July 19, 1932. R P. E. STARR COMBINATION SHOE HORN AND CASE Filed Feb. 20, 1932 3mm Sia n" Patented July 19, 21932 ENT ROBERT P. ELLIS STARR, OF CON CORDIA,
COMBINATION SHOE HORN AND CASE Application filed February 20,1932. Serial No. 594,303.
This invention relates to a combined shoe horn and carrying case.
An object of this invention is to provide a novel combination in the form of a shoe horn and carrying case wherein the shoe horn can be conveniently carried with any type of case such as a bill fold, check book holder or the like. 7
Another object of this invention is to provide a case of this kind wherein the shoe horn may be used without opening of the case, the
case acting as a handle for manipulation of the shoe horn during the use thereof.
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described in and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying, drawing, wherein H Figure 1 is a detail top plan view of a device constructed according-to the preferred" embodiment of this invention, and showing in dotted line the device in closedposition;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1. Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter C. designates generally a case in the form of a leather or flexible case which is adapted to receive articles of various types,v
the case including a body 10 and a flap or closure 11. The case G is providedwith one member 12 of a snap fastener and the flap 11 has a complementary fastening member 13 adapted to engage the fasteningmember 12 so as to hold the flap 11 in closed position on the open end of the case 0.
The flap 11 comprises a flexible outer covering 14, a lining 15 and a stiffening member I tions being restricted only by the scope of the 16 which is interposed between the lining 15' and the outer covering 14. 'This stiflening element 16 may be constructed of'cardboard or other material of a relatively stiff con:
struction which has a degree of flexibility,
and preferably the inner end portion of the stiffening member 16 is reduced'so that the.
outer portion of the flap 11 outwardly of the fastener 13 may be bent or flexed without un fastening "the fastener 13 from the ment 12. The outer end of theflap 11 is provided with a reduced extension 17 and the inner end of a shoe horn 18 is secured as by lacing 19 to this reduced extension 17 of the flap 11. By securing the shoe horn 18 to the flap 11 by the lacing 19, the horn 18 may be constructed ele- 1 of any desired material such as metahcom position material or the like, which is profs erably of non-flexible construction and is curved transversely as is conventional with shoe horns. I a
The body 10 is provided with a pocket 20 to receive the shoe horn 18 when in inopera- V tiVe position, this pocket being formed by sewing or otherwise securing an outer wall 21 to the covering of-the body 10 withone end of the wall 21 left open to receive the shoe horn 18.
left in closed position with the snap fasteners 12 and 13 engaged one with another, and the shoe horn 18-may be Withdrawn from the pocket 20 by flexing the flap 11 at a point closely adjacent the snap fastenerl3. When the shoe horn 18 is removed from the pocket 20, the horn may be used with the case serving as a flexible handle and as the snap fasteners 12' and 13 may be left engaged with each other, none of the articles positioned in the case C will drop out. I
It is, of course, understood that "various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the V above specifically described embodiment of this invention'without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifica- In the use of this device, the flap 11 may be I 3. The combination of a case ineiuding a I flexible flap, fastening means carried by the flap and the case to secure the flap to the case, n a shoe horn, a reduced extension formed with r the flap, means for securing the horn to the flap, and a pocket carried by the case to receive the henn andi hold thQhOI'IIgiIl: inoperative pd'siti'bn;
In testimony whereof I hereuntOefHXLmy signature. V v
