UNITED STATES PATENT FFlC-E' WILTIIAM R. MOYES, OLE" ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO UNION TOOL CHEST COMPANY, INC., OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK REGEPTACLE WITH L'IRAY Application filed September 17, 1928. Serial No. 306,394.
The present invention relates to receptacles with trays and an object thereof is to provide a construction in which the tray sup porting means may be readily removed from the receptacle or fitted in position to support the tray. Another object of the invention is to prevent the lateral shifting of a tray in a receptacle having a constricted top portion through which the tray may be passed while held in a horizontal plane.
To these and other ends, the invention con-. sists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described; the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a vertical line. through a receptacle constructed in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on the line 22, Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary section on the same line; and
Fig. 4. is an enlarged horizontal sectional View on the line 4-4, Fig. 1.
Referring to the illustrated embodiment of the invention, 1 indicates the body of the metallic receptacle and 2 the closure having a hinged connection 3 with the rear wall of said body. The body has a constricted portion 4 at its upper edge which forms a support for a tray 5, permitting the closure 2 to be moved over the tray 5 without interference with the latter. An additional tray 6, removable at will, is supported by the side walls of the body 1 below the constricted portion.
A novel means is employed for supporting the tray 6, this means being removable at will so as not to interfere with the contents of the receptacle when the tray is removed. This means comprises, in this instance, two metal strips 7 spot welded at 8 to the inner faces of the front and back of the body 1 are spaced at 9 at intervals from said wall.
There are also provided a plurality of tray supporting devices, each, in this instance, formed from sheet metal toprovide a lower anchoring portion 10, an intermediate loop.
The tray '6 is preferably made shorter than the receptacle body so as tovide access to the; receptacle below the tray without removing the latter, and with the purpose in view of limiting the longitudinalmovement of theftray 6, the rear wall of the receptacle body'is provided with an abutment 16 which is formed in the same manner as the supporting members and has proits anchoring portion received behind the I spaced portion 17of a strap 18 which is spot welded at 19 to'the rear wall ofthe receptacle so body 1. H 7
From: the foregoing itwill be seen that there has been provided a receptacle having is readily disconnectible from the receptacle body and which when in operative positionclosed. The shoulder formed by the con-g stricted portion acts as a seat for thecover, the upwardly projecting edge of said constricted portion being tipped so as to form a slight wedge fit between the cover and the receptacle to prevent the cover from rattling.
a tray supported therein by a means which Due to the constriction ofthe top of the receptacle the tray is narrower than the opening of the constricted portion so that said tray may be inserted into the receptacle. To prevent rattling of the tray when within the receptacle, projecting supports are provided which form a slight wedge fit with the bottom edge of the tray.' 'One end of the tray abuts one end of the receptacle and the other end of the tray abuts an abutment, thus pre-' venting longitudinal play 1 a What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Y 1. The combination with a supporting wall i having a strip securedthereto and provided with a portion spaced from said wall, of a support having an anchoring :portion depending therefrom and positioned behind such spaced portion of the strip, an interme J diate tray supporting portion and a portion projecting above said tray supporting portion to engage the outer face of a tray supported on said supporting portion.
2. The combination with a supporting wall having a strip secured thereto with a portion spaced from saidwallgof'a'tray support having a dependinganchoring portion received in said space, an intermediate loop portion having its upper arm 'shorter than the lower arrn and on which a tray mayrest, and. a portion projecting above said 211111110 engage the side wall, of a tray ,and
provided with aniabutinent at its end engaging the supporting wall.
v, 3. The combinationwith a receptacle, a 1 trayadapted to be removably disposed in the I receptacle, and ineans for supporting the tray from the side walls of the receptacle below the top of the latter, of astop for preventing the longitudinal movement of the Y tray having. a portion extending substan-V tially horizontally between a side wall of the tray and the sidewall of the receptacle'a-nd engaging the latter, and an anchoring portion beyond the adjacent end of the tray secured'to the side wall of the receptacle.
