Description

G.' W. RENEAU.
POST BRACE.
APPLICATION HLEn AUG.I3| 1915.
1,237,097. Patented Aug. 14, 1917.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE POST-BBACE.
Application filed August 13, 1915.
2 b all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE XVR NEAU,
a cltizen of the United States, residing at De View, in the county of Woodruif and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post-Braces; and I dodeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
y invention relates to braces for fence and other posts, and has for its object to provide a brace simple in construction and efficient in use, which can be readily applied and when necessary removed from one post and applied to another, and which by adustnient of its partsmakes it possible to draw and hold the post perpendicular.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear the invention consists in the features hereinafter particularly described and then sought to be elearly defined by the claims, reference being had to the accompan drawing forming a part hereof, an which'- Figure 1 is a side view of the fence and post with the brace applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 a detail view of the lower part of the brace with the loop or eye at the end of the tie-rod in section;
Fig. 4 is a perspective of a. portion. of a post and brace rod and bearing-plate for the upper end of the bar;
dig. 5 a perspective of the bearing-plate; an i Fig. 6 a section through the same.
In the drawing the numeral 1 designates a post which may be of or other suitable'material, and of any desired shape in cross section. The numeral 2 designates a diagonally disposed brace bar which may be, solid but preferably is tubular, th
or shoulder 3 t and is formed with aknob near its lower end, the same preferably being cast with or otherwise ormed as an integral part of the bar. The numeral 4 designates a tie-rod of suitable metal and formed at one end with an e e or loop 5 that encircles or grasps the diagonal brace bar near ts lo er end beneath the knob or shoulder 8 Specification of Letters Patent.

and abutting against the shoulder which prevents the tie-rod from slipping up on the diagonal bar when the tie-rod is tightened for drawing the post and tyingit in a perpendicular position. It will be observed that the lateral tie-rod and the diagonal. brace constitute a brace one to the other at the point where the diagonal brace passes through the eye or loop of the tie-rod as one bears against the other at such point and thus each tends to resist side thrust of the other at such point, as well as one constituting to some extent a support for the other. This aifords additional strength and rigid ity to the structure. One end of the tie-rod passes through the post and is threaded to nut '7 by which the parts of the brace are drawn tent. The lower end of the diagonal bar is set into a concrete base 8 and its upper end bears against the face of the post and sets into a recess formed either in the post as indicated in Fig. 1, or in a bearing plate 9 attached to the post as indicated in Fig. 4. If fitted in a recess formed in the face of the post, a suitable staple 10 may be employed to secure the end of the bar in the post; or if the bearing plate 9 is used the end of the bar will fit in the recess 12 of the plate, and the tothe post by studs or prongs'13. In eithercase the end of the bar will be prevented from slipping side wise; and when the nut on the tie-rod is tightened the diagOnaLbar and post are held rigidly and securely. together and. the post The construction and arrangement of parts are such that the possibility of the parts slipping 01'- becoming loose is practically prevented and a strong and rigid brace for a post, whether for fencing or other purposes, which the post may be rigidly braced in a perpendicular is provided for. the advantages of the construction, and have illustrated and described the preferred details of the several parts but changes can be made therein and essen al features of the invention not departed ilOIIl.
Having described my invention and set forth its merits what I claim is: 1. The post-brace comprising the diagonally extending brace-bar, and a laterally extending rigid tie-rod rigidly connected at one end to the post to be braced and at the opposite end formed with a rigid eye through which the diagonal brace passes and which engages said brace so as to afford a stiff. rigid connection between the brace and rigid tie-rod and support for the brace-rod. V
I have illustrated and described some of tea-1,001
2. The post-brace comprising the diago nally extending brace-bar provided near its lower end with a fixed abutment, and a laterally extending rigid tie-rod rigidly connected at one end to the post to be braced and at the opposite end formed with a rigid eye through which the diagonal brace passes, the fixed abutment of the brace and the rigid eye of the tie-rod interlocking with each other and afi'ordinga rigid support for the brace at the end of the tie-rod.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
