GUY ARTHOR PRICE, OF CHEHALIS, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR OF THREE-FOURTHS TO JOHN B. BROWNING ANDGUS L. THACKER, OF CHEHALIS, WASHINGTON.
PAINTING APPARATUS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUY ARTiIoR PRICE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chehalis, in the county of Lewis and State of Tashington, have invented a new and Improved Painting Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to apparatus for spreading and applying paint or other liquids, and more particularly such as are provided with means by which paint from a portable tank can be continuously fed under pressure, to brushes while the latter are being used.
An object of this invention is to provide a painting apparatus having a plurality of tanks adapted to be carried on the body of the operator, and provided with means for holding the paint brushes when they are not in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the ing manually operable paint brushes adapted to be provided with paint supplying means, flexible pipes for connecting the paint supplying means of the brushes with the portable tanks, and means for placing the paint in the tanks under pressure to effect a forced feed to the brushes.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims. 1
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section of one of the paint brushes showing the paint supplying means.
Before proceeding to a more detailed description of my invention, it should be understood that I provide a painting apparatus consisting of a tank or tanks for carrying different paints, adapted to becarried by the operator by means of shoulder straps, and manually o erable paint brushes of any common or pre erred form, connected to the tanks by means of rubber ipes, so that paint is constantly being fed from the tanks ,to the brushes. Each tank is provided with means for introducing air under pressure to Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 8, 1908.
class described, hav-' Patented July 13, 1909. Serial No. 437,306.
I further provide brush holders, adapted to be arranged on the tanks for holding the brushes in inoperative positions when they are not being used. A
The means which I employ at each brush for distributing the paint consists of a feeder, having a tube and a body member, the latter being provided with flexible nozzles, which lie adjacent to, by, the bristles. These nozzles have openings on their sides near their outer ends, so that the paint may freely escape and come in contact with the bristles. Advantage is found, in placing openings in the sides of the nozzles, in the fact, that should the openings be placed at the ends of the nozzles, the paint would be forced out directly toward the ends of the bristles. This feature of my device for distributing the paint is applicable to any ordinary paint brush and obviand encompassed ates the necessity of brushes being specially constructed.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I provide tanks 1 of any suitable form, having a fiat common back 4 adapted to be carried upon the body of the operator, and having adjustable shoulder straps 2 secured in eyes 3 integral with and extending laterally from the common back. Openings are provided in the top of the tanks for filling the latter and are fitted with screw caps 5. Arranged within the tanks and consisting of cylinders 6, pistons 7, piston stems 8 and grips 9, are pressure pumps 10. A spring valve 11 is located at the lower end of the cylinder 6. The bottoms 12 of the tanks are preferably of inverted cone shape having outlets 13 located at their apices. I further provide manually operable paint brushes 14, of any common or preferred form, and each consisting of a handle 15 and a back 16, the latter having a cut away portion 17 adapted to receive the bristles 18. A binding 19 of sheet metal, wire or the like, serves to hold the bristles in place.
The brushes are provided with feeders 20, having tubes 21 arranged within open ngs 22 in the backs of the brushes and pro ect1ng therefrom, and hollow bodies 23. These are connected to one end of the tubes, lying adjacent to the backs of the brushes and encompassed by the bristles. Each body has a plurality of extensions 24 on the side opposite to that which lies ad acent to the ends. Connecting the tubes 21 of the feed-- back of the brush, which carry nozzles 25, of any flexible material, such as rubber or the like, the nozzles having perforations 25, at their sides and preferably near their free ers with the outlets 13 at the bases of the tanks are feed pipes QG'consisting of main sections 27 and brush sections 28. Arranged between the main and brush sections are connections 29 provided with cocks 30 for regulating the flow of paint from the tanks to the brushes.
' Hooks 31 are located on the connections, for attaching the feed pipes tothe clothing of the operator, or other supports, so that they will be out of his way when he is painting. Arranged on the tanks are brush holders 32, as shown in Fig. l, for holding the brushes in an inoperative position when not in use, and consisting preferably of suitably formed cases or receptacles. Having thus described claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I 1. In a device of the class described, tanks adapted to be carried by an operator, paint brushes, feeders arranged within said paint my invention, I
brushes, each feeder consisting of a tube and connected therewith a hollow body member,
. paint brush, and feeders arranged within the brush, each feeder consisting of a tube, and a'connected hollow body member, said body member having extensions with openings therethrough, and flexible nozzles carried by the extensions, said nozzles having closed ends, and openings at the sides whereby to distribute the paint on the bristles of the brush.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 'name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
