This invention relates to devices forform-j ing stripes of paint or other substances.
An object of the invention is to provide a device having a portable frame equipped with a supporting slide for guiding the frame in its movements, and having means for'en-' gagement with one or more paint appllcas tors, and means for controlling the passage of the paint through the frame to the applim cators.
Another object is to improve generally the construction of the device disclosed in my prior application Serial No. 162,006, filed January 19, 1927. i
Other objects will appear from the fol-" lowing description, reference being made to the drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved device.

Fig. 15 is a side elevation of the machine equipped with a container for the material used in forming the stripes. Fig. 16 is a front elevation of the'device shown in Fig. 15. Fig. 17 is a rear elevation. As shown in Fig. 1 there are two tanks 1 mounted in a supporting ring 2 and an en-' circling ring 3. These tanks are. designed and arranged to contain paint or other substances and are preferably equipped-with. removable closures 4 provided with pressure admitting tubes 5 in order to admit pressure to force the paint or other substance from the tanks through the tubes 6 leading to the stripe-forming mechanism and ;pro.- vided with valves 7 of usual or. preferred construction for opening and closing the tubes 6.
The frame of the device comprises a body" 8 having an angular passage -9 extending therethrough and a flanged projection 10 adapted to be insertedinthe endof either of the tubes '6. The tubes Gamay comprise the passage between the angle and the .dis-

A valve 11 is mounted in the frame 8 and is to operate to open and to close the passage 9-so as to regulatethe flow of the aint or other substance to the applicator for orming the stripe. This valve has an enlarged circumferential shoulder 12 extending into a spring barrel 1'3 onthe upper end of the frame (Fig.3). I
A spring 14 encircles the valve stem within the barrel 13 having one end pressing against the enlargement 12 and the opposite end abutting against a hollow screw 15 within which-the valve stem is freely movable. This spring 14, or maybe removed to permit removal of the valve. *Alever 16 has a yoke 17 embracingthe frame 8 between its arms. The arms ofthe yoke are mounted on a pivot 18. The extremities of the yoke arms 17 have screws or pins 19 projecting under the valve stem enlargement 12 so that, by pressing the free end of the lever 16 toward the frame 8,
the valve 11 may be moved to open'position.
. By reference to Fig. 3 it will be observed that the passage 9 is angular. This passage has an angle nearitsdischarge end and the valve 11 is in axial alinement'with that part of charge *end. Thus, the valve 11 is movable axially or longitudinally. I have found this construction more satisfactory than other types of valves. P v The-lower end of the frame 8 is provided with an enlarged threadedhole into which different types. of brushes or paint applicators may be inserted; Different forms of such applicators are shown in Figs. 4 to 14,
and 5 each comprises astem 20 designed and adapted to be screwed into the enlarged threaded hole in the lower end of the frame 8 and having on its lower end a'pad .or tuft 21 through-which the paint or stripe-forming stem. In Fig. 9 is shown an applicator for.
forming two parallel stripes at the same time.
This applicator comprisesa threaded part;
26 and a pair of arms 27 each having a passage therethrough for conductingmaterial to the brushes 28. The applicator of-Fig. 11
comprises two threaded stems 29-havingj an integral connection 30. Each of-=thestems- 29 a has a passage therethrough for discharging materialto a brush 31. In Figs. 12-and- 13- is shown an applicator comprising a threaded-stem 32,- the passage through-which.
opens into a transverse notch 33 into which the material is discharged and by whichthe material isshaped into-a proper stripe. The
device-ofFig. 14 comprises a stem 34, thepassage through which discharges thematerial to an applicator pen 35.
T'heframe 8 pivotally supports an arm 36 whichextends downwardly and at its lower end carries a slide 37;. Thisslide 37 has a stem 38 extending through the arm 36 and" provided fwithaclamping nut-39 whereby the slide may beadjustedin diflerent relationships.
Al stem 40 extends from the frame 8thr0ugh the arm 36 anda spring 41 is mounted'on'thestembetween theframe Sand the arm 36.
This spring presses the arm 36 in adirectionx away-from the frame, the extent of movevment of the arm being limitedby a nut 42; By adjusting. the nut 42 along the I stem 41.
the-arm 36 may be held in any desiredrelationship in the frame.
A n arm 43 is pivoted to the lowerend of the frame 8,-and extends to theside-opposite from-the arm36'. This arm 43 has an arcuate slot 44 through which-a stem 45- extends, the *same having-a clamping nut 46 screwed thereon whereby the arm 43 maybeheld in different-adjustments. A- rod =47"is adj ustably supported'bythe-outer end of'the arm 43 and is 1 provided on its lower end withaterminal 48 ofnon-abrasive material. This rod'47' may be held in different selected adjustments in connection with the arm 43- by a set screw 49-:
Therodl47 and the slide 37"constitute supports for the frame as-the-frameais moved along the surface to be striped-so that'the applicator will pressuniformly against the surface when the machine is operated; Further the parts '47 and 37 constitute guides 6 'wherehythe-applicatorsmay be convenientlyusedto place stripes on roundedl or ogee. suitfaces. An adjustable abutment for the arm 36 comprises a screw 36 extending through the frame 8 and being capable of adjustment to limit movement of the arm 36 toward the frame 8. Further the arm 36 may be clamped between the abutment 36 and the nut 42.
The; invention as shown in Figs. 15, 16 and 17 .is provided with means for supporting the container for the paint or other material to be applied. As there shown, the portable and manually manipulative frame 50 consti tutesa support for the container 51. The lower end of the container51 comprises a discharge nozzle, 52. opening through an arm 53 of the frame. The container 51 is preferably ofcthertin-foil type, so that the material may easily be forced out through the applicator; stem 54into the brush.55. To the parts ofithe device shown in Figs. 15, 16 and 17 which correspond-to like parts shown on sheet 1 of; the. drawings, the same reference characters. are applied;
Fromtheforegoing itis apparent that this invention greatly facilitates and expedites the operation of painting stripes on various surfaces, such. as: on. the bodies of automobiles. The device isof comparatively simple constructionanchis easily. operated and-by its use the out-put of each operator is largely increased;

A striping, device, comprising a frame, atubulan paint;applicatorin connection with said frame, means for; delivering, paint through said frame toisaid applicator, a guide for saidzframe having pivotal connection. therewith forv movement toward and awayfrom said frame, and a spring yieldingly holding saidguide away fromzsaid frame and permit'tingmovement of said guide toward said 1 frame.

A striping device comprising a I frame a paint" applicator: in connection with said eanne-r frame, means for delivering paint through said frame to said applicator, a guide for said frame having pivotal connection therewith a stem extending from said frame through said guide, a spring on said stem' actuating said guide away from said frame, an element on said stem limiting extent of movement of said guide from said frame, and means limiting extent of movement of said guide toward said'frame.
