protects the chin, said portions 11, 12, 13, and 14 being constructed to contain an inflatable sack 15 of rubber or analogous material. An ordinary valve-stem 16 is inserted through the rear end of the side portion 11 and into the corresponding portion of said inflatable sack as a means of attaching an ordinary air-pump for inflating the sack 15.
My device should be made of comparatively strong and heavy material in order to Withstand the kicks and blows to which it will be subjected in games of foot-ball, (Sac.
. The manner of placing the device upon the head and of inflating it are readily apparent and need no further description.
I claim- A mask for athletes, comprising the flexible resilient portions constructed to extend across in front of the forehead of the wearer, the portion constructed to extend across and in front of the Wearers chin, the portions con structed to cover the sides of the Wearers head, an inflatable elastic sack located With in the hereinbefore-mentioned portions of the mask, said portions terminating in flexible strips at the rear of the wearers head, and a lacing for connecting said flexible edges, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HORACE B. FRAZIER.
