Description

'1. G. WING & J. H. THOMPSON.
FENCE-POST.
Patented Feb .13; 1877.
Unrrnn STATES PATENT Qrrron.
TURNER Gr. WING AND JOHN H. THOMPSON, OF OGDEN, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-POSTS.
V 0 Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,337, dated February 13, 1877; application filed May 27, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, TURNER Gr. WING, of
the town of Ogden. county of Boone and State of Iowa, and JOHN HEATH THOMPSON, of the same place, have invented a new Improvement in Fence-Posts of which the following is a specification Figure l is a perspective view of our improved fence-post; and Fig. 2 a side view of the same, partly in section, to show the construction.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved fence-post, which shall be so constructed as not to be liable to be drawn out of a vertical position. and which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing and then pointed out in the claim.
lhe post is made in three parts, A, B, and (l. The part A, which is designed to serve as a brace, is made in the form of a square plate, with a downwardly-projecting flange around its edge. The middle parts of the sides of the flange of the plate Aare recessed, leaving its angular or corner parts projecting, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Through the center of the brace-piece A is formed a hole, to receive the base or socketpiece B, which is made long, of uniform breadth in one direction, and tapering to an edge in the other direction. The upper end of the base B is enlarged, and has a socket formed in it, to receive the lower end of the post 0. The enlarged upper end of the base B fits into the hole in the brace-piece A, and has a flange, 12, formed around it, to rest upon the top of the said brace-piece A, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The parts A B of the post are made of cast iron, and the part 0, to which the fence is attached, is made of wrought iron.
In setting the post, the prongs of the flanged portion of the brace-piece A are driven into the ground, until the top plate rests upon the surface of the ground; the base or socketpiece B, is then driven into the ground through the hole in the center of the brace-piece A, and the post G is placed in its socket.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with a fence-post, the socketed drive-base B, provided with flange b and the perforated brace-piece A with its descending prongs, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
TURNER G. WING. JOHN H. THOMPSON. Witnesses:
