UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
RICHARD W. HATHAWAY, OF FAIRHAVEN, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROWLOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187.227, dated February 13, 1877; application filed January 19, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD W. HATHA- WAY, of Fairhaven, in the county of Bristol, State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rowlocks, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The objects of myinvention are to strengthen the shaft of the rowlock, where it unites with the arms, by enlarging it, without enlarging that part of the cylindrical socket which is inserted in the gunwale of the boat; and also to strengthen the cylindrical socket by a shoulder on the upper end of it, and by which shoulder prevent the cylindrical socket from being inserted too far into the gunwale; and to strengthen the arms of the rowlock where they unite with the shaft.
My invention consists in a concave socket or cup around the upper end of the shaft of the rowlock, (being a part of the arms and shaft,) and in a rib or shoulder on the upper end of the cylindrical socket.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will now more fully describe it.
Figure 1 is a View of a rowlock with my invention applied to it. Fig. 2 is a vertical view of the rib on the upper end of the cylindrical socket, which is secured in the gunwale of the boat.
A is an inverted socket formed around the shaft where the arms unite with it. B is a rib formed on the upper end of the cylindrical socket, and fitsinto the inverted socket; C C, thethread or screw upon the socket, which secures the wooden rowlock firmly to the gun- Wale.
The simplicity of this device is such that any one, not a mechanic. who can bore a hole, can insert the socket into the gunwale, without the aid of any other tools.
I claim- Concave socket A, rib B, and thread or screw upon the socket C 0,2111 constructed and operating as set forth, for the purposes specified.
RICHARD W. HATHAWAY.
